Work collaboration unicorn Notion is blocked in China

Work collaboration unicorn Notion is blocked in ChinaNotion, the fast-growing work collaboration tool that recently hit a $ 2 billion valuation, said on Twitter Monday that its service is blocked in China. The productivity app has attracted waves of startups and tech workers around the world — including those in China — to adopt its all-in-one platform that blends notes, wikis, to-dos, and team collaboration. Notion said it is “monitoring the situation and will continue to post updates,” but the timing of the ban noticeably coincides with China’s annual parliament meeting, which began last week after a two-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Examining a ‘Safe and Just Return to Work’

SAFETY FIRST: As government officials and executives continue to debate when, how and under what conditions businesses should reopen, the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health has released a report highlighting the need for caution.
The organization’s view is that the U.S. is far from being ready to open for business without putting workers and entire communities at “grave risk of illness and death.” The National COSH’s stance is that only the most essential businesses should be open as long as safety measures are not only in place, but also monitored and enforced.
An assortment of authorities — academics, certified industrial hygienists, attorneys, physicians and leaders of nonprofits and NGOs — were recruited to contribute to the new report. “A Safe and Just Return to Work” offers safety guidelines, the need for workers’ input and fair compensation for sick, injured and at-risk workers.
Keeping workers healthy is increasingly a topic of conversation and concern as more states ease stay at home restrictions and business owners and companies anticipate reopening their stores, operations and offices. Companies such as Walmart, Target, Amazon, FedEx and others considered essential and already opened, and their respective employees, have also been diving into this matter. A one-day walkout strike

Eat, Watch, Wander and Work Out at the New London Hotspots

LONDON — Granted, there isn’t much time in between shows and presentations during the busy days of London Fashion Week. But for the lucky ones with a few hours to spare, here are some nine-to-nine ideas.
Start the day at Apple Butter Café in Seven Dials, Covent Garden, at the newly opened East-meets-West all-day café. It serves up Middle Eastern-inspired dishes such as the Croissant Florentine with beetroot sauce and a signature dessert known as The Apple.
Covent Garden has multiple new offerings across food and fashion. Not to be missed, Dominique Ansel, creator of the famous Cronut and winner of the World’s Best Pastry Chef, has opened a second outpost, Treehouse, at 24 Floral Street. The two-floor space features a French-inspired takeaway boutique bakery and bistro that serves up a selection of pastry-focused sharing plates.
Farther down Floral Street the fashion retailer Jigsaw has launched a new flagship concept while across the road, Glossier has announced that it’s hugely popular pop-up cosmetic play-space that will remain open permanently.
If you’re looking for an afternoon tea spot, or a London specialty, head to King Street in Covent Garden to sample a special afternoon tea by Petersham Nurseries and Cool Earth, a charity that protects the world’s most

Vin + Omi Work With Team GB Athletes on Recycled Sports Clothing

GOOD SPORTS: The British label Vin + Omi has another eco-minded collection in the pipeline. For fall 2020 the designers have allied themselves with Team GB Olympians and are whipping the athletes’ unused clothing and equipment from sponsors into runway-ready punk pieces.
Omi described the fall 2020 show, which takes place at The Savoy hotel on Feb. 14, as its “largest, most recycled” yet. Team GB sailor Hannah Mills and fencer James Honeybone, who walked in Vin + Omi’s spring/summer 2020 show, contributed their unused pieces.
“We utilized every single bit of a fencing kit — from the blades, to the sabre, to the masks. Everything was chucked into” an entire look, said Omi.
Other highlights include a coat that was made by hand from a sail, as well as a jacket sporting all the Team GB sponsors’ logos jumbled together.
“The pieces are designed to be slightly unwearable to show the awkwardness of the sport being bastardized by advertising,” Omi added. “It’s amazing to see how much branding one sport has at one event.”
For 16 years, the London-based designers have been attempting to push the limit of sustainable clothing production and have dressed celebrities including Beyoncé and Michelle Obama. They also work with private

Google Maps helps you find EV chargers that work with your carGoogle Maps can help you find available EV charging stations, but that doesn't mean they're stations you can use — and that might be a problem if you show up at the wrong station with a low battery. Thankfully, Google might help you avoid that slip-up in the future. It recently updated Maps on Android (it's not clear that iOS has this yet) to allow filtering stations by those that your car supports. If you need a CHAdeMO station and don't have an adapter, you'll know just where you can go to recharge.

Carhartt Clothing Men’s B194 DKB Dark Brown Duck Insulated Dungaree Work Pants

Carhartt Clothing Men’s B194 DKB Dark Brown Duck Insulated Dungaree Work Pants

Still wearing those pants to work that aren’t insulated, have rips all over them because they’re made of a lightweight fabric, and don’t fit comfortably? Pardon our French, but what the…Duck are you waiting for? Get a pair of Carhartt Men’s B194 DKB Dark Brown Cotton Duck Insulated Double Knee Dungaree Work Pants. Behind every hardworking man is an equally hardworking pair of work pants. Carhartt pants are designed to make your workday a bit easier to get through. Made of 12-ounce, heavyweight, 100% cotton sandstone duck, these dark brown dungaree can take the proverbial “lickin’ and keep on tickin’.” Cotton sandstone duck is an unbelievably strong fabric that resists tears, abrasions, snags, and basically last years without showing signs of aging. This fabric is micro-sanded to achieve a brushed look and then garment-washed with detergent and softeners to achieve a soft, “broken-in” feel. So while these cotton duck pants are extremely tough, they don’t feel tough against your skin.Have to work outside in the dead of winter even though the meteorologist is suggesting everyone stay inside? With these insulated pants, you’ll scoff at those who are afraid to take on the cold. 100% nylon lining is quilted to mid-weight polyester insulation. This insulation wraps your legs in a layer of constant warmth so you can get your job done while wearing these men’s pants, regardless of how low the temperature goes down. The nylon lining glides easily over your skin and feels smooth and soft.Designed to tackle the most physically demanding jobs, these Carhartt pants feature Chap style double-front panels, reinforced back pockets, and triple-stitched main seams for added durability. Double-front pants give you extra fabric panels in the area that tends to get the most wear and tear. Double knees will last one heck of a long time and have cleanout bottoms, so these dungaree pants are especially good if you have to work with knee pads. If you’ve gotten in the habit of trying to take your boots off with your feet instead of your hands, the leg openings have Cordura kick plates so you can pry those boots off more easily without wearing out your men’s Carhartt pants.Designed to be comfortable, these dark brown work pants sit slightly below the natural waist (so your belly can hang free instead of being strangled by fabric) and are cut with a full seat and thigh. You’ll appreciate the full seat and thigh when you’re trying to bend, reach, or stretch to get your job done. You might be a sentimental kind of guy, but it’s time to get rid of your torn, tired-looking, non-insulated work pants and get a pair of insualted pants you’d be proud to own and wear. The Carhartt Men’s B194 DKB Dark Brown Cotton Duck Insulated Double Knee Work Dungaree Pants are the perfect choice if you want workwear that makes you proud to put it on.Manufactured Sizes:Inseam: 28Waist: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46Inseam: 30, 32Waist: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50Inseam: 34Waist: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42Inseam: 36Waist: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42

I Work With Elders Because I Am Selfish

2015-10-16-1444957294-9615784-IMG_0556.JPG

When I was 21 I left the beach towns of Florida I had always called home, packed up a station wagon and headed to the millennial’s promised land, Brooklyn. Before I left, a friend and mentor recommended that I read Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. This quote by the main character struck me and changed my perspective and eventually my course in life:

“I don’t intend to build in order to have clients; I intend to have clients in order to build.”

I wanted to live my life in this way although I had not yet defined my passion. In Brooklyn I worked in film and learned about life. At 25 I made another move across country and then suffered a loss, which turned me inward and searching again for my calling. I realized my passion was other people’s passions, or what is called vocation, and this lead me to pursue a certification in life coaching and a graduate degree in psychology.

2015-10-16-1445009932-7981817-P1010542.JPG

In my studies I remained passionate about vocation. I was intrigued by my geropsychology class. I thought, “What better way to learn about life than in hindsight?” and assumed working with elders would offer me a perspective which my 20-something years had not yet granted me. I found an elder care community, which was rare in that it offered psychotherapy, and applied to do my clinical hours there. As I began my training I learned that many of the elders I was working with had a diagnosis of dementia. The site I trained at prided themselves on taking elders who have been told by other communities that they could not meet their needs; usually these “needs” were behavioral expressions. So there I was, selfishly thinking I would sit with elders for my hours and hear their stories and learn about ways to get by in this world: which mistakes are to be avoided, which opportunities to be taken. I would be there like a sponge soaking up their stories, tallying the details and using them to help myself and future clients figure out life. I had always been good at figuring things out and I was excited for the possibility of a life hack through being with elders.

2015-10-16-1445010356-1173998-P1010572.JPG

My clients were not what I expected: Very few remembered my name and conversations were often hard to start and even harder to follow. My clients did not come and sit across from me, instead I joined them in their world and their life. Elders were not the founts of knowledge on a life lived perfectly that I had imagined. Many were mad, frustrated, sad and bored; these common human conditions were exacerbated by years and circumstance. As I spent more and more time with this community my pretense started to fall away and, with a curiosity that has been my constant companion, I looked for what was present. I started to see how relationships were developed without being able to remember one’s name or the details of interactions. As one elder put it, “I do not remember you here [pointing at their head], but I know you here [pointing at their heart].”

2015-10-16-1445010750-1591874-IMG_0982.JPG

I began to notice elders who seemed to be more at peace with their life and those who were more fraught with suffering. I started to notice patterns of those who were aging more joyously than others, with less suffering. I noticed that those who rejected the process of aging were suffering more than those that embraced it. The life hack I got was not the one I expected. There is no short cut or easy answer but there is a perspective shift that can help us as we age. Throughout our life we can listen to our inner wisdom and our calling and follow it, we can act in our own rational self-interest and prepare for old age rather than try to avoid it and we can learn to know things not only with our minds but with our hearts and bodies as well.

I work with elders because I am selfish: I want to limit my own suffering in old age, and hopefully others’ along the way. I am open and actively learning from elders and the aging process. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to be around elders to try this perspective on, and learn from elders who age joyously. When we let go of trying to stop aging, that energy can go into being in the moment and appreciating the process.

Oneika Russell Engages the Tropical Body and Caribbean Identity in Her Work

There was the outline of a face and a body with no distinguishable features, but for the eyes. Behind this figure was a city/landscape and the figure seemed to be infused with bright colorful Caribbean foliage/flowers. I was immediately intrigued by the series in which female characters were at times engorged by or hidden behind the common flowers of the Caribbean.

The work in question is part of artist Oneika Russell’s “A Natural History” body of work. This is a series the Jamaican-born artist created mostly while living in Kyoto, Japan, and in the work she sought to represent the experience of being an outsider in a culture that at first seemed very alien to her. Said the artist, “I was trying to understand how to make an image which conveyed what the tropical body and a tropical identity might be or look like.” This fusion of the black body and Caribbean foliage would eventually become an artist’s book printed in 2015. “A Natural History,” thus far, is Oneika Russell’s most well-known work.

Oneika Russell was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, and graduated from Knox College High School. She attended sixth form at Ardenne High School in Kingston. It was while she was in sixth form that her doodling would give way to an identifiable interest in the visual arts. Eventually, she would attend the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts on the island, as a Painting major, though she did take a few courses in photography. At Edna Manley, Russell started doing research for an Aunt Jemima-like character she called Cookie, who would become the basis of her thesis work. Cookie was a commentary on the tourist industry and a critique of race, color and class issues in Jamaica. It is a particularly engaging body of work.

From Edna Manley College, Russell would go on to do her master’s degree at Goldsmiths College, where there was a strong focus on theory and where she started working in animation. Her thesis show for Goldsmiths was something she reports not having replicated since then. “I called the work I produced then interruptive painting, and I wanted to create something that was a hybrid art form. In this work I combined several genres around the character of a little girl. For many people this was new media work, but for me, it was still a painting.”

Following her time at Goldsmiths Russell returned to Jamaica and continued her practice, and was working on the island when the Japanese Embassy started offering scholarships to study in Japan. She applied to go and study the visual arts.

Naturally she wanted to know what it would be like for a Jamaican girl to study and live in Japan. “Actually,” Russell conceded, “I loved particularly the art culture in Japan, where there is not so much of an hierarchy among the various art forms. That, for me, was quite liberating. What I struggled with in Japan though was feeling very much like an outsider. I did not speak the language very well, and I lived in Kyoto, which is one of the most traditional places in Japan, even as there is a lot of focus on the environment in Kyoto. I guess in Japan I felt really alienated.”

This feeling of alienation would lead to Russell creating the “A Natural History” body of work. Consequently, Russell explained, if “A Natural History” reads at times like ethnographic works, this is no surprise to the artist who freely admits that in the works — in which she is photographing, videoing and drawing herself in nature — she was “using the language of Anthropology.” The artist continued, “What I sought to do in this work was use Caribbean flowers as a way to identify myself as Caribbean, even as I was using the female body and the flowers to talk about what I think of as my aesthetics and my identity. In short, I found myself in Japan seeking to develop a visual vocabulary and language to express my identity.”

In talking to Russell I was struck by the fact that she referenced language, vocabulary and speaking a lot in her work, particularly the work she did in Japan, and I tried to tease the reasons for this out of her in our discussion. “The fact is,” Russell explained to me, “it seemed to me after a while that I was studying language more than anything else when I was doing my doctoral studies in Japan. In Jamaica I knew myself to be someone quite articulate, but not at all so in Japan, where I was literally struggling to learn the language. I guess this is why language has come to take on so much importance in my work.”

But her time in Japan would see her starting, as well, a new body of work — in gold — that is ongoing. “When I was in Japan I used Facebook a lot to keep in touch with people. For a long time, during the years I was in Japan, Facebook in fact was my only connection to Jamaica. I started making portraits in gold from Facebook photographs of my friends. This ‘Selfie Drawing Project’ would accompany me when I moved back home to the island. For a long time I thought I would just preserve these selfies in gold and move on, particularly once I was back on the island.”

But, of course, this is not what happened.

The selfies started to take on a life of their own and the project keeps growing. In working with gold Russell found that she started thinking about preservations and our human relationships, particularly to gold. “Traditionally gold is a classy, almost universal indication of something precious and more valuable. I became intrigued with that idea and now the paintings in gold are getting larger and larger. I find, too, that they are changing values and I really started to challenge myself to see how many times I can make something different out of using the same basic materials.”

If the artist thought that, upon returning home to the island, the theme of alienation would disappear from her investigations, this is not what would happen, for this theme has remained and could be seen quite strongly in the work she showed in the 2015 Jamaica Biennial. “For me, the work in the Biennial site at Devon House was all about alienation. In this work I wrote a letter to myself and individual lines from the letter were placed on postcards in a child’s bedroom. What I was hoping to do with this work is to use these individual lines from the letter to connect different people.”

Given her continued focus on the theme of alienation, I wondered about her sense of the artistic community on the island.

For Russell the local art scene seems to be collapsing, due to lack of resources and funding. “There are few commercial gallery spaces on the island and a certain generation of art collectors are not collecting contemporary art as before,” she noted. When asked why this might be so, Russell said she imagines that “since the media used in a lot of contemporary art is shifting and changing, collectors might be a bit more shy about engaging with this new media.” She thought about it for a while before continuing. “The Jamaican art-buying public seems to be more educated about painting and drawing, less so about new media, so they may be more reticent in that regard.”

However, the artist remains hopeful.

“While many of the official venues for artists on the island are gone, more and more underground projects are starting up. There is The New Local Space — an artist-run contemporary visual art initiative in Kingston — that has generated a lot of interest on the island, and the National Gallery of Jamaica now seems to focus more on contemporary art production, which is always good for someone like myself who, for a long time thought of herself as a painter; but I was also making videos.”

The artist paused, before continuing. “The term ‘video artist’, for me, boxed me in, but I was clearly engaging new media and technology in my work. I find that I am making more and more work that is interdisciplinary in nature, and maybe these days I should just settle on calling myself not so much a painter anymore but simply a visual artist. I have found that particularly women artists on the island are engaging more interdisciplinary works, which of course calls into question our relationship to the art market since we are not making work that is specifically a commodity.

“In a sense and despite the difficulties, women artists like myself on the island still manage to do our work and the good thing is that curators do not treat us any differently, as far as I can see, from the male artists on the island. I feel I am treated seriously as an artist and whenever that happens it always gives you the confidence to keep doing your work. “

Until next time.

The Unseen Work of Preparing an Exhibit: An Artist’s Perspective

Two exhibits of my work, Oil and Water and Re/Viewing the American Landscape are currently on view at Blue Water Fine Arts in Port Clyde, Maine. I’ve been spending summers painting in Maine for close to forty years and exhibiting there for over thirty. Last summer Down East Magazine selected me, along with artists Alex Katz and William Wegman as cover artists for their 60th Anniversary issue. I continue to be amazed at the work which goes into putting together an exhibit.

As many of the works are watercolors, much thought goes into how to mat the artwork and how best it should be framed — what type/color of frame, type of mat (I am very fortunate to have an excellent craftsperson who makes my mats, and am in close proximity to a Frame Shop, owned by a delightful and knowledgeable Englishman whose family has a frame shop in England). I personally like to place the mat on the painting and secure it because, for me, even the smallest centimeter changes the entire intended design of the painting. One might think a gold frame is a gold frame but there are different types of gold frames — red gold, yellow gold, antique, water gilded- and one gold might not support the painting as well as another. When I hang an exhibit such as my current Reviewing the American Landscape I think of the exhibit as a whole and the framing more as a backdrop so as not to distract from the art.

I learned from working with National Gallery of Art Curator Sarah Cash who curated my Paris Exhibit Barbara Ernst Prey: An American View at the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris the importance of a good installation and thoughtful dialogue of the artwork. Before the exhibit goes up I work with the curator and think about which paintings compliment each other. In this current exhibit the gallery is the former Village Inn once owned by Architectural Digest Editor Paige Rense and artist Kenneth Noland. It’s charm is in the connection to the authenticity of the area and a reflection of what I have been documenting for many years.

As I am a native New Yorker (my mother was the Head of the Design Department at Pratt Art Institute and a great artist herself) people often ask me who comes to this exhibit. People come from all over the country to see the exhibit and it has become a sort of destination. Just this year the Chairman of the Board of a major museum flew in private for two hours, purchased some of the new paintings and then left. Another well known collector came up on their yacht and spent the night in the harbor. Some well known American Curators as well as Directors and collectors have walked though the exhibit.

My paintings are in the collections of The White House, the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum but also the Farnsworth Museum, which has an early painting of mine, here in Maine. My paintings from Maine are in collections worldwide, one currently on view at the U.S. Embassy Residence in Hong Kong. In between exhibition installation, I was able to accompany the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (I was appointed by the President of the United States to the National Council on the Arts, the advisory Board to The National Endowment for the Arts) on a part of her visit to Maine and then returned to finish the installation.

Something new for this year is an exhibit of a series of never before seen oil paintings. I’ve been secretly painting the area in oils and for the first time have exhibited them. I haven’t painted in oils since I was 17 and Governor Hugh Carey of New York purchased my first oil painting so it is a return with a more intimate series. This, of course, poses a whole new conundrum of how to hang an exhibit.

Hope you’ll stop in if you’re in Maine at Blue Water Fine Arts in Port Clyde, Maine.

Bridget Foley’s Diary: New Work Order

Employment — it’s a changing world.
Two recent media stories suggest just how much it’s changing while a third indicates that a considerable portion of the potential workforce may be in for a rude awakening.
The cover feature of the July/August print issue of The Atlantic proclaims: “The End of Work” with the subhead, “Technology will soon erase millions of jobs. Could that be a good thing?”
Derek Thompson wrote a provocative “what if” based on what is — the ongoing replacement of human labor by technology. His analysis is a big-picture look at the greater societal ramifications of a trend certain to continue, focused on the United States: “Industriousness has served as America’s unofficial religion since its founding.…What might happen if work goes away?” Citing academic experts, he lays out and examines three schools of thought: an enlightened-leisure utopia dependent upon “the right government provisions”; a revival of the artisan spirit and, the most bleak, a “precariat” working class going from task to task.
The New York Times feature (Aug. 15) examining what it’s like to work at Amazon.com had the entire working world abuzz. According to the piece, “Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace,” by Jodi Kantor and David

Do Open Marriages Work? How Dating Other People Brings Me Closer To My Husband

By Gracie X

For some people, perhaps, having an open marriage is a concession. Perhaps cheating comes to mind; you imagine that after infidelity, a couple has made a new vision of their marriage. These are marriages that “make- do” after the scar tissue has healed. But frankly, that isn’t the way it’s done in my polyamorous community, or my open marriage.

My situation is not at all about concessions. For me, sex with someone else is not a deal breaker. Being intentionally cruel, not taking care of our family, disrespecting me, and lying — all constitute deal breakers. But occasionally “stepping out” may just be part of our biology.

Right now, my marriage is mostly closed. Our lives are tremendously time-challenged. We have four kids and busy careers. But having some openness is one of many ingredients that keep the erotic life active in our marriage. Keeping an erotic charge can be challenging, given that almost every force in domestic life works against it. There are bills to be paid, kids demanding attention, and the endless, sexless grind of chores.

It all started a year ago, when my husband and I decided to go on an adventure. I wanted to have sex with a woman, not having done so in many years. The whole idea both titillated my husband and scared him a bit. We discussed what would make him feel safe and comfortable, and when he gave me the green light, I met a lovely woman online.

Bonnie, like me, was married and bisexual. We decided to meet at a local pub. There was an instant attraction. After half an hour of sipping martinis and flirting, we discovered that both of our husbands were parked close-by, nervously awaiting news of what was happening.

Sometimes, sleeping with new people is a measuring stick of how connected you are to your spouse.

Giggling, we texted them to join us. What followed was a new friendship between all of us. This is what I love about open marriage — the unpredictability. I was not expecting to be completely enchanted by her husband. Bill was so sex-positive and supportive about Bonnie exploring her newly confessed attraction to women. Bonnie had unintentionally “come out” at a BBQ the year before when she made out with her best friend — ironically, in a walk-in closet upstairs. While Bonnie’s best friend’s husband was angry and mortified, Bill was loving and supportive, encouraging Bonnie to explore this new part of her sexuality.

open marriges

The four of us had some great dates together. Eventually, time and family commitments slowed down our contact. But it was an adventure I’ll always cherish for many reasons — one of the main ones is that it heightened the love and trust between me and my husband. People assume that you get the excitement from the outside sexual encounters — and you sometimes do. But, as we explore who we are and what we desire, openness keeps the mystery alive between my husband and me.

The morning after our first date with Bonnie and Bill, my husband and I were snuggling and talking about how surprisingly fun and drama-free the evening had been. Our hearts were so open with the realization of how much we loved each other. Sometimes, sleeping with new people is a measuring stick of how connected you are to your spouse.

I am the last person alive who’d try extreme sports — I can barely grasp the need to risk your life in an effort to feel more alive. But there is an allure in the emotional skydiving of allowing your mate to be sexual with someone else. There’s exhilaration in moving through the fear of the potential loss of the relationship that, for us, is often followed by an all-consuming gratitude for each other; a gratitude that can get lost in the shuffle of mundane life.

I believe that the second wave of polyamory has a distinctly feminist bend to it. In most poly-marriages I know of, the woman is not a “victim,” but many times the initiator.

My open marriage improves my connection with my spouse. It is an intentional way to evolve together, a way to create spaciousness in our connection while also maintaining a deep bond.

Yesterday, I was talking to an acquaintance about my open marriage. She stated flatly “No one enters their marriage expecting they’ll open it.” She assumed I opened my marriage because it was flawed. Her concept of open marriage was that it was a patch job post “cheating”–a second best set up, built on the belief that passion fades, all relationships sour, and a series of necessary concessions have to be made, one of them being sex with other people.

Her thinking is fairly pervasive and a complete misread on most open marriages I know of. My open marriage improves my connection with my spouse. It is an intentional way to evolve together, a way to create spaciousness in our connection while also maintaining a deep bond. In my mind, the challenge of sustaining the vitality in long-term relationships lies in fostering the opposite qualities of passion versus stability, and wildness versus predictability. My interest lies in maintaining both ends of the spectrum, and openness in my marriage is one of the many tools I use to achieve this goal.

open marriage

Every open marriage is different, just as monogamous marriages are varied. People have different philosophies and motivations. For me, I want the freedom to create a marriage based on my value system — not someone else’s.

It’s a delicate balance to create stability and excitement in a marriage. There is a tipping point for me; to make it work I need trust, clear agreements, and lots of communication. I’ve often imagined if my house or phone were tapped by surveillance cops, they’d sit in a bored stupor listening to hours of my husband and I conversing about the nuance of our feelings, needs, fantasies, thoughts — they’d surely beg for the “good old days” of surveilling the mafia.

But it is this nuanced conversation that keeps my marriage fresh. Recently, my husband and I discussed what we would “allow” each other on separate upcoming business trips. After nearly an hour of checking in on how we both felt, the general state of our marriage, if the majority of our needs were being met sexually, emotionally, astrologically (kidding), we both agreed that we weren’t connected enough currently. What we really needed was a vacation together. The timing of our trips wasn’t good for us — and if we “hooked up” with other people, it could potentially cause hurt feelings. I only take calculated risks in my marriage. I am all about checking if there’s water in the pool before doing a spectacular high dive.

People have said to me, “Open marriage seems like so much work! I couldn’t be bothered to put so much time into an open marriage.” But the art of the relationship is something I feel devoted to. When you love something, you spend time caring for it.

Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I want to be in the habit of investing energy into the art of love, passion, and a continued sustaining bond with my husband. And for me, that means putting sleeping with other people on the table.

The Emotional Toll of a Cutthroat Work Environment

A recent article in the New York Times revealed the bruising workplace environment at Amazon. The gist? Amazon employees are encouraged to poke holes in one another’s ideas, give secret feedback about coworkers and work incredibly late hours (emails after midnight, anyone?). The takeaway was that Amazon pushes its employees beyond their limits.

But Amazon is not alone in this approach. As a New York City psychotherapist and former attorney, I understand when my patients complain of grueling hours, cutthroat competition, and the sacrifice of personal and family time. Today’s competitive corporate culture forces many people to confront a real-life conflict between personal and professional goals, productivity versus pleasure. Whether you work at Amazon or elsewhere, a demanding workplace environment can take a serious toll on your physical and emotional health if you are unprepared for the risks and tradeoffs. While professional success is a most worthy achievement, it should not come at the cost of your physical or emotional health.

Work-life balance is familiar term, but what exactly does it mean? It means being conscious of the choices and tradeoffs you are willing to make to get ahead. It means knowing what is important to you and what you are willing to sacrifice for added money or prestige. It means acknowledging your particular strengths and weaknesses and not trying to fit into a workplace culture that doesn’t suit your disposition. It means balancing what you have to do to earn incremental income with the personal cost. It also means making work bearable, and acknowledging when workplace stress is negatively impacting your life.

Maintaining a work-life balance takes intention and planning, but it is possible for every one of us when we set it as a priority. Even the most hard-driving people make decisions about where they draw the line. Here are a few things to think about when you are faced with work-life conflicts:

Don’t let inertia set in. If you feel stressed in a way that is affecting your mood, keeping you up at night, or causing conflict in your marriage or with other family members, then it is time to do something about it. Focus first on your relationships at work- with a boss, colleague or even an assistant — to better understand if there is underlying tension. Strained work relationships can undermine self-esteem and impede productivity, but they also increase tension at home, causing conflicts with a spouse or children. If you notice work relationships are a frequent source of conflict it’s time to address them before the problem gets worse.

Re-set priorities at different stages of life. Tradeoffs change at different stages of life, so at each major life event — marriage, children, elderly parents, illness, death of a loved one, or any traumatic event — take a pause. Ask yourself if more money or added prestige is worth missing important life events, like a Little League game or time with an aging parent? Think in terms of short- and long-range goals and responsibilities. What do you want or need to achieve today? Where do you want to be 5 years from now? Think of each decision as a tradeoff between present and future goals and personal and professional commitments.

Talk to someone. It’s vital to remember that the simple act of talking to someone can bring relief and improvement in your lifestyle and mental health. People often seek counsel because they experience symptoms of distress, but are unsure of the cause. Marital problems may be caused by work conflict and vice versa. By talking it through will you gain insight into the source of the conflict. Find someone you trust — a mentor, a counselor, friend or family member. Seek support if you feel that something is off.

Be realistic about how you manage stress. Not everyone is the same when it comes to their ability to tolerate stressful events and a demanding work environment. Some people thrive on the competition and pressure, but it’s not for everyone. Don’t feel the pressure to conform to someone else’s way of working unless you are prepared. As Socrates said: “Know thyself.”

Examine what success really means to you. Does success mean a large bank account, the acquisition of skill or expertise or being of service to others? Make sure you define success for yourself. You don’t want to look back on the sacrifices you made and ask: “Is that all there is?” Make sure that your definition of success is your own.

The bottom line? A cutthroat and bruising workplace environment is not for everyone. Know yourself. Don’t feel pressure to conform. Define what success means to you. Take a step back and evaluate your priorities. Don’t be afraid to draw a line in the sand. And whatever you do, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Work, Family Policies and Transitions to Adulthood in Europe

Work, Family Policies and Transitions to Adulthood in Europe

Work, Family Policies and Transitions to Adulthood in Europe systematically applies insights from social policy and gender studies to the new generation that are entering the labour market and trying to create their own autonomous household, with or without children. What does it mean to be a young adult in Europe during the economic crisis; how do they find their way on the increasingly flexible labour market, what are the social, economic and institutional barriers to leave their parental home and do social policies help them to combine work and family life? This book provides an analysis of ambivalent academic paradigms and EU policies, their implementation in national welfare states and offers comparative analyses of the demographic life course transitions of young adults, their entrance in (non) permanent jobs, their income (in)security, and the wide variety of childcare and working time policies and practices across Europe, revealing striking evidence for the geographical disparity of chances and options for young European adults.

A Woman’s Work Is Never Done

It’s no secret that many women are smarter than men. Why? As a rule, women are not just naturally intuitive, but constantly challenged to solve problems relating to home, family, and career while men often have the luxury of delegating or ignoring such responsibilities. During an interview at the University of Colorado in Boulder, the most honorable Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that:

I’m sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court]? And I say ‘When there are nine.’ People are shocked. But there’ve been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.

It’s easy to see why men would be shocked by Ginsburg’s reply. All one has to do is consider their behavior, as evidenced in these clips from 1957’s The Music Man and 1970’s Company.

Obviously, women see things differently (as evidenced in these two numbers from 1950’s Guys and Dolls and 1964’s Hello, Dolly!).

The battle of the sexes may be as old as time. But men often approach the battlefield armed with belligerence, brawn and bravado while women manage to bewitch, bother, and bewilder them with a potent combination of brains and beauty. In many historical periods men have automatically assumed power while women had to use whatever knowledge was available to gain and assert their power.

A newly restored print of a 1920 comedy directed by Robert Thornby turned out to be one of the more delightful surprises at the 2015 San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Wikipedia offers the following summary of the plot of The Deadlier Sex:

Based upon a review in a film publication, Mary Willard (Blanche Sweet), who has taken control of her father’s interests after his death, has become so exasperated at the unscrupulous business practices of Harvey Judson (Mahlon Hamilton) that she has him kidnapped to teach him a lesson and protect her shareholders against him.

When Harvey wakes up in the forest, he initially believes that robbery was the motive until he discovers that no money was taken. He tries to bribe his guide to take him to the nearest settlement but to no avail, and, after two fist fights with a Frenchman (Boris Karloff) who is also in love with Mary, eventually comes up with a scheme which leads to his discovery by his friends.

When Harvey finds that Mary was the cause of this, they argue and he accuses her of trying to ruin him. While on the way to the nearest train station they have an automobile crash that nearly kills them. At the station, after they are told that the government has seized their property, Mary and Harvey decide to work together in the future.

Blanche Sweet as Mary Willard in The Deadlier Sex

After appearing on stages since she was four years old (Sweet started her career touring with Maurice Barrymore in The Battle of the Strong), the teenaged actress starred in D.W. Griffith’s 1914 film, Judith of Bethulia. Although set to appear in 1915’s The Birth of A Nation, she was replaced by Lillian Gish.

Shot on location in and around Truckee, California, Sweet later referred to The Deadlier Sex as one of the films “I knew I shouldn’t do.” Her characterization of Mary Willard as a sly, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning young businesswoman was a far cry from the stereotypical damsel in distress that was a staple of so many silent films.

Blanche Sweet as Mary Willard in The Deadlier Sex

In addition to the young Boris Karloff’s portrayal of a macho trapper, The Deadlier Sex featured strong performances by Winter Hall as Mary’s father, Roy Laidlaw as Huntley Green, and Russell Simpson as Jim Willis. With live accompaniment by Guenter Buchwald, the film had a certain rustic charm.

Although Sweet was a major star in silent films (who even managed a brief transition to talkies), few of her films are available today. In 1930’s Show Girl in Hollywood, she introduced the song “There’s a Tear for Every Smile in Hollywood,” whose lyrics read as follows:

You’re like a million others
Who seek the road to fame
But soon you’ll realize
It’s not an easy climb.
You’ll find like all the others
Whose dreams are just the same
The road is not as rosy
As Sunday papers claim.

There’s a tear for every smile in Hollywood
Every mile’s a weary mile in Hollywood
A million dreams are born with each day
A million dreams keep fading away
Like the spider and the fly is Hollywood
Where a broken-hearted sigh is understood
Though fortune seems to beckon to some
There’s a tear for every smile in Hollywood.

While women may have felt oppressed for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, at least they didn’t have to fear a legal (and loathsome) form of rape known as the droit du seigneur. A purportedly popular practice in late Medieval Europe, droit du seigneur gave a feudal lord the right to take the virginity of his serfs’ daughters.

That practice is a pivotal plot point in 1778’s The Marriage of Figaro (a play by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais that was adapted into a four-act opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786). Not only must Susanna find a way to keep the Count Almaviva’s hands off her as she prepares to wed the Count’s servant, Figaro, she must also find a way to help her mistress (the Countess Almaviva) save her marriage from the embarrassment of the Count’s constant philandering.

Add to the mix a horny page, a curious birthmark, a drunken gardener, a lusty old spinster who claims to have won the right to marry Figaro if he defaults on a loan, as well as a bitter old man who craves revenge for the way Figaro stole Rosina from under his roof (thus enabling her to marry the Count Almaviva) and you’ve got lots of mischief involving mistaken identities framed by a magical musical score.

As part of its 2015 summer season, the San Francisco Opera revived its 33-year-old production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, populating the cast with five former Adler Fellows (including conductor Patrick Summers), one current Adler Fellow (Maria Valdes as Barbarina), and a veteran of the Merola Opera Program who has performed with the company for more than four decades (John del Carlo).

Figaro (Philippe Sly) and Susanna (Lisette Oropesa) in
Act I of Le Nozze di Figaro (Photo by: Cory Weaver)

The casting paid off in spades. Philippe Sly’s sonorous Figaro was far more athletic (and almost balletic) than what one usually encounters; as Susanna, Lisette Oropesa glowed with the charm and sparkle of a young woman in love (and sang rapturously as well). Luca Pisaroni’s Count Almaviva was a special delight, nicely balanced by Nadine Sierra’s portrayal of his Countess.

In comedic supporting roles, John Del Carlo scored strongly as Bartolo with Catherine Cook as a robust Marcellina. Greg Fedderly was a delightfully meddlesome Basilio while John Easterlin added to the fun as Don Curzio. Bojan Knezevi was a noticeably besotted Antonio.

At the performance I attended Angela Brower easily won over the audience as Cherubino. But what made the evening especially satisfying for me was the savvy stage direction by Robin Guarino, who added telling bits of body language for Figaro, Susanna, and Cherubino.

in Act IV of Le Nozze di Figaro = (Photo by: Cory Weaver)

Looking back over the years, I recall that my first exposure to Le Nozze di Figaro took place sometime in the mid 1960s at the New York City Opera. That was nearly 15 years before surtitles began being projected above the proscenium in opera houses. Even when sung in English, I found it difficult to follow the plot.

These days, surtitles make it much easier for audiences to follow the text and understand the set-up for various sight gags. During one intermission, the house curtain was raised so that the audience could watch the stage crew change the scenery while a member of the company’s staff took live questions from a dedicated Twitter feed. Additional educational tools (like the following video) undoubtedly help those who are experiencing Mozart’s opera for the very first time.

Not only does today’s technology allow audiences to follow the story with surtitles, it also makes it possible for the San Francisco Opera to simulcast a live performance from the War Memorial Opera House to a packed baseball stadium across town at AT&T Park.

I was especially lucky at the performance I attended to be seated down front in the orchestra, where it was much easier to watch how certain artists (especially Luca Pisaroni) crafted their phrasing during arias and worked as part of an ensemble when required to do so by the dramatic shenanigans concocted by Beaumarchais. In an entertainment world that frequently bludgeons audiences into submission with overamplification, it’s a visceral joy to be able to hear an artist’s natural voice and experience a wide range of musical nuances.

Special credit goes to Maestro Patrick Summers, who led a beautiful performance of Mozart’s opera. The following clip offer some highlights from the San Francisco Opera’s production:

The Best Places to Shop for Jeans, Dresses, and Work Outfits If You’re Size 26/28

By Sarah Conley

If you love fashion, getting dressed should be a treat. That is, of course, unless you happen to be plus-size. Headlines will have you believe that the plus-size fashion industry is booming, but if you wear a size 26/28, the fashion-forward options are still extremely limited. For example, Violeta by Mango stops at a size 22, while fast-fashion retailers like Fashion to Figure, ASOS, and H&M+ stop at a size 24.

Although shopping in retail stores is possible at only a handful of brands, there are more retailers to be found online. We know you’ve got places to be and people to see, so we’ve put together this quick and easy shopping guide to navigating the best brands that offer sizes 26 and 28.

Workwear: Lane Bryant
When it comes to workwear, Lane Bryant is a classic. Its pants come in a variety of hem lengths and cuts, and the assortment includes a few trend colors every season. Strengths: Kiyonna is great at designing bust- and waist-enhancing dresses in solid colors; IGIGI has fun with saturated jewel tones and prints, effortlessly mixing them into daytime and office-appropriate styles. It also has a small but mighty selection of gowns and bridal.

Rockport Works Shoes Women’s Composite Toe RK664 EH Non Metal Work Boots

Rockport Works Shoes Women’s Composite Toe RK664 EH Non Metal Work Boots

Unless you’re actually royalty, you probably have to worry about money. That means going to work every day, and working hard so you can keep making that money. And when you work hard, you need work boots that can work even harder…something like these Rockport Works RK664 Women’s Brown 6-Inch Waterproof Non-Metallic Composite Toe EH Boots. The dark brown uppers of these Rockport boots are made with tumbled, full-grain leather. Natural full-grain leather is made from whole hide, so you get all the best features of the material. This leather is resilient, tough, and waterproof to protect you from the elements. But full-grain’s real strength is in its softness: the material of these EH boots is flexible so it stays comfortable around every step. The tumbled grain creates a slightly textured finish. The 6-inch uppers of these women’s boots aren’t just made with leather, they’re lined for comfort. Hydro-Defense waterproof booties completely block moisture to keep you dry when you wear these composite toe boots. Abrasion-resistant nylon mesh material gently wicks moisture away from your feet, so even sweat is well-managed. Use the lace-to-toe design to get a perfect fit and these safety toe boots will work to keep you perfectly comfortable.Speaking of comfort, these non-metal boots are fitted with EVA cushion inserts. Soft EVA foam is lightweight and airy, and in these work boots it’s made with Adiprene shock-absorbing pads. Adidas Adriprene in the heel and rebounding forepart soak up impact when you step down, so your feet and legs feel much less of that jarring shock. A dual-density outsole design adds double shock-resistance to the design of these Rockport boots. The polyurethane midsoles and rubber traction bottoms are directly attached to the leather uppers. Shock-resistant polyurethane is lighter in weight than rubber, and made for absorbing impact. Bouncy, durable rubber helps you spring back every time you step down while wearing these brown boots. More Adiprene shock-absorbing pads are integrated into the two-layer sole design. Thanks to the direct-attach construction, the soles are well-secured to the uppers in a firm, stable bond.Extra-wide toes create plenty of room for the protective composite toe caps. The composite toes are part of the 100% non-metallic design of these Rockport boots. No metal means these women’s boots are security-friendly. The composite toes means your feet will be well-protected against impact and compression. In fact, they meet ASTM F2413-05 standards for resistance to impact and compression. It’s the same standard steel toe caps meet, but composite is much lighter in weight and safer than steel. Composite won’t conduct temperature or electricity, the way steel will.Get ready to work hard with these Rockport Works RK664 Women’s Brown 6-Inch Non-Metallic Composite Toe EH Waterproof Boots. We’ve put together five fail-safe summer outfit idea formulas that you can use for everyday of the week. Thanks to these stylish ladies, you’ll no longer have to stand in front of your closet wondering just what the heck you’re going to wear to the office.

work-outfit-formula-belted-shirt-dress-wedges-1Monday: A button-down dress + skinny belt + wedges. You’re most likely in #strugglemode on the first day of the week, so make getting dressed for the office as easy as possible. Go with a button-down shirt dress cinched at the waist and heels that aren’t too high.

work-outfit-formula-TJ-shorts-blazer-blouseTuesday: A blazer + tailored shorts + pumps. By this time you’ve shaken off the sleepy vibes of Monday and have your style sea legs under you. Put together an outfit that says, “I actually tried,” like a blazer, frilly blouse, a pair of tailored shorts, and sharp pumps.

work-outfit-ideas-formula-TJ-jane-keltner-de-valle2Wednesday: A silk blouse + A-line skirt + ankle-strap sandals. Celebrate Hump Day (and the beginning of the end of the week) in an outfit that looks like it took way longer to put together than it actually did. Might we suggest a silky blouse, a structured skirt, and ankle-strap sandals.

work-outfit-formula-t-shirt-dressy-a-line-skirt2Thursday: A T-shirt + knee-length skirt. Get away with wearing a T-shirt at the office with the help of a fancy knee-length skirt. Now you’re dressed for both a meeting with the boss and happy hour drinks with friends.

work-outfit-idea-formula-TJ-culottes-cropped-summer-sweater2Friday: Culottes + a crop top + heels. You’ve made it! The end of the week calls for comfort—culottes and a cropped summer sweater should do the trick. Add heels for an after-work dinner and drinks date with your love.

Making Therapy Work for You: Have Your Feelings Without Your Feelings Having You

I’ve noticed that most people come in to therapy with some preconception about what to do with their feelings in session: Some believe that venting will help them to heal, others feel that it will be most helpful to remain distanced from their feelings so that they can analyze them. They’re both right. And they’re both wrong. It’s the use of both of these modes in alternation that’s most helpful — though I think that there are better ways to describe them than “venting” and “analyzing.”

We need to value our feelings and use them rather than trying to get rid of them through either venting or analyzing. I’ve found that the best way to do this is to let feelings rise into consciousness, fully experience them, contain them and learn from them, and then decide what to do about them. This means expressing feelings without reacting to them impulsively, and then making conscious decisions about how to live based on what we learn from them.

This whole process could take minutes or years. Some feelings take a long time to fully rise into conscious, and to be fully experienced and fully understood. Others emerge quickly.

This brings up a common misconception about the best way to handle feelings. Many people confuse repression with suppression: Repression is an unconscious way of avoiding disturbing feelings. Suppression, on the other hand, is a healthier tactic in which we make a conscious decision not to focus on something that we already understand. Once you have some sense of why you worry needlessly about something, for instance, it makes perfect sense to delay worrying about that issue, quarantining it until Saturday morning from 10:15 until 10:40 if you need to. It’s not necessarily bad to put a feeling aside if you already understand what you have to learn from it.

One reason that it’s important to carefully explore feelings as they occur in the session is that we often have layers of feeling, and the obvious layer may not be the most significant one: anxiety may sit on top of anger or sadness, and anger may easily cover fear.

Anne, for instance, was furious that her cousin Sandra cancelled her trip to visit her. She knew that Sandra had some serious problems that made it almost impossible to visit, so she could try to be reasonable about it and avoid the feeling rather than lambasting someone who really didn’t deserve it. But she also knew that she tended to become resentful or explode later when she did that. Instead she decided to sit with the feeling, describe it, hold it, see how it felt in her body, and notice the feelings of sadness and fear underneath. She eventually realized that she was very afraid of being alone and forgotten, an old feeling that had little to do with her cousin, and much to do with her past and the way she treated herself. She decided that she needed to make an effort to nurture her relationships with people who had made themselves available, but with whom she hadn’t followed through. And that she needed to thoughtfully and more regularly “visit” her own feelings rather than ignoring them or reacting to them impulsively. This was just one in a series of episodes in which she learned to regulate her affect, to have her feelings without her feelings having her.

Some people have difficulty accessing feeling at all. If this is the case for you, you’ll need to slow down and focus. Focus on the body to see what you can learn from it. Focus on any seemingly insignificant reactions you have toward your therapist. Focus on the incidents during your week in which you felt the greatest degree of happiness or sadness. It’s like slowing down a video to watch the details in slow motion. Or to use an auditory metaphor instead, it’s like a radio signal that’s very faint. You’ll need clear everything else away and listen carefully at first. As you come to identify and recognize the signals, they’ll eventually be easier to hear.

One sure way to sabotage the effectiveness of your therapy is to engage in avoidant and addictive behavior — behavior that allows you to temporarily evade disturbing feelings. If you start to feel something in your session, but then drown it in a binge of drinking, eating or shopping, you won’t get as much from the process. This is not to say that you have to wait to get over your addiction before you begin therapy, but that you may need to focus on the addiction in the early part of your process.

Emotions have a communicative aspect to them — they want something to be witnessed. I’m stressing your response to your own emotions here, but I also want to be clear that there is no substitute for having your emotions seen and empathically received by someone else — in this case your therapist. But they can’t do that if you don’t let them see what you’re going through.

Finally, as we improve our relationship with our difficult feelings, we also find that we can savor the pleasurable ones more easily. And that makes the process of psychotherapy even more worthwhile.

This is the third post in a series about how clients can most effectively use their time in psychotherapy. For an introduction see my post 10 Tips to Make Therapy Work for You, and for a complete description of 10 these tools see my book: I’m Working On It In Therapy.

I’ll be posting next week about how to use the therapeutic relationship. Click “Become a Fan” at the top of this post if you want to make sure you don’t miss it.
