Keselowski wins 600 to extend Johnson’s losing streak

Brad Keselowski, in a contract year and trying to up his value in free agency, gave Roger Penske a victory on what should have been the most celebrated day in motorsports but was instead just a 6-plus hour NASCAR show. Keselowski extended Jimmie Johnson's losing streak to 102 races by holding off the seven-time NASCAR champion in overtime early Monday to win the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on the NASCAR schedule. It was the first win for Keselowski this season, his first Coca-Cola 600 victory and the first win at this event for Ford since 2002.

Fury wins in stunning stoppage of Wilder in heavyweight tilt

Tyson Fury reinvented himself once again, and once again he's a heavyweight champion. The Gypsy King dropped Deontay Wilder twice Saturday night in their heavyweight title rematch, turning from boxer to puncher to win the title when Wilder's corner threw in the towel as he was taking a beating in the seventh round. It was a stunning turnaround for a fighter who came back from drug and alcohol abuse to win the title for a second time, made even more surprising because Wilder was the devastating puncher in their first fight 14 months ago.

Wilder vs Fury 2 result: Tyson Fury wins in seventh round as Deontay Wilder corner throws in towel

The world knew that Tyson Fury was  special, but the performance to brutally dominate Deontay Wilder with a blend of boxing nous combined with power and poise raises the 31-year-old pugilist of the traveller race to the level of extraordinary. The 'Gypsy King' compelled the dangerous knockout artist Wilder to a forlorn figure, beaten up, bleeding from the ear, bullied to the level that the Alabaman's corner threw in the towel in the seventh round after an unabated beating. It was so one-sided, it is doubtful whether Wilder will activate the trilogy rematch clause.

Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho Just Tied This Man for Most Oscar Wins in One Night

Not only did Bong Joo-ho’s Parasite make history at this year’s Oscars by being the first non-English language film to win the Best Picture award, but the writer/director himself actually tied a creative icon for most Oscar wins in a single ceremony.

Bong Joo-ho took home four Oscars tonight – for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best International Feature Film. In doing do he tied the record for most single night wins with…Walt Disney.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=oscar-record-holders&captions=true”]

Disney too brought home four Oscars back in 1954 – for The Living Desert (Best Documentary Feature), The Alaskan Eskimo (Best Documentary Short), Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom (Best Short Subject Cartoon), and Bear Country (Best Short Subject Two-Reel).

The pool for those who’ve taken home only three Oscars in one sitting is a little more crowed, as eleven people have accomplished that – including James Cameron, Peter Jackson and Alfonso Cuarón, to name a few.

Oscars 2020: Netflix Only Wins Two Academy Awards

While this year’s Academy Awards ceremony is notable for showering Parasite and director Bong Joon-ho in awards, and for giving Joaquin Phoenix a long overdue Best Actor Oscar, not every film was so fortunate. Looking at the lineup of Oscar winners, one consistent theme emerges – Netflix didn’t fare so well this year.

In fact, though Netflix-distributed films earned a total of 24 nominations in various categories, only two of those nominations actually resulted in winners – Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress and American Factory for Best Feature Documentary. Here’s a closer look at where Netflix came up short.

[widget path=”global/article/imagegallery” parameters=”albumSlug=best-reviewed-movies-of-2019&captions=true”]

The Irishman Shut Out

The Irishman was easily Netflix’s biggest awards contender coming into the ceremony, with the Martin Scorsese-directed crime drama earning no fewer than ten Academy Award nominations. Those nominations included Best Picture, Best Director and two separate Best Supporting Actor noms for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. While the Academy has been notoriously stingy about doling out Oscars to Scorsese films – Scorsese himself didn’t take home a Best Director Oscar until 2006’s The Departed – it seemed like a safe bet The Irishman would receive some amount of recognition this year, if only in celebration of Scorsese’s long, storied career.

Instead, The Irishman was completely shut out of the awards, even in the Best Supporting Actor category. The Academy has been slow to recognize Netflix and other streaming services as legitimate competitors to the traditional Hollywood studios. The friction between Netflix and theater chains about the length of The Irishman’s exclusive theatrical window may not have helped, either.

Marriage Story’s Lone Win

After The Irishman, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story was Netflix’s best chance at boosting its Oscar pedigree. And it did come through thanks to Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress, but after that early victory, Marriage Story was completely forgotten. While the film was always seen as a long shot for Best Picture, both Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson were considered strong contenders to win Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. We suppose it never pays to go up against the Joker.

[ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/09/30/the-irishman-review”]

Other Netflix Shut-Outs

Apart from Dern’s Oscar and American Factory’s Best Feature Documentary win, it wasn’t a great night for Netflix at the Academy Awards. The Two Popes was nominated in three categories – Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay – but lost in all three. Nor did Klaus manage to stop Toy Story 4 from bringing home yet another Best Animated Feature Film award for Pixar.

In general, Netflix’s performance in 2020 is a far cry from its 2019 successes. Netflix may have had fewer nominations last year (15), but it won more awards. The streaming service got a huge boost from Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, which won Oscars for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. We’ll see if Netflix is able to bounce back in 2021.

Elon Musk wins defamation trial over ‘pedo’ remarks

Elon Musk wins defamation trial over ‘pedo’ remarksA lawyer representing Vernon Unsworth called Elon Musk a "billionaire bully," and sought up to $ 190 million in damages but a jury decided in his favor anyway. They ruled that his series of tweets last year that referenced Unsworth as a "pedo guy" and promised a "signed dollar" if it was true were not defamatory.

Musk also called Unsworth a "child rapist" in emails to a Buzzfeed reporter, but the court case was not a judgement over that statement, or his decision to pay a private investigator $ 50,000 to investigate the man.

The diver became a target of the comments that Musk called a "common insult" after he disparaged Musk's unused plan to involve a miniature submarine in the rescue of 12 boys and a soccer coach trapped in a cave. Unsworth participated in the rescue effort and is credited with helping recruit divers who helped bring the boys to safety.

Love Wins For You And Me

The United State Supreme Court ruled today for same sex marriage to be legal nationwide, and as I read the various articles telling this wonderful truth, I told my son to come into the living room. The sun was shining through our window and his gray eyes glistened and grew bigger as I sat him down and told him that I had something very important to tell him. As he stared at me, wondering what was going on, I told him that, as an almost-6-year old, he would remember today. Today is the day that history was made in the United States. I explained to him that now, men could marry men and women could marry women. His response was telling and simple: “That’s great, Mama. People who love one another can now spend their lives together.” He summed it up perfectly and went back to play. It IS great. People can spend their lives together. It’s that simple truth, echoed in his response to me. Love really did win today. It won for us all.

I was allowed to marry because I’m a woman and I married a man. My husband and I celebrated our 13 year wedding anniversary this week, and with every year that passed, I often thought about the many people who wanted to marry but could not. When we were out to dinner, my husband reached for my hand — my hand with my wedding rings and his hand with his tattooed band crossed across the table and we sat and connected, celebrating our marriage. This sanctity of marriage, this connection despite the difficulties, is what has sustained me and our lives together. We reminisced about our past, talked about the kids, and dreamed about our future. But this hand holding really sat with me all week — this connection and our commitment to one another, symbolized by our wedding bands crossing together.

When he reached for my hand that night, I flashed back over the past 20 years in that one gesture. As we drove back home with the top down, the wind blowing in my hair and the setting sun’s rays hitting my back, I remembered our past — the 13 years married and the seven years before that. I remembered how I left my high school prom with a wild, blonde-haired boy driving his cousin’s Mustang convertible and how that started a 20 year love affair. How we named our daughter on a dark country road, driving with the windows down, 18 years before she was even born. How he traveled the world and so did I, but how we ended up back together, somehow. How I walked down a long pier to a submarine hatch to deliver him dinner pre-9/11. How we finally were married (after what seemed like an eternity but wasn’t) and how amazing it felt to be connected to someone in that way.

All of that has turned into a legacy that we have created, together. We traveled together, married. We moved together, married. We built a life together, married. We have had two beautiful children together, married. My marriage is a gift and sometimes, it is work, hard work. But all the best things are. Marriage isn’t always perfect and it certainly isn’t a decision everyone should make or that everyone even wants to make. It’s a choice, and one that I’m so happy everyone is now free to make. Love wins today for all.

Star Wars Tech vs. Star Trek Tech: Who Wins?

Which is the more technologically advanced civilization–the Federation of Star Trek or the Galactic Republic of Star Wars?: originally appeared on Quora: The best answer to any question. Answer by Todd Gardiner

Let’s compare the two, side-by-side.

Transportation

We have hyper engines that go through hyperspace compared to warp drives that travel through normal space at FTL speeds. Technical data books indicate that the speeds and range of hyper drives are greater, however.

We have also repulsor craft that hover over the ground in the Empire, but not much is shown of Federation ground transport, although anti-grav units are used to move heavy objects. But the Federation has one edge: teleportation.

I’m going to consider them even here, based on having different advantages.

Energy Generation

Both empires seem to be able to produce unlimited power for their needs. The amount directed to any one use might be limited, but fuel seems to be endless. While the exact fuel for the Empire is unclear, it seems to be on-par with the Federation’s antimatter engines (although often at much larger scales, e.g. The Death Star). Another tie.

Communication

Both spacefaring civilizations have FTL communication that is not instantaneous at long distances. There are language translators that work in real time in the Federation, but these might just be for explorers. Citizens of the Empire seem to prefer being polyglot, but protocol droids are available for translation. Slight edge to the Federation here. (+1/2)

Manufacturing

The Federation is able to use replicators to nearly instantly produce food, durable goods and tools. Apparently it cannot produce all elements and molecules, perhaps needed a “base supply” of matter to convert into finished items, rather than just converting energy into matter directly. But holodecks have shown that it can instantly produce and break down the matter it works with.

The Empire, especially on the frontier, depends on trade. The movement of rare resources and finished goods is the center of their economy, indicating that they have no similar manufacturing capability. Plus one for the Federation.

Construction

Both civilizations build large spaceships in orbit. While the Federation can produce starbases which are large cities, the Empire makes Star Destroyers and was able to produce two Death Stars (one in secret). It seems that Empire construction methods are superior. Plus one for the Empire.

Military

Ground troops for both civilizations make use of hand-held energy weapons, some of which are powerful enough to vaporize their target, although the later are not commonly used (too few shots?) Neither seem to use personal energy shields.

Vehicles similarly use weapons the scale-up with the size of the vehicle, although vehicles are large enough that they can supply the energy needed to maintain shields that defend against energy weapons. The extremely large size of Empire ships mean large shields, thus fighters are more heavily used to penetrate the shields physically and then deliver weapons attacks. But the two seem to be on-par technologically here and I don’t see one side having an advantage over the other, should they fight each other with the same mass of ships or number of ground troops with air support.

Medical Technology

Severe injuries that do not result in brain death seem to be reparable. For some reason the Federation seems to be plagued with hundreds of rare and hard to identify diseases on its border (more often across it, perhaps). But they are able to treat them with a minimum of fatalities.

The Empire has a greater use of cybernetics (Repli-Limb Prosthetic Replacements), although it is unclear if this is cultural or if they lack some sort of limb regeneration technology that the Federation might be using off camera. On the other hand, Gordi did have cybernetic sight…

Both are also known to use cloning technology (in secret) and to genetically modify members for specialty purposes (again, rarely).

Lack of firm details here results in another tie.

Robotics and Computing

The Empire has a love of creating seemingly sentient robots to function as servants. The Federation has produced many robots, but does not tend to use them alongside human crews. Use in construction and other off-camera activities seems to be the primary use.

But then, the two sentient robots (Data and Lore) are afforded full human rights (and criminal responsibility for their actions), possibly unlike in the Empire. Certainly the difficulty in production is not rewarded by an economic return of gaining a specialized servant.

The Federation does seem to prefer using semi-sentient computers for their starships, however. There is no sign that The Empire does this with their ships. In fact, you often need a droid to interface with the ship computer.

In the end, a small advantage to the Empire (+1/2)

[Update: the new Star Trek movie has an apparently robotic crewman on the bridge of the Enterprise. Perhaps they are ret-conning to incorporate “droids”.]

Field Manipulation

Both empires have mastered the control of projected fields, artificial gravity, ship integrity fields and so on. Shield generators are standard gear for starships and can be placed in ground installations. Some cloaking technology exists for both, as does projecting holograms.

Another tie.

“Social” Technology

Although this is not being considered here, I would like to point out that the smaller Federation has made use of social institutions which are more “advanced” than the Empire. The Federation is a non-discriminating, post-scarcity economy which no longer uses money and is interested in the betterment of all of its citizens equally. The Empire exists as a feudal state (or Republic, before and after the rise of the Empire) with slavery common, an unequal sharing of resources, and a culture that accepts bounty hunters and smugglers, at least on the fringes of civilization.

Final Result: A tie.

The Federation has transporters, personal translators, holodecks and replicators.

The Empire has droids, faster/further warp drive travel, massive construction projects, energy generation that scales linearly with its construction projects, and cybernetics.

Also keep in mind that the Empire is much, much larger. It spans the entire galaxy. There are civilizations in the Federation’s galaxy whose technology dwarfs both the Federation and the Empire.

Humble Plumber Wins $136 Million Lottery, Still Wants To Continue Working

NEW YORK (AP) — A Staten Island plumber who won a $ 136 million Powerball jackpot said Thursday he wants to keep working — but also plans to “relax a little more.”

Anthony Perosi, 56, left his March 14 ticket pinned to the wall behind a basement pipe for six weeks.

The winner, Anthony Perosi, on right, and his son, Anthony Perosi III.

A friend had told him where the winning ticket had been purchased, but she thought a teacher had won. So he took his time checking the numbers, which he’d chosen randomly.

“When I saw all the numbers matched up, I panicked,” Perosi said. “I immediately called my son and asked him to come over right away!”

Anthony Perosi III did what he was told.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said the 27-year-old. “I checked the numbers on my phone and it has been surreal ever since.”

The cash value of the ticket came to $ 88.5 million. The father decided to share his winnings with his son, split 70-30. So dad gets a net lump sum of $ 38.6 million after required withholdings, and son pockets $ 16.5 million.

“I honestly don’t know what my plans are right now,” said the elder Perosi. “I want to continue to work, but will be able to relax a little more and not have any worries financially.”

“I don’t have words for it,” said the son. “It’s just unbelievable and a big relief; like a big weight is off my shoulders. I’ll probably pay some bills, take a vacation, and then really take some time to think and plan for the future.”

Sweden Wins 2015 Eurovision Song Contest

VIENNA (AP) — Sweden won the 60th Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, finishing ahead of Russia, whose contestant received some boos as the Ukraine conflict spilled over into the continent’s largest songfest.

Italy came in third. Australia, which was given a wild-card entry for this year due to its enthusiastic fan base and took part for the first time, was a dark horse, with many hoping candidate Guy Sebastian would triumph and secure a place for the country next year.

His failure to do so, placing fifth, means Australia will probably not be back next year.

The race between Russia and Sweden went back and forth for most of the evening as jurors from 40 countries cast their ballots, along a worldwide audience voting by phone and app.

The win by Mans Zelmerlow and his song “Heroes” marks a record seventh time that Sweden has taken top honors in the contest.

His win comes 41 years after that of Swedish group Abba, whose triumph in 1974 with “Waterloo” launched their world career.

About 200 million people watched on TV Saturday as the 27 finalists battled it out musically. Approximately 10,000 people followed the contest live in Vienna’s mammoth Stadthalle.

Last year’s win by bearded cross-dresser Conchita Wurst vaulted the contest into even greater worldwide popularity.

Wurst, who co-hosted the show, was critical of the scattered boos that met Russian contestant Polina Gagarina and her pacifist-themed song “A Million Voices,” calling the reaction “incomprehensible.”

‘The Bachelorette’ Season 11 Episode 2 Recap: Kaitlyn Bristowe Wins — And Gives Roses To A Few Losers

It’s 2015. By now, reality TV is a young adult, but it hasn’t grown out of “The Bachelor” franchise. Despite its bizarre dating rituals, low success rate, and questionable racial and gender politics, the stable of shows is, if anything, more popular than ever. Do people love “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” or do they love to hate it? It’s unclear. But here at Here To Make Friends, we both love and love to hate them — and we love to snarkily dissect each episode in vivid detail.

In this week’s second Here To Make Friends podcast (it is a two-part premiere … thanks, ABC), hosts Claire Fallon, HuffPost culture writer, and Emma Gray, senior editor of HuffPost Women, recap the May 19 episode of “The Bachelorette,” Season 11. We’ll break down the conclusion of the two-Bachelorette thing, Kaitlyn’s taste in men and the slut-shamey, sex talk season highlights. (Also… the return of Nick Viall?!)

You can check out our past and future episodes of Here To Make Friends and other HuffPost Podcasts on The Huffington Post’s Sound Cloud page. Thanks to our producer, Katelyn Bogucki and our editor Jorge Corona.

Also, check out the HuffPost Here To Make Friends podcast on iTunes and make sure to rate and review the show, too.

Azealia Banks Calls BET Awards ‘Bogus,’ Says Nicki Minaj Wins ‘Every Year’

Azealia Banks is never one to hide her feelings, and it’s safe to say she’s really not feeling her BET Award nomination for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Trina, Tink and Dej Loaf are up for the honor along with Banks, who took to Twitter on Monday to express her thoughts on the “bogus” award show:

Minaj certainly has been a favorite at the BET Awards and has taken home the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the last five consecutive years. She has yet to respond to Banks’ comments, but she’s likely basking in the afterglow of dropping the video for “Feeling Myself” with Beyonce.

Besides, Banks claims her comments weren’t supposed to be taken as jabs at Minaj anyway:
