You can now subscribe to Amazon’s video service without joining Prime

Next month, millions of Netflix subscribers will see an increase in their monthly subscription fee from $ 9 per month to $ 10. While this alone might not be enough to cost the service many subscribers, when combined with Netflix’s shrinking catalog, it could cause some dissatisfied customers to jump ship, and Amazon will be right there to catch them. As of yesterday evening, users looking to watch streaming video via Amazon Prime Video no longer needed a $ 100 per year membership in order to do so. The company now offers a standalone subscription to Prime Video, available for $ 9 per month.Related:  Netflix’s price hike to $ 10 per month will hit 17 million subscribers in May If customersdo want the other benefits of a Prime membership, but don’t want to commit to a full year, Amazon also now offers month-to-month pricing for Prime. That plan costs $ 11 per month, and includes everything in the standard yearly plan, including Prime Video streaming. Of course, the yearly plan still ends up costing the least, but this is a nice way for potential customers to give the service a try. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the option to pay monthly for Prime. Last month Amazon began offering monthly Prime pricing through Sprint for the same $ 11 per month price tag, and it has experimented with monthly pricing as far back as 2012, though the company has said that its customers generally prefer to pay yearly. Even the standalone Prime Video subscription isn’t new, at least outside of the U.S. Amazon has been offering Prime Video subscriptions in the U.K., Germany, and Japan for some time, but it seems that the company is finally ready to begin positioning Prime Video as a premium service in its own right, as opposed to yet another benefit of Prime. Related: Amazon Prime without a yearly commitment is now a reality if you’re a Sprint customer While Netflix may be the most deeply entrenched streaming service, Amazon original content likeThe Man in the High Castle, Mozart in the Jungle, and Transparent, combined with content not available on Netflix — such as Downton Abbey and Mr. Robot  — has Amazon poised to grab some of its market share, and this new pricing certainly won’t hurt either. Also watch: The Best Movies on Netflix Streaming Now (April 2016) Please enable Javascript to watch this video

Making Therapy Work for You: Have Your Feelings Without Your Feelings Having You

I’ve noticed that most people come in to therapy with some preconception about what to do with their feelings in session: Some believe that venting will help them to heal, others feel that it will be most helpful to remain distanced from their feelings so that they can analyze them. They’re both right. And they’re both wrong. It’s the use of both of these modes in alternation that’s most helpful — though I think that there are better ways to describe them than “venting” and “analyzing.”

We need to value our feelings and use them rather than trying to get rid of them through either venting or analyzing. I’ve found that the best way to do this is to let feelings rise into consciousness, fully experience them, contain them and learn from them, and then decide what to do about them. This means expressing feelings without reacting to them impulsively, and then making conscious decisions about how to live based on what we learn from them.

This whole process could take minutes or years. Some feelings take a long time to fully rise into conscious, and to be fully experienced and fully understood. Others emerge quickly.

This brings up a common misconception about the best way to handle feelings. Many people confuse repression with suppression: Repression is an unconscious way of avoiding disturbing feelings. Suppression, on the other hand, is a healthier tactic in which we make a conscious decision not to focus on something that we already understand. Once you have some sense of why you worry needlessly about something, for instance, it makes perfect sense to delay worrying about that issue, quarantining it until Saturday morning from 10:15 until 10:40 if you need to. It’s not necessarily bad to put a feeling aside if you already understand what you have to learn from it.

One reason that it’s important to carefully explore feelings as they occur in the session is that we often have layers of feeling, and the obvious layer may not be the most significant one: anxiety may sit on top of anger or sadness, and anger may easily cover fear.

Anne, for instance, was furious that her cousin Sandra cancelled her trip to visit her. She knew that Sandra had some serious problems that made it almost impossible to visit, so she could try to be reasonable about it and avoid the feeling rather than lambasting someone who really didn’t deserve it. But she also knew that she tended to become resentful or explode later when she did that. Instead she decided to sit with the feeling, describe it, hold it, see how it felt in her body, and notice the feelings of sadness and fear underneath. She eventually realized that she was very afraid of being alone and forgotten, an old feeling that had little to do with her cousin, and much to do with her past and the way she treated herself. She decided that she needed to make an effort to nurture her relationships with people who had made themselves available, but with whom she hadn’t followed through. And that she needed to thoughtfully and more regularly “visit” her own feelings rather than ignoring them or reacting to them impulsively. This was just one in a series of episodes in which she learned to regulate her affect, to have her feelings without her feelings having her.

Some people have difficulty accessing feeling at all. If this is the case for you, you’ll need to slow down and focus. Focus on the body to see what you can learn from it. Focus on any seemingly insignificant reactions you have toward your therapist. Focus on the incidents during your week in which you felt the greatest degree of happiness or sadness. It’s like slowing down a video to watch the details in slow motion. Or to use an auditory metaphor instead, it’s like a radio signal that’s very faint. You’ll need clear everything else away and listen carefully at first. As you come to identify and recognize the signals, they’ll eventually be easier to hear.

One sure way to sabotage the effectiveness of your therapy is to engage in avoidant and addictive behavior — behavior that allows you to temporarily evade disturbing feelings. If you start to feel something in your session, but then drown it in a binge of drinking, eating or shopping, you won’t get as much from the process. This is not to say that you have to wait to get over your addiction before you begin therapy, but that you may need to focus on the addiction in the early part of your process.

Emotions have a communicative aspect to them — they want something to be witnessed. I’m stressing your response to your own emotions here, but I also want to be clear that there is no substitute for having your emotions seen and empathically received by someone else — in this case your therapist. But they can’t do that if you don’t let them see what you’re going through.

Finally, as we improve our relationship with our difficult feelings, we also find that we can savor the pleasurable ones more easily. And that makes the process of psychotherapy even more worthwhile.

This is the third post in a series about how clients can most effectively use their time in psychotherapy. For an introduction see my post 10 Tips to Make Therapy Work for You, and for a complete description of 10 these tools see my book: I’m Working On It In Therapy.

I’ll be posting next week about how to use the therapeutic relationship. Click “Become a Fan” at the top of this post if you want to make sure you don’t miss it.

10 Tools to Help You Give Without Getting Drained

In our society, where we have a tendency to constantly be in a state of “go go go” it can be a real challenge to find the energy to give anymore without feeling stressed, tired, exhausted and just flat out, well, drained.

Maybe it’s after a long day of work and you find yourself getting a call from a family member with another problem and you just don’t have the energy to deal with it. Or maybe it’s struggling to have patience with that one difficult customer.

Regardless of the exact scenario, these situations can all be really challenging. If we don’t take time out of our day to really tune into ourselves and give ourselves some good ol’ self-care, we can find ourselves in this constant place of being drained and stressed out. And frankly, that’s not good for you or anyone around you.

So here are 10 simple tools that can help you give without feeling drained:

1. Spend time in nature. Go out and soak up some sun, breathe in the fresh air, walk barefoot in the grass, and marvel in the blissful sound of birds chirping.

2. Exercise! When we strengthen our bodies, we also strengthen our entire being. So go for a run, do some yoga, or hit up the gym.

3. Eat well. Are you finding yourself always in a hurry and rushing over to McDonald’s? Well if you really want to replenish yourself so you’re not drained and stressed out all the time, then find some alternative foods to eat that are much nutritious for you. Eat some fruit and veggies. Have a salad. Maybe even try out going paleo, vegan or gluten free. Find food that energizes you and makes you feel like you’re at your optimal health.

4. Get enough sleep. One of the most important factors of our mental health and overall well-being is the amount and quality of sleep we get each night. After all, our brains can’t function optimally if we don’t give it a chance to rest! The general rule of thumb is to shoot for somewhere between 7 to 9 hours each night, depending on what your body needs.

5. Support yourself. We can’t really support others, nor can we fully receive support from others, if we don’t support ourselves. So support yourself in the work you do by praising yourself for a job well done, rather than be super critical about it not being “good enough.” Support yourself in relationships by being in relationships with people who are kind, loyal, and respectful of you.

6. Meditate — often. Enough said.

7. Breathe! When we’re stressed and worn out, we habitually forget to breathe. So bring everything back to the breath and do it often! Take deep breaths and then let it all out.

8. Do things that light you up. Be sure that you’re taking time each week (or even day) to do things that you really truly enjoy doing. Do what you feel passionate about. Take time to write, take photos, grow a garden, take your dog for a walk, dance… do whatever helps bring more fun to your life and energizes you.

9. Bring passion into what you do. While it is important to do things that you already feel passionate about, it’s also important to put forth the effort to bring passion into what you do already. Bring passion into regular exercise routine, bring passion into your not-quite-dream-job, and bring passion into your new diet. When we bring passion into all aspects of our life, we can then find ourselves much happier — which supplies us with plenty of joy and love to share with others.

10. Give yourself some alone time. While it can be easy with our busy lives to always be socializing and doing things with others, it is also important to give yourself some “me” time to do whatever with yourself. Take some time to yourself to journal, read, or reflect on your day. Take some time to go someplace by yourself so you have space to deal completely with your own thoughts, emotions, and overall experience. Allow yourself to take some moments to stop and look within — for it is within that our endless supply of love dwells.

How to Maximize Your Swim Wardrobe Without Spending a Dime

Have you looked through your swimsuits from last year and realized that you’re missing some tops and bottoms of your bikinis? Hey, it happens. That’s when mixing tops and bottoms from different suits comes in, but as you know from missing prints in other genres, it takes some skill.

We spoke to Gabby Sabharwal, designer of swimwear brand Giejo, who knows a thing or two about print mixing when it comes to swimwear. Her line was born out of a fruitless search for a swimsuit that she says “fit my personal style of mixing and matching print, textures, and silhouettes.” To help in the styling process, she shared with us her tips on swimwear print mixing, just in time for summer:

What Tabloid Headlines Would Look Like Without The Sexism

Magazine tabloids tend to treat women like zoo animals instead of people.

Created by college students Erin Valentine and Ashley McGetrick, a new project called “Breaking News: Deconstructing Entertainment Journalism” highlights the rampant sexism in entertainment media by revealing what headlines would look like if tabloids treated female celebrities like real people.

kourtney

The two seniors at Elon University created the project for their capstone course on women and gender in the media.

“By translating these headlines to be more feminist-friendly, we hoped to call out sexist and unequal cultural influences, especially of celebrities, in the media,” Valentine told The Huffington Post. “Sensationalized tabloid media preys on the female body and an idealized version of ‘womanhood.'”

Headlines involving female celebrities are notorious for objectifying women, Valentine said. From shaming women who go makeup-free to criticizing women for wearing gym clothes, tabloids subject women to a lot of sexism that men rarely experience.

“Whether in line at the grocery store, scrolling through Facebook or flipping through television channels, it is hard to miss headlines worshiping, critiquing or questioning the physiques and lifestyles of female public figures,” Valentine said. “While seemingly harmless, these hyped up headlines attack more than just the people pictured.”

It’s not only the headlines that are implicitly sexist, but the stories written about these female celebrities. Instead of writing about how hard-working Blake Lively is when she attends dozens of events in one day, stories are written about how many outfits she wore.

Valentine noted that consumers do have an impact on these headlines. “They should also acknowledge that they have the power to push back as viewers and as the audience to encourage more feminist-friendly entertainment journalism,” she said.

Check out some of Valentine’s and McGetrick’s feminist-friendly headlines below.

On Mother’s Day, Remembering Mothers Without Living Children

Mother’s Day evokes bittersweet emotions in bereaved mothers everywhere. The pain of loss may be especially poignant for mothers without living children. Memories of loss transposed onto a world awash in flowers and greeting cards leaves women reeling. Too often, their experience of motherhood is largely unacknowledged by society. Taking place in May, a month that pulses with such tremulous beauty in long-awaited spring, Mother’s Day can threaten to break the best of us.

Says Toni Brabec, whose only baby daughter Olivia died in 2013:

Before, I saw Mother’s Day like most people do. A special day to honor our mothers… [I]’d pick out cards, a small gift… Now on Mother’s Day, I would rather stay in or just have a small gathering… [F]or me, who has no evidence of children other than the photos in my house, I am overlooked and/or it is assumed I am not a mother at all… it is difficult because in my heart, I know I am a mother. But the world doesn’t always see it like that.

This is what loving family and friends can consider doing to help support mothers without living children coping with loss.

1. Do acknowledge and affirm her standing as mother.
You can absolutely include bereaved mothers in Mother’s Day events. This may feel initially awkward, but it truly is both appropriate and helpful. The tone of inclusion may feel a bit more subdued, but the mother without living children should have her heroic struggle to mourn, remember, and find meaning marked. She will decline if she is not comfortable, but she will appreciate the invitation.

2. Do send a card.
It is comforting to receive an acknowledgement in the mail regarding loss. These cards are evidence of the existence of babies gone too soon, and these apparently slight things carry precious love to shore up mothers mourning and remembering.

3. Don’t try to talk her out of grief.
Resist the impulse to try to make her feel better. Instead, let her miss her child. Most expressions of grief that tow with them an undercurrent of the “at least,” will only inadvertently push the bereaved away.

4. Do ask her questions about her loss/her birth/her stillbirth.
Depending upon your relationship to the bereaved, dialogue can be helpful. It promotes the integration of grief and complex healing. Loss, when processed, can reveal phenomenally painful truths about being alive. However, the other side of the pain is the recognition of the beauty that is also inherent in living. Bereaved mothers don’t take much for granted. They can teach a great deal in this regard.

5. Do take care to acknowledge the loss of their baby.
If you see a Facebook post pertaining to loss, the mother is reaching out. Go ahead and comment — add your voice to the supportive community. You may not know what to say, but “I am thinking of you,” is a powerful statement.

Part of the isolation born of perinatal loss is the lack of shared memories. It is for this reason that efforts to invite the sharing of memories have great import. The bereaved mother is working to find her place in a whole new world. It is a lonely journey and she does appreciate the company.

Live Without Pain: A New Theory on What’s Wrong With You and How to Fix It.

This is the US version, UK version also available. Do you have an illness or injury that just won’t heal? Do you suffer from unexplained aches, pains, stiffness, or fatigue that won’t go away, no matter what you try? The culprit may literally be right under your nose or hanging around your neck. Simon King explains his theory, based on careful observation, that many necklaces, rings, watches, piercings, and dental work affect your sensory nervous system and muscle reflexes – whether you can feel anything happening or not! Based on a well-known but under-appreciated mechanism called ‘Proprioception,’ Live without Pain reveals how many common items activate proprioceptive mechanisms which leave you vulnerable to pain, and how you can remedy these without drugs, surgery or exercises. It offers individuals and health practitioners alike simple solutions that build health; sometimes resolving even long-term health issues in the process. Can artists Procreate Without Going Bankrupt?

I’m a member of two different Facebook groups that have frequent postings; one of them is a group for moms, many of whom also happen to be artists. The other one is a forum for classical singers, a few of whom happen to be parents. There isn’t a lot of crossover topics between the two groups — but this week, unrelated to one another, I read a post on my classical singer group asking whether people who had kids felt that it affected their careers as singers, and another post on my mom’s page asking whether any artists that were also parents were managing to keep their artistic careers going while still staying afloat financially. Where the crossover between these two queries occurred was mostly in the comments section, where people who were artists and parents explained how they managed to keep from moving their families into cardboard boxes, and what sacrifices they had made in order to add children to their lives. Everyone said that whatever sacrifices they had made were worth it, and they wouldn’t change a thing. But almost all of the commenters with kids mentioned that either they or their spouses had moved into some sort of academia or other work in order to pay the bills and remain at least somewhat financially stable. The number of people who had moved in different directions than their original artistic intentions was almost everybody. Most people said they were content with where their choices had led them, but it lead my mom’s group to start a discussion about why it’s next to impossible to be an artist — and especially a couple in which both people are artists and self employed — and make a go of having a family.

For opera singing parents, the challenges are quite extraordinary. Because not only are there all the challenges of being a self-employed artist, whose income is sporadic and difficult to predict, and who has no health or retirement benefits from their job, but we must factor in the concern that our jobs require constant travel, which makes adding a child into the mix pretty insane. Not only do we have to arrange extra plane tickets and different accommodations than may be provided by the company for whom we are working — usually at our own expense — but we have to arrange childcare in a strange place, ahead of time, without even having a chance to meet with the candidates. So a mother must bring her child with her to a strange place, and the very next day leave them with a strange person while they go to rehearsal. Or we leave our child with someone back home for a long period of time. The fees of opera singers have notoriously dwindled in recent years, and the competition has made jobs less available and less frequent. After a singer pays a coach to help them learn their role, and lives in a strange city for several weeks without pay, they then get a lump sum for their performances, of which 10-20 percent gets paid to an agent, and another 15-30 percent should be set aside for taxes. After deducting the costs of monthly health insurance (probably at least $ 700-1000 per month for the singer and child) and any retirement that could be set aside (ha ha — we wish) that doesn’t leave the singer a lot to work with. And I’m not only talking about struggling singers, I’m talking about singers who sing in the major opera houses around the world. And if you’re adding onto that the extra expense of travel, accommodations and possibly childcare, you are left wondering why you bothered to leave your house in the first place. And while other types of artists have different challenges, almost all of them face rising expenses and dwindling profits, and share similar concerns to we opera singing parents.

Which leads me to the question; should artists even bother to procreate? Is it fair to our children that we lead such financially itinerant lifestyles? If someone wants to have a family, shouldn’t they just do the responsible thing and get a “real” job?

The problem with this line of questioning (which so many artists face from friends, family and strangers sitting next to us on airplanes and in coffee shops on a daily basis) is that it really does question whether being an artist is of value to a society at all. Because if having children is so impossible for someone who works as an artist — and I’m not even talking about a struggling “wannabe” artist, but someone who actually makes a living as one — then it suggests that it is not a career worth being compensated for, but merely an avocation for a young and untethered person who doesn’t mind living la vie boheme, using old chairs for firewood and eating sardine sandwiches.

I bring this up because there are other countries who consider these problems. There are countries who provide health care and education to all their citizens (Sweden, Denmark, Norway — most of Europe actually), who provide paid maternity leave to expecting mothers (and fathers) even if their jobs don’t (Canada), who give stipends to every family for each child they have (Germany), and who even have government sponsored excellent childcare as well as insurance for artists who are between jobs (France). Many of these countries also have state sponsored arts funding, coincidentally. So artists are paid pretty well, and don’t have to go around worrying all the time about how they are going to make ends meet. Artists are acknowledged as being participating, contributing members of society, and their worth isn’t taken for granted. Yes, the citizens of these countries also pay higher taxes — but not that much higher considering all the benefits they are offered.

So we’re back to the same question I ask so often in my blog posts — why doesn’t America value artists more and allow for them to continue to contribute without constantly worrying about financial collapse? I’m not talking about handouts — I’m talking about extensive tax breaks for childcare, and access to truly affordable health care, and community support to the organizations that create art so that they can pay artists fair wages. I’m talking about wage earning that is commensurate with education, and acknowledgement that arts organizations enrich communities both fiscally and socially.

Coming full circle back to my Facebook forums and where they intersect — parents all over this country are struggling to make ends meet because of things like childcare and healthcare. Artists all over this country are struggling because of lack of income, lack of jobs and lack of government support. In a way, artists are prepared to make excellent parents because they are used to finding creative solutions to financial hurdles, something most parents have to do many times in their child’s lives, regardless of their occupation. But this isn’t the only thing that can make artists great parents. Artistic parents can’t help but encourage artistically minded children, whether that means artists or merely arts supporters. And we desperately need more people who believe that creativity is a vital arm to our society. So we need artists to keep procreating so we can make a new generation of people who are willing to think creatively and who think of artists as necessary members of their community.

So I say to all artists; go forth and procreate. You are creative. You will figure out a way around the financial and logistical hurdles which you will encounter. And you will hopefully become part of the village so essential to other artists in your community also raising families.

And also; nothing inspires creativity quite like trying to have a conversation with a toddler.

Story without End

Marcus recently left a senior executive position and is adjusting to his new life as what a friend has labeled him: a Renaissance man. During this period of adjustment from profit- and process-driven, almost manic, activity to a more leisurely pace, he is researching many interests to keep his brain active in order to maintain his sanity. Among other things, he is traveling extensively, with his camera, finding and enjoying many different experiences. He is based in downtown Chicago and from there stays busy by working for some local charities and remains in touch with the world of business through the almost compulsory consultancy work expected from retired executives. This aspect of his life is as near as he ever is likely to get to the state of normal. His friends keep reminding him about the need to become grounded, a condition he never wants to be in full time. He finds travel and writing pleasurable ways to pass the time, but do they feed the inner man? As a financially independent and self-labeled man of the world, he thinks not. He has therefore set out on a quest to see if true love exists and if there is a soul mate out there just for him. He has been close to true love a few times, but so far he has not experienced the really deep emotional connection with another person that he believes exists. He has yet to see it or find it, which is why he has set out on a mission to see if he can find real deep, true love. To record his adventures and emotions, he decided to write three books to help him find what he is looking for. The first book, 21 Days to Love, has been published. It explains the beginning of his mission, which started with an intense and powerful love affair with Tina. That relationship ended, and shortly afterward he met Anastasia. They went on a twenty-one day journey and fell in love with each other a little, or maybe a lot. This second book details his confusion at deciding who he is and where he is going, as reflected in the title-Story With

Healthy Belly without Giving Up the Good Foods

You’d love to have a flat belly for the party tonight, but thanks to one too many sodas or that basket of tortilla chips, zipping your pants is a real struggle. Abdominal bloating not only looks bad but can also cause physical discomfort. The good news? Experts say stomach bloating is a condition you can avoid pretty easily.   Unless your stomach bloating is caused by a medical condition such as liver or heart disease, the only real cause is intestinal gas – not “water weight.”   It is a myth that bloating in the stomach is from fluid accumulation in healthy adults, because the abdomen is not a place where fluids accumulate first,” Jensen says. “Instead, you would see it in your feet or ankles as long as you are upright.

How To Decorate A Room Without Putting Everything In Front Of The TV

We’re creatures of habit, and there are few times this has proven truer than when trying to incorporate a TV into our decor. It almost always takes center stage. But just because the majority of people choose to make the boob tube the focal point of a room — 52 percent of homeowners admitted to Houzz that they have televisions in their bedroom— doesn’t mean you have to go with the crowd.

Next time you go to set up a room (or spontaneously feel the urge to move around some furniture), try taking a TV-free approach instead. Not sure how to do that? These focal point alternatives are here to help. And, as an added bonus, they’re pretty much guaranteed to be loads better than some terrible reality show blasting in the background.

A World Without Cancer and AIDS

A World Without Cancer and AIDS

Common sense dictates that there are only two major causes of human diseases: parasites and man-made chemicals. If we could eliminate these two causes, our body could, by itself, eliminate any diseases for good. The use of man-made chemicals, like antibiotics, in eliminating parasites does not accomplish this task.Man-made chemicals accumulate in the body causing long-term side-effects. Therefore, there is a need to avoid any form of man-made chemical treatments in favor of other alternative approaches. Before going any further, one must understand that the human body is fully equipped with built-in mechanisms to protect itself from parasitic infections and chemical imbalance, i.e. auto-immune system and homeostasis. The immune system is a complex defense mechanism which protects us from any parasitic infection, whether viral, bacterial, pathogenic, etc. Under optimal conditions, the immune system must be able to repel all viral and microbial attacks, or if not, will eventually learn to repel them in time.Homeostasis is the body’s self-regulating process which maintains chemical balance, among others, to maintain stability while dynamically adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. The human body is also capable of self-regeneration to some degree, e.g. wound healing. This implies that wherever the wound is located, i.e. injured organs and tissues, it can be repaired through cellular regeneration. It can do so with higher efficiency when the body could concentrate more on the healing rather than on fighting off the infections or neutralizing bad chemicals. This is always the case because the human body’s ability to serve itself is directly limited to the amount of energy it can expend.Indeed, the human body is complete in and of itself, and should have the ability to survive indefinitely in a perfect environment. With good nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate rest, we are assured of longer lifespans such as those biblical characters. However, with phys

Talking About the Future With Your Significant Other (Without Ruining Everything)

Let’s just get this out of the way: This post will not tell you how to talk about the future of your relationship without ruining everything. What it will do, however, is walk you through a few ways I have almost ruined everything and why I continue to insist on almost ruining everything when I talk about the future with my long-term boyfriend, Josh.

People go bonkers about this. Perfectly reasonable humans turn into walking rom-com tropes when it comes to the future of their relationships. The non-married, long-term couples I know tend to fall on a spectrum:

At one extreme, there are those who are obsessed with their future plans. They have timelines. They have rings and baby names and curtains and grave plots picked out. They have built their Tunnel of Love and they are just so excited to live in it forever you guys and tell you all about it… whether you like it or not.

At the other end of the spectrum are the couples that turn into mob witnesses when asked about their future plans. Are they thinking of getting married? They can’t recall. Do they want kids? No comment. They haven’t thought about it. They’re playing it by ear. They’re seeing where things go. They’re perfectly happy right now, and that’s good enough for them, alright, Mom and Dad?! Jesus…

And where does my relationship fall on this spectrum?

I live in a Tunnel of Love with a mob witness.

I’ve always been a planner. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that I’ve always been a dreamer. My idle mind is constantly concocting elaborate fantasies about all the things I really want to — or even just think in passing it might be cool to — do with my life. I fantasize about having a beautiful apartment. I fantasize about winning a Tony. I fantasize about getting married and having kids. I fantasize about being on Chopped. I fantasize about traveling and working abroad. I fantasize about quitting jobs dramatically and telling off bosses and stupid coworkers. I am very rarely, if ever, thinking about tonight or tomorrow. Or even next month. I tend to be thinking one-three years in advance most of the time. That’s my default mind-wandering horizon.

My boyfriend Josh is the opposite. Concrete plans for the weekend elude him, let alone plans for going home for Christmas, getting our own place next year, the possibility of living anywhere other than New York or having a family ever. It’s not right now, so it’s not taking up space in his brain. Dinner? Yeah, we can talk about dinner.

I envy him in a lot of ways. This kind of ever-presence is a brand of Zen I am incapable of achieving. He can be Here and Now. That’s a powerful paradigm, and one that probably grants him a good deal more mental peace than I have. Because while I’m scheming and planning so far in the future that I cannot possibly anticipate the outcome, I am also worrying and stressing and gnashing-of-teething about all the uncertainty– the uncertainty I have created. In most cases, it’s not helpful. But it does modify how I conduct myself in the present.

For example, knowing we are both theater artists (read: chronically impoverished) in different capacities, I try to cultivate additional revenue streams outside of theater. I am acutely conscious of how much more money I’m making than the year before and how much I can save in anticipation of our next security deposit or to start a Roth IRA or to buy health insurance. Right now, we’re getting by, which means two things: Josh isn’t stressing because we’re actually getting by, and I am stressing because we’re only getting by! Same reality, different reactions.

Over the years, my attempts to engage Josh in conversations about our future have mostly been lessons of what not to do. Don’t assume we’re on the same page. Don’t assume we’re not on the same page. Don’t expect him to initiate a conversation, but give him a chance to have a conversation before jumping down his throat. I’ve gone into a tailspin more than a few times in my paranoia that we must not actually be as happy as we seem because we can’t have functional conversations about when we might (hypothetically) want to get married(?) someday. We’ve spent long, frustrating hours talking about how we talk about the future. I’ve learned a lot about how to talk to him to find out how he really feels, and he’s learned a lot about what I need to hear him share to avoid existential meltdown.

Knowing that he wasn’t building a little Tunnel of Love felt — and at times still feels — so personal. He couldn’t possibly be as serious about us as I am! Look at all the work I’ve (imagined I’ve) done! But over time, over late-night Skype sessions and meandering text threads and good, old fashioned hashing it out with the door closed, I came to an ah-ha moment: realizing (and reminding myself) that simply because we look at the future from different angles doesn’t mean that we aren’t looking at the same future.

Josh is serious — in a language that is hard for me to understand. Same reality, different reactions. I’ve had relationships tank as we’ve both been busily engaged in constructing an elaborate Tunnel of Love… only to find that our relationship couldn’t fill the vast space we’d carved out for our life together. We came up short of our blueprints. Having two architects does not automatically ensure success.

No, he doesn’t daydream on the subway the way I do. He doesn’t have many full-term ideas about what the future looks like. But he’s sure that it’s with me, and that’s the most important plan of all.

‘Ring Cam’ Lets You Record A Marriage Proposal Without Lifting A Finger

In an age when marriage proposals frequently go viral, there’s a lot of pressure to capture the big moment in just the right way.

But what if you don’t have a four-man camera crew or Hollywood-worthy film editing skills? That’s where Ring Cam comes in.

The Ring Cam, which was launched in October 2013, is basically a ring box with a tiny camera inside. So when it’s time to pop the question, the bride- or groom-to-be’s reaction is instantly captured.

ring cam

Ring Cam is the brainchild of four college students from Michigan. One of its creators, Scott Brandonisio, sat down with Good Morning America to discuss the perks of the new device.

“Only the person proposing actually knows its there,” he explained. “So you’re able to capture that genuine element of surprise.”

Indeed, most viral proposal videos involve elaborate schemes in which camera men are clearly visible. As you can see from Ring Cam’s past proposals, the shocked reactions are the best part of the videos.

The gadget can be purchased for $ 149.00 to $ 249.00 from the company’s website, or you can rent the box for just $ 99.

Be sure to watch the Good Morning America segment above for more info.

5 Realistic Ways to DIY Your Wedding Without Going Into the Red

It’s no secret that wedding planning can be a rabbit hole to an empty bank account if you allow yourself to get too carried away. That’s why more brides (and even their supportive grooms) are turning to do-it-yourself projects as a way to cut costs and create a completely customized aesthetic. But it’s easy to underestimate the amount of work (and precious time) it takes to achieve a certain look. Before taking the DIY plunge, it’s important to establish a creative vision for your big day. From there, you can then separate the details into “to DIY” or “not to DIY” categories before embarking on a craft supply spending spree, only to realize you could have saved money by renting or hiring someone to execute certain elements.

For those of us who aren’t queens of crafting (let’s be honest, that’s most of us) or don’t have bottomless budgets, making wedding décor can be a daunting task. Here are five simple elements you can DIY that are (practically) foolproof and won’t break the bank:

1. Centerpieces and Table Décor. Collect various vessels of different sizes, shapes, colors and heights such as vintage bottles, teacups and drinking glasses from your cupboard. Group them in interesting ways, placing anywhere from three to seven in the middle of the table, and fill them with different florals, feathers, berries, pinecones and even pods, acorns or sticks collected from your yard. For example, one table might have a vintage brass pot with a succulent planted inside, a low ceramic vase can hold large bright blooms, while a delicate glass beaker with long ethereal greenery adds a lush feel. One of our favorite couples collected miscellaneous vessels for months, saving bottles from grocery items, perusing flea markets and dusting off family heirlooms. They grouped them at each table with florals of different heights and shapes hand-cut from their garden in addition to loose ones from the florist. The result: a boho-chic menagerie that delighted guests and made for great table conversation.

2. Favors. Invite guests to take one of your handmade table setting arrangements with them at the end of the reception. If you want something more uniform, baked goods in brown paper bags tied with baker’s twine and a tag have a homemade feel. One of our couples knew there would be excess dessert at their wedding, so they placed brown paper boxes near the table towards the end of the night, and invited guests to take treats to go, sealed with a custom sticker ordered inexpensively online. Favors don’t have to be extravagant, just thoughtful.

3. Programs. You don’t have to be a graphic designer to make eye-popping programs. While you may want to get some design inspiration from an Etsy vendor, or a website like Wedding Paper Divas, it’s easy to add that little something extra to your printed pieces. One of our couples glued one side of their card-stock program to large popsicle sticks for instant fans — perfect for their orchard wedding in the heat. They had their program file printed, and painted the sticks for added pizzazz.

4. Photo Booth Props. Lots of couples are opting for photo booths to capture images of their guests on their special day. The best part of the photo booth is, of course, the props! We’ve found it’s so simple to cut out bow ties, mustaches and lips from funky patterned paper and attach to striped paper straws. Collect old hats from friends, family or thrift stores along with boas and glasses. You can also make crowns out of paper, and embellish them with rhinestones, ribbon or feathers from your local crafts store. Put all your props in a basket with a hand-drawn sign or chalkboard.

5. Cake Topper. Forgo the porcelain bride and groom figurines. Think about what is special to you as a couple. If you met at a baseball game, that ball you caught, causing you to fall into your destiny (literally), might make the perfect topper. Fresh flowers from the rose garden you so lovingly tended together, or fresh pine branches from the spot he proposed are all easy, inexpensive and meaningful ways to add that finishing touch to your cake. Some of our favorite cake toppers have included fresh cut greenery with a few well-placed blooms on a plain white cake and a bird’s egg found outdoors in a nest, embellished with the couple’s name and a few craft feathers.

Remember, your guests are there for you — not to be wowed by an over-the-top affair. Above all, have fun and know that all these little things add up to one special day that signifies the beginning of your new life with the one you love the most.

30 Ways To Do The Things You Love Without Your Smartphone

In our tech-obsessed culture, our smartphones seem to be as essential as our wallets when we’re heading out the door — and when we accidentally leave home without ours, panic ensues.

But what if we started doing it on purpose?

Before there were gadgets stocked with newsfeeds, emails and text messages, there were these activities. Next time you’re looking something to do — device free — take a look at the list below.

1. Paint or color something.
painting
You wouldn’t want your watercolors to splatter your screen, right? Before there was the Draw Something app, there was a coloring book and a canvas — and that activity you did daily as a kid may help ease stress and anxiety as an adult.

2. Take a nap without using your phone as an alarm.
Studies have shown that stashing your phone under the pillow can disrupt your sleep, anyway.

3. Go for an iPod-free run.
Let nature be your soundtrack this time.

4. Log some one-on-one time with your pet over the ones on YouTube.
golden retriever
As addicting as funny cat videos are, there are more benefits to hanging with your real-life pets. A recent study found that 20 percent of pet owners would give up cuddling with their pets over giving up their smartphones (woof!). Spend an afternoon with your furry friend — research has proven that owning a pet can significantly lower your stress.

5. Take a break from binge-watching Netflix and head to a matinee movie or play instead.

6. Put pen to paper.
Studies have shown that writing down what you’re grateful for has a positive impact on overall happiness and the physical act of writing can even help you learn better. Instead of typing a text message on a mini keyboard, try it the old fashioned way.

7. Go on a hike and use a paper map to help you find your way.

8. Perfect your Baked Alaska with a recipe from an actual cookbook.

9. Go to dinner with your friends.
Food is meant to be enjoyed, not just Instagrammed. Next time you go out to dinner with your friends, try the phone stacking game. The first to pick up their phone during the meal also picks up the tab.

10. Read an actual newspaper.

11. Play some brain games on paper.
Exercise your mind with some sudoko or a crossword puzzle — it may even make you more productive and boost your creativity.

12. Get lost in a a real book instead of a Kindle.
reading book
Reading has numerous brain benefits. Getting wrapped up in a good story can reduce stress, may help you sleep better and even may make you more empathetic.

13. Flip through a regular magazine (not one on Flipboard).

14. Go for a drive with no particular destination or GPS device.

15. Thumb through old photo albums.
And no, not the albums you have on Facebook. Studies have found that a little nostalgia can actually be a good thing. Reflecting on the past can boost your optimism for the future because it raises your self-esteem, according to a Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin study.

16. Indulge in a little mindfulness meditation.
meditation
Rather than zoning out by tuning into your phone, go deeper with a meditation session. As “Nightline” anchor Dan Harris says, meditation is “a bicep curl for your brain.” Meditating for just a little bit each day can ease emotional stress and even strengthen your immune system.

17. Capture photos or a video using a real camera.

18. Pick up an instrument.
By stepping away from the Rock Band and grabbing a real guitar, you could be doing wonders for your wellness. Learning to play an instrument can reduce stress, is linked to better sound processing and helps keep your memory sharp. Don’t know how to play one? Good news: it’s never too late to learn.

19. Play tourist for the day in your own city using a real guidebook.

20. Grab a drink with an old friend from college.
drinks with friends
Make it a point to catch up in-person with those who you’ve fallen out of touch with — it’ll give a whole new meaning to the word “FaceTime.”

21. Watch a sunrise or a sunset without trying to capture it.

22. Take a day trip to a town close to you, sans Google maps.

23. Have a bonding day with your kids or parents.
Forget Skype for a day. Our relationships are valuable and it’s important to strengthen them away from our screens. According to research published in the Journal of Socio-Economics, people’s social connections are worth $ 131,232 a year in terms of life satisfaction.

24. Experience Spotify in real life by going to a concert.

25. Make a scrapbook.
All those pictures you do take on your smartphone have to go somewhere besides Instagram, right?

26. Organize your real desktop.
organized desk
Ultra-organized people know the value of a clean work station. And since those ever-tidy individuals tend to be optimistic, have a can-do attitude and are always prepared, perhaps it’s time to stash the phone for a little while and get to sorting.

27. Brush up on your math skills.
Have your brain be your tip calculator the next time you go to dinner.

28. Forgo Google translator and learn a few new phrases in another language.

29. Star gaze.
starry sky
Since the introduction of stargazing apps, many of us seem to forget that we can observe the stars without using our phones to identify the constellations. Pick a quiet night to just lie underneath the sky and pick out the star patterns you remember from high school.

30. Put together a jigsaw puzzle instead of playing Bejeweled.

Bodies Without Borders: Migrating Discourses of Embodiment

Bodies Without Borders: Migrating Discourses of Embodiment

Globalization is often thought of as an abstract process that happens “out there” in the world. But people are ultimately the driving force of global change, and people have human bodies that are absent in current conversations about globalization. The original scholarly research and first-person accounts of embodiment in this volume explore the role of bodies in the flows of people, money, commodities, and ideas across borders. From Zumba fitness classes to martial arts to fashion blogs and the meanings of tattooing, the contributors examine migrating body practices and ideals that stretch across national boundaries.
