Shinola to Launch ‘The Champ’ Watch to Honor Health-care Workers

Shinola is making lemonade out of lemons.
The Detroit-based brand with the Made in the U.S. ethos has rejiggered the messaging around its latest timepiece, pivoting from its planned launch for the now-canceled Olympic Games to instead support health-care workers fighting the coronavirus.
Shinola had originally planned to introduce “The Champ,” a Detrola watch, at the Olympic’s Opening Ceremony in Tokyo next month. Now The Champ will be launched to honor “the real champs,” the company said — the health-care workers in its hometown of Detroit.
The watch is available for pre-purchase beginning today and is expected to be delivered in late July, pending the reopening of the Shinola factory. It retails for $ 395 and is limited to 500 units.

The Champ retails for $ 395.

The Champ features a multicolored matte dial in a striped pattern of red, gold, bright blue, bright green and black along with the Shinola Detroit and Detrola collection logos. The cream colored 43-mm. case in TR90 resin is anchored by a stainless-steel core and Argonite 705 movement that was hand-assembled in Detroit, and the dial features a double-domed K1 crystal. The unisex watch also has a black silicone strap.
To coincide with the launch, Shinola has pledged to donate $ 197,500 to

Rag & Bone Lays Off Retail, Corporate Workers

Rag & Bone is yet another company that’s making permanent changes due to the economic fallout caused by the coronavirus.
The brand has permanently laid off at least 70 employees, WWD has learned, a mix of retail and corporate workers, and furloughed the rest of its staff for the time being. The layoffs affect operations in the U.S., where it has 30 stores, including several outlet locations.
A company representative confirmed there were layoffs without specifying how many people were affected, but said there was a reduction in employees across the whole of corporate and retail.
“A comprehensive assessment of all areas within the business was made to maintain the critical needs of the organization,” the company said in a statement.
Those who lost their jobs with Rag & Bone permanently were given severance and assistance with health-care benefits. According to state notices filed in New York and California, which only cover workers in those states, at least 220 Rag & Bone workers have been laid off or furloughed.
As for those on furlough, the company did not say it has a planned date for when they will be put back to work, only that it will be “as soon as it’s possible.”

Lingerie Companies Support Medical Workers During Coronavirus

Innerwear brands continue to support the ladies.
But now, some brands — including Wacoal America and ThirdLove — are going one step further by donating free bras and underwear to nurses and other essential medical staff working in coronavirus hotspots the week starting May 6, or National Nurses Week.
So far, Wacoal America has donated roughly 3,000 pieces — a combination of bras and panties — to workers in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey, among other locations. Lingerie start-up ThirdLove distributed 1,000 pieces to nurses in New York and San Francisco. The brand is also offering extra discounts to members of the military and teachers through its e-commerce business.
Mitch Kauffman, president and chief executive officer of Wacoal America, said the donations are “one way to show Wacoal’s appreciation to nurses and medical professionals fighting on the front lines of the health pandemic,” and to keep them feeling “comfortable and supported.”
“We are all in this together,” Kauffman said. “And we appreciate all that they are doing.”
National Nurses’ Week begins May 6 and ends May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is often called the founder of modern nursing. The event takes on a new meaning this year as the coronavirus continues

Workers Rights Consortium Launches COVID-19 Brand Tracker

MAKING A LIST: In association with Pennsylvania State University’s Center for Global Workers’ Rights, the Workers Rights Consortium has created a “COVID-19 Brand Tracker.” The tracker offers a list that will continually be updated to indicate which apparel labels and retailers are paying their suppliers for orders that are in production or completed, as well as those that are refusing to do so.
As of late in the day Tuesday, companies that had committed to paying in full for completed orders and in-production ones were H&M, Adidas, Nike, Inditex, PVH Corp., Target (U.S.), VF Corp., Uniqlo, Marks & Spencer, LPP and Kiabi. Suppliers have raised concerns that VF is not honoring that commitment, and WRC is looking into that, as it will with any similar concerns about other companies, according to the site.
The tracker also lists companies that have not made a commitment to pay in full for orders completed and in-production ones. C&A, Gap, Primark, Kohl’s, Arcadia, J.C. Penney, Bestseller, Urban Outfitters, Asos, Mothercare, Tesco, Walmart and Next were the companies listed in that category, according to the WRC’s new tool.
The WRC’s COVID-19 Brand Tracker has ancillary information that acknowledges how COVID-19 has resulted in a huge drop in demand

Everlane ended this week with several hundred fewer workers as it struggles to cope with the shutdown of its retail business over measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Although the California company has spent the last two weeks e-mailing customers about reduced prices for its brand, made up of casual basics, and striking a positive tone with employees, in the end it decided to layoff and furlough more than 200 workers, including retail and those operating backend functions.

Della Valle Blasts Workers’ Strike

Italian media turned their attention on Tod’s chief Diego Della Valle on Saturday as the entrepreneur reacted to the closure of the Colosseum a day earlier due to an employees’ assembly that created havoc among tourists waiting outside the monument.
“People that may be in the right and have their reasons [to protest], when they are engaged in matters that are related to the reputation of the country, should think twice [about the consequences],” said Della Valle on national television.  The Tod’s group has sponsored the restoration of the Colosseum with a donation of 25 million euros, or $ 28.5 million at current exchange.
Separately, Tod’s has also financed a new recreational center for Save the Children in a suburb of Naples. According to daily Corriere della Sera, this is part of the “Noi Italiani”  project that Della Valle has set in motion. As reported, the entrepreneur has trademarked  the logo of his association  (“We Italians”), which is meant to  focus on solving practical problems in areas ranging from  security and work to education and health.
