Eli Manning's wife, Abby, was in the building when the New York Giants played the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. But Abby rarely would travel to Philadelphia for games in the past, apparently due to the behavior of Eagles fans in the crowd.

Man Plants Endless Lanes Of Sunflowers To Honor Beloved Late Wife, Benefit Cancer Patients

This man’s love for his late wife has only blossomed.

Don Jaquish‘s beloved wife, Babette, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, back in 2006, according to ABC News. Sadly, she died late last year.

Babette was a huge fan of sunflowers, so Don honored her in the most fitting way possible — by planting a giant stretch of  sunflowers for her. They bloomed this month and Don plans to harvest and sell the seeds to help benefit cancer patients as part of his organization Babbette’s Seeds of Hope, ABC News reported.

“She got to be known as the sunflower lady of the community,” Don told ABC News of his wife. “So after she passed away, I thought it would be a tribute to her to plant 4.5 miles of sunflowers on each side of Highway 85.”

The “sunflower strip” covers the land of five different farms, KARE 11 reported. Don, who planted the flowers over a span of a week, was able to rent land from his neighbors at a reasonable price to complete the project.

He told ABC News that it was Babbette who originally came up with the idea of selling sunflower seeds and donating a portion of the proceeds to cancer research. About a month after his wife’s death, Don formed Babbette’s Seeds of Hope. Through the group, he’ll sell the seeds in bags, which will soon be available for purchase, with Babbette’s face on them along with her story printed on them. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to hospitals, research and patient advocacy, according to the company’s website.

It’s something the loving husband says would’ve made his wife proud.

“I think she would be smiling,” Don told ABC News. “We had an amazing response. We’ve had people all over the world send emails.”

While the sunflowers took a lot of time and effort to plant, Don says it was all worth it — especially for a woman whose spirit matched the beauty of the flowers.

“They fit her personality,” the widower told KARE11. “She’d walk into a room and her smile would light up a whole room.”

Months after her Babbette’s death, Don found a note from his wife stuck in a folder. In light of the sunflowers and their seeds, her words certainly ring true.

“You move on and live each day,” Babbette wrote, according to KARE11. “Feel me in the morning air, and when you wake up and make your coffee. I will be there always.”

‘My Wife Is Fat’

Reader Wife Is Fat writes:

I felt compelled to send you a message after reading the Husband is Overweight entry because my situation is a bit reversed.  I’m in the army and my wife is the overweight one (200lbs and 5’4″) and she knows it.  She gained weight after she was pregnant with our daughter (she had hyperemesis gravidarum which messed her diet up) so I’ve tried to be patient.  After about a year and a half she has finally started to make half-hearted attempts because she wants to lose weight before having another child, in case she has another complicated pregnancy.  Half hearted attempts include paleo or various other diets for a month at a time without exercise.  Finally started some 21 Day Fitness routine where she exercises and follows a portioning diet but that lasted about a week and a half and she just made brownies the other day.  If I complain or refuse to eat them, she says, “Well, I’ll just eat all of them and just get fatter.”

On top of all this she has several tools and people at her disposal but I think she is too self conscious to get help.  I’m an endurance athlete by the nature of my job,  I’m familiar with nutrition and training. We have a gym in our garage even.  My suggestions fall on deaf ears because “women’s bodies are different”  Her friend across the street is a Crossfit instructor with a child of similar age and she just says “Crossfit doesn’t help fat people” …Sure.  I found a group similar to Stroller Strides at the park I run at, had some initial interest and I didn’t think she could really make an excuse for that one since we already have  a Bob.  She wants a “fat friend” to do it with her and don’t expect it to happen.

Ultimately, I have a hard time with this because I’m extremely self driven (also according to some of your articles I have narcissistic traits too), wake up early in order to workout before work.  I offer to watch our daughter when I get home but usually my wife is tired by that time or doesn’t really want to work out.  She refuses to put our daughter in any sort of day care (she’s 18 months old).  I will say she is a nurse and works nights once a week so I understand she is tired after working but that should be one or two days.  She recently got an appointment scheduled to remove her mirena because she thinks that is the source of her weight gain among other side effects, this is also when she stopped following the 21 day plan.

I’ve mentioned that I would like her to lose weight a couple times ( as subtly as I could and mostly because I want our family to be more active as our daughter gets older) but that gets a retort of “You’re a real asshole.”  I feel like there isn’t a nice way for men to put it.  I’ve thought about getting separated (for this and some conflicting personality issues) but its not quite to the point of “I’ve had enough” and I’m afraid of my daughter being raised seeing me as a villain if we did separate and it lead to a divorce.

scale-403585_640

Dear WIF,

I’m sorry you’re so upset.  You can read this post, in which I give advice to another man whose wife is overweight.  Basically I say that if he stops telling her to lose weight, she might decide to on her own, but if it’s a dealbreaker, then leave. I give the same advice to you. What you should not do is remain in a relationship where your daughter continually picks up on the idea that you’re dissatisfied with her mother’s appearance and that you consider her mother to be lazy and unmotivated in addition to physically unattractive.  So, either get out, or get therapy so that you can make peace with your fat wife.

If you have narcissistic traits, it’s good that you can admit it, and please realize that this means that you’re even more sensitive to how others perceive your wife.  You’re a guy with a fat wife, and that is not comfortable for you.  It would be enlightening to explore the origins of your current dissatisfaction and your marital dynamic in your childhood.  Was one of your parents passive aggressive (like both you and your wife seem to be)?  Was one depressive and unmotivated and the other condescending and detached?  (That would parallel your wife and you.)  Was one a caretaker and the other a narcissist?  Was one the guy who said, “No biggie, 24 hour shifts don’t make you exhausted for more than one day afterward and we should put our year and a half old into daycare despite this child being the emotional lifeline for you since I provide you with limited emotional support and implicit criticism?” Just asking.

Here’s some good news for your wife though, since I doubt you think she’s smarter than you about much: she’s right about the exercise.  Exercise doesn’t make women lose weight as easily as it does for men, because women’s bodies are different.  In fact, exercise makes people hungrier and doesn’t work for weight loss overall, according to research.  Of course it has loads of other awesome benefits and can make your body look more toned, and intense exercise (like your wife is unlikely to start with) may hasten weight loss, but in terms of calories in, calories out, I never lose weight from exercise because a 30 minute run burns 250 calories (I’m slow) and then I’m hungrier for two apples later.  Yup, two apples negates a run.  O cruel world. This is why you see so many runners who aren’t rail thin, and are even overweight.

Your wife needs to eat less and differently to lose weight, and this can be supplemented by exercise for all sorts of good reasons.  But we don’t even know if she genuinely wants to lose weight; it’s hard to access internal motivation when you’re being subtlely (or unsubtlely) commanded to do something or risk your husband’s loss of love. (Read this about how Type A, narcissistic guys criticize their stay at home wives. because I think a similar dynamic is at play even though she works.) Food, and probably caring for your baby, seems to be her source of emotional support.  If she wants to examine this in counseling, great, but that counseling is also going to focus on your “subtle” comments that undermine her self-esteem and may end with her leaving you, then losing weight and attracting a new guy that is nicer to her.

I also suggest couples counseling, because you both need it before you have an affair or model a crappy marriage for your kid.  By the way, if she wants another baby, you better watch out if you have one, because that will really stress your marriage to the breaking point if you haven’t worked on it by then. I also think that she might in fact want another baby in part because maybe then you’ll get off her case about her weight, and also it might make it easier for her to say that she wants to stop working nights, since having two kids is harder than one.  Maybe this isn’t the case but I’ve seen a lot of couples in this situation.

If you wanted concrete communication advice, it would be to say something like:

“Hey, I’m sorry I’ve been acting like an asshole about you being overweight.  Upon introspection, I believe that in addition to my own dislike of fat, on myself and others, I also feel we are getting into the same dynamic as my parents, where she sat around and watched TV and he would shake his head [or whatever their dynamic was; I’m guessing it wasn’t perfect].  I also want to apologize for talking about Crossfit all the time, which is difficult and intense for even super fit people. In fact, if I’m honest with myself and you, it’s not the same issue for me that you’re inactive as it is that you’re overweight.  If we both tried to limit our sugar intake together, this would be a good first step that would make me happier.  Also, I think we should go to couples counseling because our communication needs work and we barely have sex anymore [I’m just guessing that part].”  If you love her and can say that, add it in.

To be honest, your wife probably isn’t going to lose weight till your child(ren) are older.  She has no motivation and you may be more difficult to deal with than you realize (come on, eat her homemade brownie, or at least half of it).  I am a big Stroller Strides proponent, but if my husband told me to do Stroller Strides when my first baby was 18 months old, I would have told him to stride out of the house while I cried and ate ice cream.  I didn’t exercise from the birth of my first child till the birth of my third three and a half years later.  People either need intrinsic motivation to exercise.  Intrinsic is stuff like “I want to be healthy” or “I want my awesome loving husband to think I’m hot.”  It is usually not “I want to appease my narcissistic husband although I am certain that no amount of weight that I could reasonably lose would be enough to make him prefer me to a Crossfit loving 25 year old.”

Hopefully you can stay and be happy; if not, make your decision and allow your wife to live her life free of you and criticism, and you can get one of those Crossfit women and start enjoying your life (till she pops out a baby and exchanges the kettlebell for a Moby wrap).  Good luck and keep me posted.  Till we meet again, I remain The Blogapist Who Says Your Own Counseling Could Really Help Shed Light On Many Aspects Of Your Life.

Robert Duvall Shares What It Was Like to Work With His Wife Luciana In ‘Wild Horses’

Robert Duvall’s latest film is all in the family. In an interview with “The HuffPost Show” on Friday, Duvall described working with his wife Luciana Duvall in “Wild Horses,” in theaters and on demand now, and joked that she had a leg up on the competition for her role.

“To get it straight, she sleeps with the director, so that’s why she got the part,” Duvall laughed.

Luciana played along and agreed that their relationship was a factor in the casting process.

“That’s the only reason I took the part, really. [He’s the] only director I want to sleep with,” she joked.

Luciana then took a more serious tone and weighed in on her husband’s directing style. While some directors try to “force” actors to connect,” Robert takes a more hands off approach, she told host Roy Sekoff.

“Bob is very good with allowing you to be in touch with yourself. Like there were some scenes where sometimes you don’t connect. Actors, sometimes, they come on the set and they don’t connect with the scene,” she said. “Sometimes directors want them to connect with the scene, with something that is not there, so they force them to do something that is not available right now. And Bob, he said, ‘It’s just fine.'”

Bobby Flay Cheated With January Jones, Claims Estranged Wife In Court Docs

Bobby Flay and Stephanie March’s divorce is not what you’d call amicable.

The couple split in early April after 10 years of marriage and March is challenging the prenup under which Flay is required to pay the actress $ 5,000 a month.

In Touch reports that March is challenging the prenup on the grounds that Flay allegedly cheated on her with three women, including actress January Jones.

A source familiar with the case told the magazine that the former “Law & Order: SVU” actress is claiming in court papers that the 50-year-old celebrity chef “committed adultery” with Jones several times in the in early 2010. The magazine also reports that March has accused Flay of cheating with a food stylist and his assistant.

Page Six previously reported that it’s believed the couple’s prenup had no infidelity clause, and if true, March’s claims likely would not help her cause. However, TMZ reported that the actress also filed documents claiming that it’s her “amazing palate” that is responsible for his success.

Reps for Flay and Jones have yet to respond to requests for comment.

Photographer Dwayne Schmidt captured the moment and shared it on his business’s Facebook on Saturday, calling it “one of the best things I have ever [gotten] to see, much less photograph.” At the time of publication, the post had amassed more than 47,000 likes and counting.

The photo shows the couple holding hands and closing their eyes as to not catch a glimpse of each other before the ceremony. The groom is saying a prayer aloud, while his bride-to-be stands around the corner.

“It broke me down to know that we felt the same way about God,” the bride told ABC News. “It just made me happy.”

The soon-to-be-newlyweds weren’t the only ones who were overcome with intense emotions.

“The whole room was full of emotion,” Schmidt said. “I tried not to cry and focus on what I was doing.”

Photos Capture Tender Moment When Man Surprises His Wife In Hospital On Their 57th Anniversary

The sweet story of an elderly man’s tuxedoed surprise for his wife on their 57th anniversary has spread like wildfire on the Interwebs this week as netizens everywhere celebrated the Georgia couple’s enduring love.

James “Jim” Russell told ABC News that he and his wife Elinor don’t typically celebrate their wedding anniversaries in a big way, but this year, his family encouraged him to do something extra special.

So on May 20, Russell — who says he’s known Elinor “since she was in pigtails” — donned a tuxedo and, bearing an armful of flowers and chocolates, surprised his beloved in her hospital room. Elinor has reportedly been hospitalized for the past month.

The couple shared a meal in her room, then watched her favorite TV shows. Elinor told ABC News that the duo “had a wonderful time.”

“Being in a hospital bed, you get bored so when they came in, it made me smile like the younger days when we were dancing,” she said.

The couple’s granddaughter, Reid Russell, shared photographs of the special occasion on Twitter this week. Her tweet promptly went viral, racking up more than 25,000 retweets.

On Thursday, Russell wrote that she was “blessed” to have her grandparents in her life.

24 Promises Every Man Should Make To His Future Wife

By Tom Miller for YourTango

I’ll be 36 by the time this gets published and I’m still not married. According to my mom, I should probably count on staying that way for a while because “all the good ones are taken.”

Little does she know that, sooner or later, I’ll likely marry someone younger or, gawd fahbid, some “poor” divorcee.

I’m not sure if I’m one of the “good ones” or not, but what I am sure about is that I want to have shared values with my future wife — and in return, I’ll promise her the world.

Or more realistically, I will commit to these 24 things:

I will never leave an empty toilet paper roll in the bathroom (or hang a fresh roll upside down like a monster).

  1. I will try to solve your problems instead of just listening and saying, “that sucks.”
  2. I will handle or (delegate handling) any pest problems.
  3. I will only say sh*tty things about your family when they do sh*tty things to you.
  4. I won’t steal your thunder and will always be your biggest cheerleader.
  5. I will eat anything you cook… unless it’s genuinely gross because life is just too short.
  6. I will respond incredibly well to the words “please” and “thank you.”
  7. I won’t get embarrassingly drunk at any event that’s important to you.
  8. I will surprise you with my depth of knowledge about completely unimportant topics regularly.
  9. I will bring home flowers for no reason, and no, I’m not feeling guilty about anything.
  10. I will not share all my passwords with you, nor will I ask for yours.
  11. I will sing the wrong words to songs… loudly.
  12. I will continue to despise reality TV, unless I marry a reality TV star.
  13. I will take athletic endeavors too seriously.
  14. I will make jokes at inappropriate times; you will generally laugh.
  15. I will refer to myself as a hero, not always ironically.
  16. I will lavish you with compliments, mostly sincerely.
  17. I will consult with you for most purchases over1,000 — adjusted for inflation to 2015 currency values — unless it’s a gift for you, or we’re just NASTY rich.
  18. I will cuddle you until I absolutely just need to sleep.
  19. I will not shoplift. This is probably not an issue, but I’m an 8th Commandment guy.
  20. I will not let disagreements with you color my opinion of you as a person.
  21. I will not go vegan.
  22. I will not start a band.
  23. I will help any of your friends move (provided they’re not complete jerks).
  24. I will not (completely) let myself go.

I know, you don’t have to say it: I’ll be a hero husband and all of your friends will be hella-jealous of how much I spoil you.

Here Are Gifs Of All The Times Alicia And Kalinda Drank Together On ‘The Good Wife’

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the first six seasons of “The Good Wife,” up to and including the season 6 finale.

When the sixth season of “The Good Wife” came to a close on May 10, it marked the end of one of TV’s most powerful, complicated relationships: Kalicia. Up until this point of the marvelous show, attorney Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) were alternately the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. There were runs of episodes where they almost always shown together, and much longer runs where they were never in the same room. Gossip around Hollywood chalks the latter up to a vicious but completely mysterious fight between Margulies and Panjabi, which only makes the on-screen relationship between the two characters more fascinating.

Amidst all the turmoil, there was one thing you could count on with these two: They would drink. They loved drinking, a trait they share with several other powerful female protagonists on TV dramas.

So to commemorate their glorious friendship, The Huffington Post combed through six seasons of “The Good Wife” to find all the scenes where Kalicia drank together. Here they are.

2015-05-18-1431987861-8079182-Season1Episode1AliciaDrinking.gif

The ritual began in the show’s pilot, meaning it predates even the appearance of such staple characters of the show as Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) and David Lee (Zach Grenier). That’s how integral it is to the show! In this first episode, Alicia and Kalinda work together to crack a difficult murder case involving a faked carjacking. After Alicia presents their killer evidence, and the jury goes out to deliberate, Kalinda tells her that it’s a Stern Lockhart & Gardner tradition for lawyers to take tequila shots after their first jury trial.

2015-05-18-1431987898-1029929-Season1Episode1KalindaDrinking.gif

After Alicia takes her shot, Kalinda reveals that this was a trick: no such tradition exists. For a moment, it seems like Kalinda won’t drink her tequila. But then, of course, she does. Alicia smiles.

2015-05-18-1431987934-7707923-Season1Episode11KalindaDrinking.gif

The next nine episodes feature lots of interactions between Alicia and Kalinda, but none of them involve alcohol, sadly. They don’t drink together again until the 11th episode. Even then, it’s not in a bar, but in a room in their office: they drink beer and eat kettle corn while watching TV news related to the two cases of the week.

2015-05-18-1431988039-8472490-Season1Episode14KalindaDrinking.gif

In episode 14, though, Alicia and Kalinda hit the bar again, because they have some personal matters to discuss. (Glenn Childs has asked Kalinda to testify against Alicia’s husband Peter.) This time, Kalinda orders a dark beer…

2015-05-18-1431988092-6262329-Season1Episode14AliciaDrinking.gif

…while Alicia drinks what looks like tequila again. But she sips it instead of shooting it.

2015-05-18-1431988156-9689967-Season1Episode21AliciaDrinking.gif

This drinking session apparently goes well, because they go to another bar in episode 21. Alicia drinks what appears to be a martini with olives.

2015-05-18-1431988182-9482663-Season1Episode21KalindaDrinking.gif

Kalinda gets another dark beer.

2015-05-18-1431988228-9069830-Season1Episode22BothDrinking.gif

The very next episode, the second-to-last of season 1, opens with Alicia and Cary finding out that Alicia got the one full-time position they had been competing for all season. Kalinda waits for Alicia down the hall and, knowing that Alicia will likely feel crummy for beating out Cary, insists that they go to get drinks. They start by ordering two tequila shots in a row.

2015-05-18-1431988316-6076505-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They keep drinking, as is evident from the plethora of glasses that accumulate on the bar top.

2015-05-18-1431988346-6286008-Season1Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

All that tequila gets them pretty wasted. A cute, younger guy hits on them, sending them into a giggle fit. He buys them yet another round of drinks.

2015-05-18-1431988373-3979951-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinkingAgain.gif

These extra drinks send them into the truthbomb-dropping stage of drunkenness, prompting Alicia to ask Kalinda whether she’s a lesbian.

Kalinda refuses to answer, much to Alicia’s chagrin. But then a call to Alicia’s cell phone saves her. Will tells Alicia she has to go see a client, so she composes herself and goes to Colin Sweeney’s house, where she finds him handcuffed to a dead female body. Alicia maintains admirable composure, considering her inebriation. Close call!

2015-05-18-1431988410-1505446-Season2Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

Alicia and Kalinda next drink together in the sixth episode of season two, at an office party to celebrate a huge class action settlement. While drinking champagne, Alicia notes that Kalinda doesn’t look as happy as everyone else at the firm.

2015-05-18-1431988573-2916275-Season2Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Just three episodes later, in “Nine Hours,” one of the best episodes of the entire series, Alicia and Kalinda work on a stressful death row case from Alicia’s apartment. At a particularly trying moment, Alicia grabs them two beers out of the fridge.

2015-05-18-1431988636-9835993-Season2Episode9BothDrinking.gif

They drink them on Alicia’s bed. Slash fic alert!

2015-05-18-1431989198-858921-Season2Episode17BothDrinking.gif

They actually only visit a bar one time in the second season, in the 17th episode. They return to their beloved tequila shots.

A couple episodes later, Alicia discovers that Kalinda had slept with Peter, one time, many years ago, before they were friends. She’s completely furious. The revelation creates a rift between her and Peter — and, more importantly, between her and Kalinda. Throughout most of season 3, they only speak when work requires them to. Some have speculated that the real-life tiff between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi first emerged around this time, though Margulies attributed the break to natural developments in the plot.

2015-05-18-1431989242-7090087-Season3Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

In any case, they finally drink together again in the final episode of season 3. Though it begins as a kind of “Parent Trap” situation — Cary invited them both to the same bar — they actually manage to have a bit of fun.

2015-05-18-1431989277-8133208-Season3Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They even take tequila shots together!

2015-05-18-1431989347-2365038-Season4Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

This bar visit sets off something of a renaissance in their friendship. They visit bars three times in the first half of season 4. They sip red wine and whiskey in episode 6.

2015-05-18-1431989381-2828868-Season4Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Cary joins them for some cocktails of an indeterminate nature in episode 9.

2015-05-18-1431989741-77136-Season4Episode10AliciaDrinking.gif

And then in episode 10, they go back to tequila shots. Kalinda is uncharacteristically late to the drinks in this episode, which worries Alicia.

2015-05-18-1431989768-8150781-Season4Episode10KalindaDrinking.gif

When she shows up, a few minutes after Alicia takes her first shot, she reveals that the drama surrounding her relationship with her erratic husband is over. What exactly happened to him is unclear, though when Kalinda says there’s no chance of his ever returning, it’s hard not to suspect that she killed him. He was a jerk, though, so this is an occasion for tequila.

2015-05-18-1431989799-8829444-Season4Episode11KalindaBringsWine.gif

One of the sweetest of their drinks sessions comes in the next episode, when Alicia is staying at a remote hotel while waiting to be allowed to depose a key witness in a case. Kalinda brings her fresh clothes — and a bottle of red wine.

2015-05-18-1431989853-9096019-Season4Episode11NeitherDrinking.gif

They lie in side-by-side beds glumly, chatting about this and that while drinking glasses of red wine. It’s cute. It seems like maybe they’re on track to be best friends again.

But then — nothing. In a big way.

Alicia and Kalinda see each other briefly in the next episode, but after that, don’t share a scene for more than two seasons after this hotel tryst. There’s no on-screen blowout to explain their bizarre separation, so this is when many (starting with Buzzfeed) speculated that Panjabi and Margulies got in some terrible fight. No one in the press has ever managed to figure out what transpired; it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.

Whatever happened, though — and something must have happened — it kept Alicia and Kalinda apart right up until the very end of season 6.

2015-05-19-1432057374-1243209-Season6Episode21TugOfWar.gif

They sort of reunite in the season’s penultimate episode, after Kalinda has fled town to avoid being killed by Lemond Bishop, when Alicia thinks back to two times they’d met before. But the flashback scenes are either filmed in such a way that the two actresses may never have even been in the same room, or are repurposed footage from season 1. Fun fact, though: although this same tug-of-war over Alicia’s phone was shown in the drunken bar night in Season 1, Episode 22, the exact moment above is shot from two different camera angles in the two episodes.

2015-05-18-1431992398-6464942-Season6Episode22KalindaOrdering.gif

In the season 6 finale, they finally reunite for real. Kalinda surprises Alicia at a bar just before she leaves town for good. She orders two tequila shots for old time’s sake.

2015-05-18-1431992366-6225483-Season6Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

Then, though, something curious happens: Most of the shots in the scene show only one of the two actresses clearly. For that reason, many people started to speculate that they hadn’t actually filmed most of it together.

2015-05-18-1431992454-480308-Season6Episode22BothDrinking.gif

On May 15, TVLine reported, based on some anonymous inside intel, that the scene had indeed been faked. The shots that show only one face clearly were filmed with body doubles filling in for the obscured actor, while Panjabi and Margulies filmed the shots that include both characters separately, and then the footage was merged together in post-production.

2015-05-18-1431992526-68236-Season6Episode22Goodbye.gif

The fact that Panjabi and Margulies couldn’t overcome their rumored enmity even for a day of filming made the parting — likely the last time these two characters ever see each other, since Kalinda is now officially on the lam — even sadder. Kalicia is, or, was, a friendship for the ages. These drinking buddies will live in our hearts and livers forever. And we look forward to revisiting the early season heyday of their relationship many times to come.

Thanks to David Letterman, I Have a Wife, Job and Best Friend

2015-05-09-1431194449-242350-Dave1.png

Five words. Just five words: Revolutionary. Hilarious. Mischievous. Subversive. Anarchical.

At age 14, I would have had no idea what four of those words meant, but looking back, that is surely why David Letterman’s short lived 1980 morning show enthralled me. It’s why I have been watching Late Night and Late Show for what? More than 30 years.

Also, at age 14, there’s no way I could have known that the guy giving a canned ham to a monkey washing a cat would be 51 percent responsible for my happy marriage, my career in TV comedy and my cherished friends. Yes. 51 percent. Trust me. I did the math.

I became a Page (think Kenneth from “30 Rock”) at NBC in Rockefeller Center in 1989 for one reason: to get as close as I could to the epicenter of revolutionary mischievous hilarity.

  • I was mesmerized by the absurdity: tossing things off a tall building, just to see them explode.
  • I was mesmerized by the insanity: putting a camera on a monkey’s back just to see the world from a different perspective.
  • I was mesmerized by the anarchy: the total disregard for his employer, GE’s authority. The “GE Handshake” makes me laugh still today.
  • I was mesmerized by the absurd indulgence: Getting Henry Mancini to write the musical introduction to “Viewer Mail.”

As part of my Page duties, during the day, I’d give tours of empty Studio 6A where Late Night was taped. I also sat in Dave’s chair, despite being admonished by my page bosses not to. I threw pencils through the “glass” behind the desk. I sat on the desk, too. In the afternoon, I wandered the halls outside Studio 6A just to get a glimpse of Dave as he headed to and from rehearsal. At the time, he carried a football and obsessively tossed it to himself and others. On a few occasions, I even manned the Studio 6A desk — situated in the hall outside the 6A studio — and handed Dave his dressing room key. On many evenings during my 18 months as a Page at NBC, I also sat the audiences for Late Night.

Just before the show started, Dave would appear to say hello to the audience. He’d crack a few jokes and answer a question or two. Dave had one joke in particular that got a laugh every time he told it. Before someone asked a question, he’d ask “Where are you from?” And regardless of their answer, he’d say: “Oh! By the laundromat.”

Just being around was pretty damn great. But for me, the best part was watching the show. There were a few chairs and some standing room behind the last row of audience chairs. That’s where the Pages sat during the show’s taping. It’s where, by osmosis, I learned the business of revolutionary, hilarious, mischievous, subversive, anarchical comedy.

And, there were a few days when watching the show got trumped by actually being on the show. Now and again, the show would feature one of the NBC Pages in some in-studio comedy segment. And for reasons I don’t know, I got asked a few times. One time, Dave came back from commercial break and on the TV monitors in the studio, instead of Dave sitting at the desk, the channel changed to various celebrities sitting in Dave’s chair — as if someone was changing the channel. Bruce Willis, then Connie Chung, then Fred Savage, among others. Dave shouted that he knew what was wrong and asked the Page to take care of it. The camera turned to the audience and revealed a guy pointing an oversized remote control. My job was to grab the guy and roughly escort him from the studio.

In the blurry screen grab, I was “guarding” one water fountain marked “Dave.” Beside it, another fountain marked “Staff.” While Dave was sitting at the desk, Chris Elliot suddenly appeared and announced his plan to do something no one has ever done… and that it was about time someone did. Chris pushed me out of the way, and drank from the fountain marked “Dave.” When Chris’ applause died down, Dave dismissed him and demanded he take the fake fountains with him.

OK, so it seems clear how Dave influenced my career. Although I was unsuccessful getting hired on Late Night, thankfully Bill Maher was starting up Politically Incorrect, where I spent five years. Now, what about my wife and friend? Well, a few days after I started my job as a Page, another guy started, too. He and I have been fighting about the best way to lose weight three times a week for 25 years. And, about a year after I started as a Page, a pretty girl showed up to start her first day as a Page. The first time I saw her, I knew I would marry her. And I did.

So, thanks Dave for 30 years of revolutionary, hilarious, mischievous, subversive, anarchical comedy. Oh, yeah. And that other junk, too.

Pink Lipstick Dreams: Ginger Becomes a Submissive Wife

Pink Lipstick Dreams: Ginger Becomes a Submissive Wife

With Ginger’s long black hair cascading over her shoulders against her porcelain pale skin and her sparkling green eyes brightening her face, the combination made her a drop dead gorgeous woman. Ginger knew she was beautiful at a petite size of 5’2″, but with round and perky size “C” cups, her figure was small, but very sexy. She looked in the mirror and put on the lipstick that Ryan had bought her the day before. Ginger had never worn pink lipstick before; it was always the sexy slutty red lipstick that looked good against her skin. But, Ryan, her boyfriend wanted her to wear pink lipstick for him tonight. Tonight was their one year anniversary and he had told her that he had a surprise for her. Ginger was very excited. Ryan had been talking lately a lot about taking their relationship to the next level. Was he going to propose to her? She wondered. Ginger pouted her lips out and pulled off the top of the pink lipstick off. It was a light pink in color with a little shimmer. She slowly applied the pink lipstick to the outline of her lips, then filled in her lips. Ginger had full lips and the pink lipstick made them look even fuller and pouty. When she was finished, her eyes looked even greener than before and her skin was even paler. Ginger actually liked how the pink lipstick looked on her. She then went over to her closet and pulled out the tight fitting pink dress Ryan had bought for her to wear out tonight. She was never used to the color pink. She usually wore black or red clothing. Pink was something new to her. She took the short pink mini dress off the hanger and unzipped it. Ginger already had on pink thigh high stockings attached to a pink garter that matched her pink lace panties with a pink lace bra. All bought for her by Ryan. She slipped the dress on. It was very tight and form fitting. The dress pushed her breasts into a nice cleavage and hugged her small waist and accentuated her round little ass. ‘Damn, I look hot.’ Ginger said out

American Sniper Chris Kyle’s Wife Pens Love Letter On Their Anniversary: I’ll ‘Love You All The Days Of My Life’

“Today, I have a choice. I can bury myself under the covers and acknowledge the pain of missing you and mourn the future anniversaries without you. Or, I can celebrate never having a day without you in my heart because you loved me enough to leave me a lifetime of memories and beauty.”

Those are some the words penned by Taya Kyle on March 17, the day that would’ve marked 13 years of marriage to her husband, the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Kyle, who was credited with being the most lethal sniper in U.S. history, was shot and killed at a Texas gun range in 2013. His life story became the subject of the Clint Eastwood film “American Sniper,” which was based on the best-selling autobiography of the same name.

To mark their wedding anniversary, Taya posted the poignant love letter on Facebook. It has since gone viral, with more than 530,000 likes.

Rosie O’Donnell Is Leaving ‘The View’ After Split From Wife

Rosie O’Donnell is leaving ABC’s “The View,” after a split from her wife Michelle Rounds.

O’Donnell’s spokesperson Cindi Berger confirmed to HuffPost that next week will be O’Donnell’s last on the daytime talk show. It would be the second time she left the program.

ABC also confirmed her departure.

“Rosie is an immensely talented star who comes in each and every morning brimming with ideas, excitement and passion for the show,” ABC’s statement said. “When she told us she wanted to exit ‘The View,’ we respected and understood her desire to put her well-being and her family first. We’re delighted she’s still part of the ABC family with upcoming guest appearances on ‘The Fosters,’ and we know she’ll return to ‘The View’ often with her unique point of view and updates on her work and her family.”

O’Donnell returned to “The View” in September 2014, having previously been a co-host in the 2006-2007 season. Her latest departure was in order to concentrate on her family’s well-being, following her separation from Rounds.

Sources close to O’Donnell told the New York Post’s PageSix that O’Donnell and Rounds had been living apart for months before their separation was announced on Friday night. PageSix, who was first to report the news, said that O’Donnell felt she had to leave the show to be with her five children.

“I can confirm that Rosie and her wife Michelle split in November. Rosie has teens and an infant at home that need her attention. This has been a very stressful situation. She is putting her personal health and family first,” O’Donnell’s spokesperson told HuffPost.

O’Donnell, 52, married Rounds in June 2012, her second marriage. In 2013, they adopted a daughter, who joined O’Donnell’s four other children.

In 2014, “The View” brought on O’Donnell, Rosie Perez, and Nicolle Wallace, in hopes of rejuvenating the show. But ratings continued to struggle, and there have been reports of tension amongst O’Donnell and co-host Whoopi Goldberg, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On Valentine’s Day, HBO will debut a documentary about O’Donnell’s heart attack in 2012.

Anatomy of a 16-Year Wedding Anniversary Present (or What Not to Give Your Wife)

Sugar Daddy (aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I don’t want to talk about it — I’m sorry I made a mistake. I bought you a practical gift. I thought you would like it, I thought you would think it was cute I thought you would think it was warm. And comfortable like our relationship”

Me: “So basically what you are saying is that — after 16 years of marriage — you think the best gift to give me are two pillows and a sheet?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It’s not a sheet it’s a set of flannel sheets and they were expensive.”

Me: “Really — are you really trying to defend your flannel sheets?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “No I knew it was bad.”

Me: “So why the hell did you get it for me — you know I am not all about needing a Harry Winston necklace — but getting two pillows and a sheet makes me think that I have lowered the bar so low that you think it is acceptable to get me a gift that is really more for the house and for you than for me. We both sleep in the bed so really this is a gift for you. Nothing abut this gift says : ‘I love you, I still think you are hot, I cherish you.’ To me this gift says, ‘You are as exciting to me as a broomstick. So… I think you should take your pillows and sheets and get your own bed and sleep someplace else.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Oh c’mon I looked at all the things and went past the jewelry store and I even looked for a doll for you.”

Me: “So — you couldn’t find ANYTHING except for sensible pillows and sheets to show me how much you love me???”

I am ashamed to have to write this post — but I’m doing it for all those wives who get HORRIBLE ANNIVERSARY PRESENTS to try and figure out what goes on inside the mind of the married man. So please enlighten me.

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “You said not to spend a lot of money — in fact you said not to buy you anything.”

Me: “YOU KNOW you should never listen to what I say.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I never learn.”

Me: “And of all the things you saw — your thought was — Oh I’ll pass on the candle and the jewelry and make a beeline for the home goods section?! Please explain yourself.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was just a lack of imagination and romance.”

Me:” It makes me feel like you see me as a scullery maid. First of all the sheets you got — they are not even my STYLE.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I thought they were cute and warm.”

Me: “And how does this gift encapsulate 16 years of marriage — after 16 years you see me as someone who would love getting pillows and a sheet? what does this say about what you think of me and the years we have spent together? You see me at my finest when my eyes are closed ad my mouth is shut — asleep in bed?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was dumb, what can I say. I just had no imagination, I didn’t see anything I liked, jewelry seemed superfluous, you have jewelry… I don’t know.”

Me: “And you didn’t think this would read as totally unromantic?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch) : “I knew it was, I don’t know why I did it, I couldn’t think of anything.”

Me: “Why would a husband do this to his wife?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I did never learn that being practical when it comes to gifts is BAD. I should’ve gotten you something that would make you feel special — which is what I wanted to do with the pillows and sheets.”

Me: “How would pillows and sheets makes me feel special?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Because it was given from my heart — I wanted to give you something from my heart , I didn’t have any ideas what to get you.”

Me: “A pillow and sheets is from your heart — I don’t get it?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I though t it was something we needed and I thought you would like it even though it wasn’t romantic. I’m sorry I wish I could take it back. Now it’s too late.”

Me: To me this says — you have no idea who I am or what I like.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It just seemed like buying you an expensive gift would’ve been just to get you a gift — it still wouldn’t have meant anymore. It would have been a waste of money to buy you a necklace.”

Me: “That’s what anniversaries are for — to splurge and get something you wouldn’t get on an average shopping trip to the mall. YOU messed up buddy big time. To me this says — I am not of value — I am not worth the splurge… I am a sensible pillow and sheets kind of wife.”

My Wife Told Me She Wants to Cheat, Here’s How I Feel

When Elloa Atkinson confessed to the Internet that she wanted to cheat on her husband, the Internet went crazy. Here is her husband Nige’s side of the story.

Elloa and Nige:

We had reservations about republishing this, originally shared on The Good Men Project, here. Therefore we’d like to say at the outset that there is no prescription here, no recommendation or suggestion about how other people “should” conduct themselves. We do our best to live by the principle of emotional responsibility which states that I am 100 percent responsible for my experience, as you are for yours. The concept of honesty is one part of this, and while it feels risky, it is, as our teachers Duane and Catherine O’Kane write, “far less risky than acting out.” We share this story for the people who want to believe that vulnerability, as scary as it feels, is ultimately worth the risk.

Elloa:

I wrote a post about wanting to cheat on my husband, and it went viral. The response was mixed, the opinions passionate. The only voice that was noticeably absent was that of my husband, Nige.

This didn’t seem right, but it did feel significant, symbolic of the collective vow of silence that today’s men are living under.

While some people expressed their outrage that I would hurt my husband in this way, others shared either publicly or privately that they too have had these kind of thoughts, fantasies and yes, even obsessions. Still others protested that if a man were to speak about being attracted to women whilst in a relationship, he would be lambasted.

This conversation, sparked by my article, appears to be one we are ready to have. The next step was clear. It was time for Nige to speak.

***

Nige:

A few weeks ago, when Elloa disclosed her secret attraction, I felt like my stomach had been clamped in a vice. Then, as her confession came, an inward surge of Hulk-like anger, all too familiar. My thoughts were no different than some of the judgmental comments that appeared in reaction to her article on The Huffington Post. Let’s face it: the ego always speaks first, and often cruelly.

The difference was, I know enough about this part of my mind not to voice my thoughts at this point. The first thing I have to do in these moments is take a breath, then another one, then another one. If I react now, it’s game on for the ego, but game over for the relationship — and I won’t let the ego win, because it viciously guards a set of mistaken beliefs that drive me further and further away from the one thing I truly want the most: love.

Therefore, Elloa and I have a contract about disclosing our secrets and dark thoughts to each other. We both understand that secrets kill relationships, and see so many couples playing a long-term game of hide and seek with each other. In our marriage, we are determined to fully know and be known by the other, and that means having the kind of raw, honest conversation that Elloa’s article described. The purpose of this is to go beyond the secret thought to the fear of who we are underneath, the fear that is driving that secret thought, desire or behavior.

Having this depth of honesty in our communication is not easy. It is scary, vulnerable and unpredictable.

Fortunately, we have enough tools in our relationship kitbag to be able to work through any form of upset in a safe and contained way, without using the other person as a dumping ground. The critical element in the whole process is the intention that we both set at the beginning.

We did what we always do in this situation, utilizing a therapeutic process (adapted from Clearmind International) that forms a core part of our relationship. The process gives permission to the reactive, raging part of my mind to unleash its fury for three solid minutes without any kind of reaction whatsoever from Ell. Crucial to the process is that she remains neutral, and that no physical boundaries are crossed whatsoever.

When the other person refuses to fight back but also stays the course and remains in a place of neutrality (not always easy to do), something amazing happens: the brutal, vicious attacking part of our mind gives way and we literally “drop” into our feelings. This is the place no man wants to go — a pit of despair, self-loathing, shame and loneliness.

My anger, directed initially towards Elloa for her “disgusting” behavior, was really masking a deep wound that I have carried since I was a boy — the belief that I in fact am completely inadequate and unloveable.

***

2014-10-30-ScreenShot20141030at7.45.04PM.png

The root of this belief lies in my childhood, during which I lost a testicle after being kicked by another boy and the subsequent taunting, which dogged me for most of my schooldays. I grew up believing I was a freak. I called myself the odd man out.

Fast forward 39 years and there I am with my wife, feeling 6 years old again: raw, exposed and vulnerable, with my head in my hands. I am terrified to look up, afraid she will reject me. In that moment, I feel deeply ashamed of who I am.

I know there is only one way through this shame — I have to make contact. I have to let her see me, otherwise I’ll just be an empty shell. If I don’t let her into my world, then I’m doomed to walk this planet as a zombie, a man with a plastic smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. And yet there is so much I want to say. Somehow, I have to take a risk and open up.

As a man, I haven’t been taught by our society how to express my feelings. It’s as taboo as wanting to cheat, forbidden in daily life and permissible only in the direst of circumstances. Even then, only a few tears are allowed before the words “man up” come into play.

Even now, after nearly three decades of inner work, speaking about how I feel often feels clumsy and awkward for me. However, experience has taught me not to listen to the shaming voice that tells me that I’m weak if I cry.

So on the day Ell told me about her crush, I let her hold me while my body shook and the tears poured out of me. I told her everything I fear I am and she just listened, just held me and let me let it all out.

Eventually, I came to a quieter place. The dam, once burst, doesn’t gush water uncontrollably forever. The wave subsides. I am left with my beliefs.

***

After the outrage and attack, after the shame and the guilt, after the tears, there is a moment of true choice. This is the state from which I can change my mind, because here, I am open. Here, I am willing to accept help. I ask my wife, this woman who just a few minutes ago I thought was the cause of all my pain, to help me remember who I am.

And the truth comes back to me. I am not the odd man out. I never was. I am strong. I am worth loving. I am good. And nothing can be taken from me because I have everything I need within.

This is not a theoretical or intellectual knowing, it is an experience I inhabit when I work through, rather than dance around or avoid, my deepest fears. The function of my relationship isn’t to avoid experiencing pain or the realization of my fears — it is to give each other a soft place to land when one of us needs to show up, knowing that the healing is always twofold.

Elloa revealing her attraction therefore became a catalyst for me to expose a war wound that I carry on a daily basis and to do the work of changing my perception of myself. I do not do this work alone. I do it from a mindset of making conscious contact with my wife and with myself.

I’m a normal guy; I have thoughts of sexual attraction towards other women almost every day. Some are fleeting while others linger. It’s the ones that linger that trouble me the most. But I know that with each attraction there is an opportunity — often not as dramatic as this one — to take a step closer to my wife, to myself and to being the type of man I want the world to know exists.

And that is why, in our household, my wife Elloa is always welcome to tell the truth, and why I tell mine in return.

Find out more from Nige Atkinson about breaking the vow of male silence.

Wife Has Very Specific Instructions On How She Wants To Be Woken Up At 5 A.M.

Waking someone who is admittedly not a morning person before 7 a.m. is much like waking up a hibernating bear from his cave. At times it can be much, much worse.

That’s why one wife, who is not big on mornings, made sure to draft this handwritten contract when asking her husband to wake her up at 5 a.m. so she could get to work early before a big project.

If you read the note carefully, you will notice that after solemnly promising not to get mad at him, the wife stipulates that he may not wake her up by “grabbing my boob and shaking it.”

While that doesn’t exactly sound pleasant, it still beats an alarm clock, if you ask us.

Edie Windsor Looks Back On Life With Late Wife Thea Spyer

Defense of Marriage Act plaintiff Edith Windsor and her late wife Thea Spyer’s love story spanned more than 40 years. The pair was together up until Spyer’s death in 2009.

On Thursday, Windsor told HuffPost Live’s Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani that she stills feels her late wife’s absence, even years after her death — and not just on big days like when the Supreme Court ruled DOMA unconstitutional last June, but on regular days too.

“I constantly go looking to tell her something, if something exciting has happened,” Windsor said. “I mean I literally walk into a room before I realize what I’m doing.”

She also reminisced about her early days falling in love with Spyer: “I dug her. I thought she was great. I thought she was beautiful. I thought she was all kinds of things.”

For more on Spyer and Windsor’s lifelong love story, watch the segment above. You can also watch the full segment here.

‘Good Wife’ Leaves Viewers Shocked, Bereaved (SPOILER ALERT!)

NEW YORK (AP) — Viewers of “The Good Wife” were gobsmacked by the sudden, unexpected death of its dashing attorney, Will Gardner, on Sunday’s episode of the CBS legal drama.

Gardner, a prominent character portrayed by Josh Charles since the series’ debut five seasons ago, was gunned down in a Chicago courtroom by his unhinged client. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Once the episode had aired, Twitter lit up with astonished, sorrowful and even irate posts.

One viewer called for a group hug, while another issued a plea for a counselor to treat jolted fans. Yet another viewer expressed hope that, as with “Dallas” long ago in revealing Bobby Ewing’s death to be only a dream, “The Good Wife” would find Gardner stepping out of his shower next week, alive and well.

Other viewers vowed never to watch the show again, as payback.

Gardner was a rival lawyer and former lover of the character played by series star Julianna Margulies.

His death and Charles’ decision to exit the show had been well-guarded secrets. Charles, who entered the series with a four-year contract, opted not to re-up when it expired after last season, according to his publicist.

Charles’ past TV work includes the ABC dramedy series “SportsNight” and a season playing a client of therapist Gabriel Byrne on the HBO drama “In Treatment.”

As a Wife, I’m Guilty of These 5 Mistakes (And You Probably Are, Too)

After writing “I’m Guilty of These 5 Parenting Mistakes (And You Probably Are, Too),” I knew that I needed to write a post that pays homage to the major muck-ups that I make as a wife. Maybe I’ll also blog about the mistakes that I make as a rainbow loom maker, Turbo Tax user and fitted sheet folder. Seriously, when it comes to mistakes, I’m experienced on how to make them in all areas.

My husband and I have been together for 12 years. It’s sometimes hard to believe that if our relationship were a person it would be in the seventh grade, donning shiny braces and saying asinine things like “cray cray” and “totes.”

Like all relationships, we’ve had our ups and downs. We’ve had arguments that ended with slamming doors and Michelin tires screeching down the driveway. We’ve declared our love and apologies over the phone once our tempers and transmissions cooled down. We’ve talked out our problems until the sun came up or one of husband’s farts lightened the mood. We’ve prayed together, cried together, laughed together and gotten food poisoning together after eating disgusting undercooked burgers doused in Heinz 57.

Most importantly, we have prevailed. We have persevered. We are raising two unbelievable children (despite our parenting mistakes), and we both have the same vision of someday pointing our rocking chairs towards the west, watching our grandchildren score major grass stains on the lawn and sharing Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements.

However, as a wife, I make mistakes. And I make them often. I don’t need other wives telling me what mistakes I make, because I’m aware of them. You don’t need me telling you what mistakes you make, either, but you probably make these.

1. R-E-S-P-E-C-T

I sometimes forget that my husband is my husband. He’s been around for so long that it seems like he’s just some dude leaving crumbs of Wavy Lays on the couch and dirty boxers on the floor right next to the hamper. I forget that he’s a hard worker, a wonderful provider and a loving father. I forget that sometimes my sarcasm and jokes hit below the belt. I forget that my job as his wife is to encourage him, compliment him, value him and support him. I often forget that he deserves my utmost respect.

2. Let’s Get It On

I’m tired. I’m tired a lot. By 9 p.m., the only things on my mind are folding the laundry, putting the kids’ snacks in their backpacks, locking the doors, feeding the malnourished fish, setting the clocks, brushing my teeth, lotioning my ashy elbows and getting into the bed to watch a show that does NOT involve animated pirates, sappy music while Danny Tanner resolves an issue, restoring cars or selling rare finds at a Las Vegas pawn shop. I want to relax and heave a collected sigh of relief that the day is done. I have no desire to play birds and bees. But, by God, men need it. They might just implode if they don’t get it. My husband is just as in need as the hungry Beta Fish. I often forget that I’m the one that must meet the need, whether or not I’m in the need-meeting mood.

3. Nothing Compares 2 U

Since the day my first child was born in 2006, she has been my reason for living. When her brother came along in 2010, he ranked right next to her on my priorities list. My children’s happiness and well-being far trumps anything in my life. Sometimes their needs trump my husband’s happiness and well-being. Date night shouldn’t solely be about my SAHM batteries recharging and how many margaritas I can consume before it’s time to go home. It should be about refreshing our relationship. I often forget that my husband needs my attention, my encouragement and my admiration as much as, if not more than, my children.

4. Control

I may make a ton of mistakes, but I know how to properly load a dishwasher. I also know how to hang a picture where it will be the most aesthetically pleasing in our home. I can discipline a kid and cook a meatloaf and I can pick out window treatments. I don’t need help in any of these areas, but my husband sometimes thinks that he should deposit two pennies into those accounts. Before I even hear his suggestion on how to cram more dishes into the dishwasher or where to hang the portrait or how to spice up dinner, I shoot him down (see no. 1, R-E-S-P-E-C-T). Sometimes I make him think that his idea is the worst idea since Miley Cyrus squatted on a wrecking ball. I often forget that my husband has pretty good ideas and although I’ll never admit it to him, that picture would look better over the mantle.

5. Pretty Woman

I once sent my husband the most brutally honest text message: “Let me know what time you’ll be home so I can get out of my pajamas and appear to have been productive today.” Some days the extent of my beauty regimen is brushing my teeth and popping the zit on my chin. If it’s a particularly cold day, I refuse to wear anything that didn’t come from the Gap Athletic Wear Collection. (FYI — you don’t have to actually be athletic to wear athletic wear). But, I know my husband appreciates it when I look nice. He never fails to tell me that I look beautiful when I’ve cleaned up and accessorized with scarves and dangly earrings. Some women like to believe that “inner beauty” is all a man needs. Newsflash — it’s not. Inner beauty is a wonderful, pure, lovely, noble thing. But a man also appreciates a nice-looking woman. I’m not saying that all women should morph into June Cleaver and mop Kool-Aid from the floor while wearing stilettos, but I often forget that removing eye boogers, washing the Crisco from my hair and trading the yoga pants for regular clothes once in a while is a step in the right direction.

Some days I feel as if I’ve really mucked up the whole wife-y thing. I rudely rolled my eyes at my husband, I didn’t pat him on the back when he really needed it, I put my own needs and my children’s needs before his. And the guilt sets in because I’ve got a really good man — he’s faithful, he’s hard-working, he’s kind, he’s easy-going. Watching him interact with our children still melts my heart and makes me smile.

I often forget to do the right thing in our marriage, but I’ll never forget how much I love my husband. That love is what fuels my desire to be better. That love is what makes me better today than yesterday. That love is the same love that will be in my heart when we rock on our back porch and watch our children and grandchildren. That love will be there when I forget to buy him Miralax or put tennis balls on his walker. I’ll always make mistakes, but that love will always remain.

I’m Letting My Wife Go

2014-02-14-Buddies.jpg

I’m sure it may come as a shock to some people, but I let my wife go. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but it was the right thing for the both of us.

No, we’re not getting a divorce and no, we’re not separating. Truth be told, the practice of “letting go” has actually brought us closer together. But in order to understand what I mean by “letting go,” you must first understand that Kim and I are two very different people.

In fact, the differences between us were Kim’s primary concern with us getting married. “Seth, a fish may love a bird,” she said. “But where would they live?”

I smiled at the comparison because it’s fairly accurate.

Kim and I are incredibly different people. She’s the oldest in her family; I’m the youngest in mine. She’s very responsible; I’m…very much not. She loves the city; I prefer the country. She loves healthy food; I love junk food. She enjoys school; I despise school. She wants to watch British dramas; I’d rather watch comedies. She loves to sing and dance; I’d rather not. She prefers flying; I prefer driving. She loves to be with people, and I’d prefer to be alone. Kim is a driven, career-minded, goal-oriented woman, while I, on the other hand, am a laid-back fellow who prefers gardening and writing over anything else.

To put it simply, Kim is an extrovert while I am an introvert. Frankly, it sometimes amazes me that Kim and I even metlet alone got married!

But after knowing Kim for ten years, I knew that I simply couldn’t live without her.

Despite their many differences, the fish loved the bird and the bird loved the fish.

So we put our faith in that love and did the only thing a fish and a bird could do: we got married and built a bird bath.

The bird bath is a symbol for our middle ground — the place where we come together — but it’s also the place from which we feel comfortable to let each other go. To “let go” of someone is to love them enough to let them fly or swim away (or to be themselves) and yet trust that they will always come back.

For if we truly love each other, we have to be willing to “let each other go” to become the best versions of ourselves. Kim encourages me to keep swimming (develop my talents), and I encourage her to fly higher (chase her dreams).

Abusive, one-sided relationships are heartbreaking to me. How can we claim to love someone and then try to limit that person’s identity? Marriage is a union, to be sure, but it’s a union that should liberate, not incarcerate. Real love shouldn’t limit a person’s potential, it should expand it.

Real love tells me to let Kim fly and trust that she’ll always come back. I have to let her go so she can chase her dreams, pursue her education and develop her talents. Additionally, I have to let go of my fears that she might fly away and never come back. If the fish were to clip the bird’s wings, he would risk trimming her dreams and smothering her altogether.

That being said, I wish I could say that I’m perfect at letting my wife fly. But I’m not. In the end, we’re still two very different people. I have some deeply rooted insecurities, and we’ve had to learn to navigate each other’s personalities.

But while I certainly can’t tell you that I’m perfect, I can tell you that every time I’ve encouraged Kim to fly she loves me all the more for supporting her and having the faith to let her go.

So, if you truly love someone, have the faith to “let them go.” Encourage them to be the fullest measure of themselves, and you will be overwhelmed by the love that your spouse returns to you.
