NEW YORK — Standing smack-dab in the middle of Barneys New York’s subterranean beauty floor at its Madison Avenue flagship, the onetime beacon of luxury commerce now resembles a set from the depths of a Space-Age horror film.
Light bounced off the stark white fixtures that once held tubes of luxury lipstick and antiaging potions as fluorescent track lighting flickered along a mirrored wall where perfume bottles had been displayed like prized whiskies. They were gone, as were all of the skin-care testers — save for a few straggler bottles of Augustinus Bader’s much fussed about $ 300 “miracle” cream, which seemed to have been strategically decanted of their contents.

What was once at the cutting edge of fashion, entertainment and consumption has quickly been rendered as a time capsule from grander, off-line times. Barneys’ famed flagship will close on Sunday, sold through of its last stained velvet chair and scratched steel display case.

New York Underground Fashion Lives on With SC103

It was the evening after New York Fashion Week had ended, but the road was not yet over for Claire McKinney and Sophie Andes-Gascon of the emerging label SC103.
Last week the design duo showed their sophomore collection in an empty storefront on lower Ludlow Street — where the runway spilled out onto the sidewalk, causing models and errant pedestrians to share the same pavement. It demonstrated McKinney and Andes-Gascon’s willingness to cast themselves outside the established fashion industry.
SC103, named for McKinney and Andes-Gascon’s shared apartment in Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, N.Y., launched with a similarly underground runway show six months ago. The event drew hundreds of downtown creative types and featured artist Bobbi Salvör Menuez, San Francisco creative Jackie Shuya Tan, Café Forgot cofounder Vita Haas and fashion multihyphenate Maryam Nassir Zadeh as models.
Uncertain if they would ever show again, the collection was a now-or-never effort, with the designers parading a bounty of references and techniques that explored elements of femininity and handicraft. This season the same crowd returned to see a thoughtful, more focused collection that was based in shock.

While the New York Fashion Week fall 2020 schedule lacked a number of major designer brands, the week was still full of memorable moments that sent social media abuzz.
This season, designers’ front rows had a number of viral moments, namely Leslie Jones at Christian Siriano, where videos of the comedian enthusiastically cheering on model Coco Rocha sent social media into a frenzy, and at Brandon Maxwell, where stars from Netflix’s new docu-series, “Cheer,” sat in the front row and gave each model their famous “mat-talk.”
Other designers brought some added star power to their shows, including Miley Cyrus walking at the Marc Jacobs show, Debbie Harry singing at Coach and Orville Peck performing at Michael Kors.

Model Alliance Holds Protest Outside Victoria’s Secret Flagship in New York

NEW YORK — About 20 members and supporters of the Model Alliance protested near the entrance of the Victoria’s Secret Herald Square store Friday afternoon.
Holding heart-stamped signs that read “WE HEAR YOUR SILENCE” and “CALL ME 1-800-RESPECT,” the demonstrators circled the sidewalk, chanting “Victoria’s Silence” and “What do we want? Respect. When do we want it? Now.”
The 90-minute event was organized to raise awareness regarding complaints of sexual harassment and abuse by Victoria’s Secret employees and agents against fashion models who have worked with the brand, and to urge the company to address these serious allegations by joining the Model Alliance’s Respect Program. Earlier this month the Model Alliance sent an open letter cosigned by more than 100 models, including Amber Valletta, Christy Turlington Burns, Edie Campbell, Karen Elson and Iskra Lawrence as well as Time’s Up, calling on Victoria’s Secret chief executive officer John Mehas to join its Respect Program. The program calls for participants to adhere to a code of conduct to safeguard models.
Among the protesters was Nathalia Novaes, a model, who joined the Model Alliance’s leadership council this year. In her 10 years of modeling she has not worked for Victoria’s Secret, but she wanted to stand

‘Always in Fashion’ Moves to 710 WOR, Owned by iHeart Media New York

“Always in Fashion,” the fashion business radio show hosted by Mark Weber, former chairman and chief executive officer of Donna Karan International and ceo of LVMH Inc., the U.S. subsidiary, and his son, Jesse Weber, a lawyer and TV host on the Law and Crime Network, changed stations.
The broadcast can be heard on 710 WOR, the Voice of New York, on Saturday from 8 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Apparently, designing a 26-piece collection and opening a pop-up flower store were not enough for the New York designer. She also volunteered her baking skills to ensure that guests got a sampling of her homemade cookies with hand-pressed flowers. Her schedule last week basically amounted to a second job. After a full day’s work, she came home every night to bake for a solid three hours, usually from 9 p.m. until midnight. That drill intensified Saturday with five hours in the kitchen and then nearly a full day at the stove Sunday. “My feet were killing me. I went from fitting the clothes to making the cookies,” Rose said.
Guests stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the Greenwich Avenue shop trying to get a glimpse of the models wearing designs inspired by the Chelsea flower markets. Amidst the forsythia and racks of looks such as a silk satin one-shoulder dress with a turban sleeve and a botanical crepe open-neck dress with delicate crystal details, a table laden with plates of delicate-looking cookies anchored the room.

New York Fashion Week: Men’s Struggles to Survive

New York Fashion Week: Men’s continued its downward spiral this week as the number and caliber of participating brands slid even further.
The official calendar listed only 23 labels over the three days with Todd Snyder and N. Hoolywood the biggest and best-known names. The biggest chunk participated as part of Agentry PR’s New York Men’s Day, where 10 brands were featured.
The anemic calendar drew few retailers — Bergdorf Goodman’s Bruce Pask was the only identifiable merchant spotted in the front row — and top editors were few and far between.
Even so, Steven Kolb, chief executive officer of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, said men’s-only dates will continue to be part of the official calendar going forward. The dates will be in June — as they were last year — at the same time as women’s resort and right after the organization’s annual awards presentation.
But aside from setting the dates, the CFDA is no longer providing any financial support and has pretty much left the decision to show up to the individual brands.

The New York Fashion Week fall 2020 collections might be lacking a few major designers from its calendar, but a number of public NYFW events are bringing some added buzz to the six-day affair.
Fashion week is seeing a bunch of new pop-up concepts this season geared to attract editors, influencers and the street style set in between shows, including an art exhibit by Pantone, which is celebrating its 2020 Color of the Year (Classic Blue) in an immersive way.
Some designers are also changing up their fashion week strategy, namely Phillip Lim, who is forgoing his traditional runway show for a “house party,” which is open to the public.

Dressier Aesthetic Finds Fans at New York Men’s Trade Shows

It’s no secret that department stores are having a tough time of it as online retailers continue to chisel away at their business. In 2019, sales in that channel dropped 5.5 percent, according to the Census Bureau, on top of a 1.2 percent decline in 2018.
The climate for independent specialty stores is not much better, but those who have managed to survive up to this point have figured out a formula for success. It revolves around offering personal service and innovative product to update and modernize men’s wardrobes. Because most specialty merchants also count tailored clothing as the traditional strength of their business, the shift away from streetwear and back to a more dressed-up aesthetic is also lifting their spirits — and their sales.
As a result, stores shopping the New York men’s market this week were buying suits, sport coats and outerwear with technical properties such as stretch and stain-resistance as well as sweaters and shirts that provided comfort but still looked professional.
“The only thing we have to compete with is service and the personal touch,” said Ted Silver, owner of Weiss & Goldring in Alexandria, La. That translates into a “mixture of dress with casual” looks, he said. He

The issue of men’s cancer will be brought to the forefront during New York Fashion Week: Men’s at the fourth annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show.
The show, which is scheduled for Feb. 5 at 5:30 at Pier59 Studios, is intended to raise awareness of men’s health issues, with a focus on prostate cancer, which takes the life of a man every 17 minutes.
This year, designers and brands including Thom Browne, Emporio Armani, Brooks Brothers, Stephen Ferber, Nick Graham, Michael Kors, Bruno Magli, Gustavo Moscoso, Ryan Seacrest Distinction and John Varvatos will reimagine the traditional blue blazer. New Yorkers were bombarded with weather alerts today, warning them of an impending “snow squall.”
The term, seemingly unfamiliar to most, is defined as an “intense short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds,” according to weather.gov.

Behind the Seams: Costumes for New York City Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’

What would “The Nutcracker” be without its pink tutus and illustrative sweets? The annual festive production is now under way at New York City Ballet, where it takes a staff of nearly 50 to craft and maintain the hundreds of intricate costumes required for George Balanchine’s holiday-season staple. WWD paid the company’s costume atelier a visit to see how they get it done.
Each year the city ballet’s in-house costume shop sees a mad dash in the lead-up to “The Nutcracker’s” five-week run at Lincoln Center, where the production is staged about 50 times. The task is one of historical reverence, as the company still uses original designs devised in 1954 by Balanchine’s chosen costumer Barbara Karinska, calling for some 150 looks with a cast ranging from ages eight into the mid-40s.
While ballet’s cascade of holiday-treat-inspired characters — hot chocolate, marzipan, candy canes and tea — appear effortless onstage, they require a taskmaster to see that they all get done. Enter Marc Happel, city ballet’s costume director who manages the shop’s tricks of the trade. That light pink tutu skirt? There’s actually “layers of flesh tulle, beige and layers of another pink underneath which gives it more depth,” Happel explained. An

Persol Opens First New York City Store

Legacy eyewear brand Persol is opening its first New York store this week.
The brand, founded in 1917, has set down roots in NoLIta — choosing a small storefront at 253 Elizabeth Street. This adds to two recent openings for the label — one in Milan’s Brera district and the other on Los Angeles’ Rodeo Drive.
The store will offer on-site engraving, customization and optical services. A limited-edition version of its 649 model will be exclusively available at the NoLIta location.
Rocco Basilico, the general manager for Ray-Ban’s North American retail division (which oversees Persol retail operations), said of the opening: “We’re excited to announce the opening of our first New York Persol boutique and our third location globally…This boutique is reminiscent of the brand’s European roots and offers our clientele an elevated shopping experience matched with neighborhood culture. Bloomingdale’s to Open Pop-up at The Loews Regency New York Hotel

The Loews Regency New York Hotel will open a Bloomingdale’s holiday pop-up shop in the hotel’s lobby lounge from Nov. 29 (Black Friday) through Dec. 24.
The pop-up shop will feature a selection of holiday gifts, accessories, Bloomingdale’s-branded merchandise as well as on-site monogramming of leather gifts by Royce New York.
The Loews Regency New York Hotel is at 540 Park Avenue at 61st Street.
Shoppers will also have a chance to round up their purchases at the register with the change being donated to the Child Mind Institute, Bloomingdale’s philanthropic partner.
Bloomingdale’s will be selling a selection of holiday-themed items, including their Little Brown Bear which benefits Child Mind Institute. It sells for $ 20, with $ 4 going to Child Mind Institute.
“Bloomingdale’s has been a great partner of ours for the past few years,” said John Maibach, managing director, Loews Regency New York Hotel. “We are constantly looking for new ways to provide our guests with seamless and unique experiences, and we believe this partnership offers a new and fresh take on the hotel gift shop. We are excited about its debut and hope it becomes an annual tradition.”

Ledbury Gets Capital Infusion, Opening New York Store

Ledbury is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a cash infusion that it will use to fund its growth.
The men’s shirt specialist from Richmond, Va., has closed on a $ 4.5 million financing round led by Harbert Venture Partners, an early investor in the brand.
Paul Trible, founder and chief executive officer of Ledbury, said the capital will be used to expand its brick-and-mortar presence, including a store in New York’s Greenwich Village. A 1,600-square-foot store at 355 Bleecker Street, between Charles and West 10th Streets, is slated to open sometime next month.
Ledbury operates two stores: a flagship at the brand’s headquarters in Richmond as well as one at Cady’s Alley in Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
“With the closing of our capital raise, we feel like we’re in a spot to use the funds for our growth initiatives,” Trible said. “We’re planning to open around 10 stores over the next three years.”
Trible said the locations will be in major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco, as well as smaller markets including Charlotte, N.C., Nashville and Lexington, Ky. The cities are being selected by looking at Ledbury’s strongest online markets.
“We have 50,000 e-commerce customers and our top market is New York,” he said,

HUG Gala Returns to New York City This November

Lingerie leaders and swimwear’s biggest names are headed back to the Big Apple this fall for the 64th annual HUG Gala. 
Project Help Us Give Gala, a New York-based charity formed by lingerie and swimwear leaders, is hosting its annual fund-raiser on Nov. 6 at 230 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. 
This year’s event, which will honor retail and lingerie veterans Susan DeMusis and Dora Lau, is expected to bring together approximately 150 people in the intimates apparel industry as they mix, mingle and raise money for charity. C-suite executives from names such as Victoria’s Secret, Wacoal, Chantelle, Jockey, Target and Kohl’s are just some that have been invited. In addition, suppliers and manufacturers, such as Lenzing Fibers, are expected to make an appearance. 
“As president of Project Help Us Give, I am proud and privileged to lead the club forward into its 65th year,” Camille Block, Project HUG president, said in a statement. “The two exceptional women we are honoring, Susan DeMusis and Dora Lau, are eager to make this the best HUG gala ever.”
She likened the yearly event to a “who’s who of the intimates industry,” but added that she’s hoping to see some new faces this year.

BMW Signs On as New York Fashion Week’s Official Automotive Partner

BMW is looking to claim a piece of New York’s fashion pie. The German automotive company’s North American division has signed a deal with IMG to become the official automotive partner of New York Fashion Week.
BMW hopes the deal will help it “target a new audience within the creative class, a younger target audience and one with more of an urban and creative focus,” according to Uwe Dreher, BMW North America’s vice president of marketing.
While New Yorkers are famously hesitant to enter into car ownership, Dreher feels that, “New York Fashion Week has a broad reach outside the city and even outside the U.S. and we believe we can get in touch with the right people with this property.”
The sponsorship will see BMW equip select VIP influencers, editors, models and buyers with car service to get them from show to show. This fashion week fleet will include BMW’s “most luxurious cars where aesthetics play a key role,” according to Dreher, including the company’s BMW 7 Series sedan and its BMW X7 sports activity vehicle. The car models will also be on display at a BMW-sponsored concierge tent at Spring Studios, which will host VIP arrivals.

Tie Bar to Relocate New York Store

The Tie Bar is relocating its New York store and will open a flagship next week.
The 1,400-square-foot store at 340 Madison Avenue is located near the pop-up-turned-permanent-store it has been operating at 400 Madison Avenue since 2017. The New York flagship will join the company’s stores in its hometown of Chicago as well as recently opened units in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia.
“New York continues to be one of our important markets,” said Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer. “As we’ve grown out of solely being an accessories brand, our stores have proven extremely effective showcasing first-hand all that The Tie Bar has to offer now. When it came time to launch the first flagship outside of our hometown, it was a no-brainer that it would be in New York.”
The store will sport a new design concept that features custom wood fixtures, an outfit-building station and a wedding shop. “Our new store floor plan has been totally reimagined to create an experience that allows our customers to shop from head-to-toe,” Lewis added. “Whether mixing and matching on their own, or working with one of our in-house stylists, we’ve created a space that’s been tailored exactly to our customer’s full style needs.”

Caruso Opens Showroom in New York to Build Brand in U.S.

Caruso has set its sights on the American market.
The Milan-based men’s brand has opened a permanent showroom in Midtown Manhattan and is meeting with specialty and department stores during men’s market this week as it strives to regain a foothold in the U.S.
Spearheading the move is Marco Angeloni, the eldest son of former Brioni chief Umberto Angeloni, who remains an “active shareholder” in the business, according to his son.
Caruso is now majority-owned by Fosun, the company’s Chinese partner since 2013. In 2017, when Fosun purchased the controlling stake from Aplomb Srl, Umberto Angeloni’s holding company with Ruggero Magnoni, Marco Angeloni was elevated to chief executive officer from chief operating officer.
Marco Angeloni, who has also worked at Bain & Co., said his father launched the fashion brand a decade ago and opened flagships in both Milan and New York City. Both those stores have since closed and Umberto Angeloni stepped down as ceo when Fosun became the majority owner. Gone, too, are the brand’s trademark mannequins with handlebar mustaches intended to be reminiscent of its namesake, the singer Enrico Caruso.

Agnona Marks Eternals Collection With New York Dinner

On Wednesday evening, Italian sportswear label Agnona held a private dinner with Bergdorf Goodman to mark the release of its essentials collection — a new range of four-figure wardrobe basics devised by creative director Simon Holloway.
The Waverly Inn’s garden room, with its translucent ceiling, provided dinner guests with a private, cozy viewing of the lightning storm that was covering New York. Poppy Delevingne, the collection’s spokesmodel, turned up in a camel cashmere suit just after the rain began. “It’s warm,” she said of the finely spun goat hair fibers cocooning her in heat-wave temperatures. In the more moderate climate of her native London, however, the model uses Agnona to “wrap myself up and be like a glowworm, which I love.”
Holloway said Eternals was devised as “a very elevated line of tailored clothing, pillars for every wardrobe in navy, black, camel, flannel gray and rosewood — essential pieces that are easy for women to wrap into their lives.” The collection’s suiting, loungewear and knits are meant to appeal to a lifestyle-in-motion — a woman who floats between travel, career and family life.

Hilfiger’s TommyNow Show at the Apollo Theater Marks Return to New York

After traveling the world, Tommy Hilfiger is bringing its TommyNow fashion show back to New York.
On Sept. 8, the company will showcase the fall 2019 Tommy x Zendaya collaborative collection, codesigned by Tommy Hilfiger and global brand ambassador Zendaya, at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The choice of the Apollo Theater confirms a WWD report on Jan. 8.
The show is expected to continue the themes of inclusion, diversity and empowerment that Hilfiger and Zendaya brought to the TommyNow runway show in Paris for spring 2019. That runway show, which paid homage to the 1973 French-U.S. “Battle of Versailles,” featured an all-black cross-generational cast including Grace Jones, Beverly Johnson, Pat Cleveland, Grace Jones, Veronica Webb, Halima Aden, Jourdan Dunn and Winnie Harlow. Roller disco dancers on an illuminated runway warmed up the crowd of more than 1,000 guests.
The Apollo show marks Hilfiger’s return to New York, having shown in the city for fall 2016. Since that initial presentation, the worldwide tour touched down in Los Angeles for spring 2017, London for fall 2017, Milan for spring 2018, Shanghai for fall 2018, and then Paris.

Camera Nazionale della Moda Brings Emerging Fashion Designers to New York

The younger face of Italian fashion will be on display with a special one-day exhibition on Friday at New York’s High Line landmark.
Organized by the Italian fashion chamber’s Camera Club initiative aimed at promoting up-and-coming labels, the exhibit, called “Borders: A Flash of New Italian Fashion,” collects the signature pieces — to be showcased on biodegradable mannequins produced by Bonaveri — of four Italian emerging brands, including M1992, Magliano, United Standard and Vitelli Maglieria Italiana.
The outfits will be immersed into an engaging environment of video projections, tubes, neon and LED lights. In particular, the exhibit will include a video shot in Apulia by emerging film director Francesco Petroni, as well as audio installations by United Standard’s Giorgio Di Salvo, Vitelli Maglieria Italiana’s Mauro Simionato and M1992’s Dorian Stefano Tarantini — all of them dividing their time between fashion and music.

Wardrobe Teams Up With Gregory Hotel in New York

Wardrobe, the peer-to-peer digital marketplace to rent women’s and men’s clothing and accessories from people’s closets, has struck a fashion and sustainability partnership with The Gregory Hotel in New York. This is the first hotel partnership launch for Wardrobe.
The way it works is prior or during a stay at The Gregory at 42 West 35th Street, hotel guests can reserve items from the Wardrobe app, and the items will be delivered to them at their hotel room for the duration of their stay. After wearing, they can leave it in the hotel closet or with the concierge. The partnership begins Monday.
Asked why they decided to partner with Wardrobe, Yaniv Packin general manager of The Gregory, said,  “As a sustainably minded hotel, this partnership with Wardrobe was an exciting opportunity to be a first mover in the industry and offer our guests an unforgettable experience during their stay. “Jeux:” New York City Ballet Plays the Game of Love

Black, white and grey. An imposing opaqueness consumes the David H. Koch Theater, like in an old-fashioned film. Every twist of the palm seems shrouded in darkness and contrast, a silhouetted semblance of reality. The lone gold light adds warmth to the scene, a splash of color in the void. Romance masks emotion so that nothing feels so intimidatingly honest. Like when Audrey Hepburn appeared onscreen, the stage is a mirage, a nostalgic, glamorous, gorgeous rendering of what the world will never be: simply lovely.

And yet it is this simplicity that feels too safe in Kim Brandstrup’s premiere for New York City Ballet. Jeux reminds you of Kurt Vonnegut’s iconic line: “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.” But sometimes you crave that ache, that immediacy. Sometimes you want to feel something — sweet, cruel, fresh, haunting, anything — just to know that you’re alive. Brandstrup won’t offer that kind of narrative; as a former film student at the University of Copenhagen, he’s more invested in a story’s intrigue than its subtext.

On its own, Jeux sparkles, entrenched in a ’50s imagination reminiscent of Gigi and An American in Paris. But on a program beside the season’s other commissions by Myles Thatcher, Robert Binet, Troy Schumacher and Justin Peck, the action seems drained, almost exhausted. There’s none of the novelty of Thatcher’s gender obfuscation, or Binet’s use of space, or Schumacher’s intricate patterning or Peck’s avant-garde vitality. Brandstrup’s piece is a ballet, amidst other ballets, bland in its generality. You can glue your eyes to it for twenty minutes and claim its pleasure. But it probably won’t make you smile from enthusiasm or whimsy.

The curtain opens to a promising image: Sara Mearns standing in a spotlight, a heap of bodies hiding behind her. Amar Ramasar ties a blindfold around her temples, and the game begins. Unlike Vaslav Nijinsky’s original Jeux from 1913, nobody’s really playing tennis; this is a love sport. Mearns is infatuated with Ramasar, who in turn falls mutually for Sterling Hyltin. Adrian Danchig-Waring likes Mearns, who doesn’t notice his affection because she’s obsessed with Ramasar. If anyone hurts, scorned by a partner, it doesn’t feel so urgent. Claude Debussy’s score swells too often and too richly for pain to matter, and you know you’re in a universe where the plot will sort itself out neatly in the end. If Brandstrup intended for Jeux to have any dab of authenticity, he should have chosen a less majestic, dreamy composer.

The work isn’t insignificant — every moment is articulate and stunning, and a few gel so nicely that you can’t distinguish motion from music. When Mearns cascades backwards into awaiting arms, faint, weak, her body hinged at the hips as she’s rotated 360 degrees. When Hyltin seamlessly wanders into a triple piqué turn, her arms plopped in a sassy “V.” When the corps waltzes across the floor and under the moon, popping into lifts in passé, their reflections dancing like phantoms on a scrim. In fact, these shadows are the most interesting part… man-made projections crafted by the human body, distorted and elongated.

Still, when Mearns removes the blindfold from her face and throws it onto Danchig-Waring — the next victim of blinding lust — the symbolism feels empty. Were you supposed to sympathize with Mearns? Was Jeux anything more than a game? What were you — was I — meant to feel? Mearns tumbles into Danchig-Waring, pressed above, slowly melting to lie over him on the ground. She has snatched him as prey, like Ramasar did to her, like your lover did to you and like you’ve probably done to an innocent someone.

Scotch & Soda to Open Additional Stores in New York and Los Angeles

Scotch & Soda is extending its U.S. retail presence.
The Amsterdam-based casual sportswear brand opened a Beverly Hills location this month and will open a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, unit in November.
The Beverly Hills location will be Scotch & Soda’s second Los Angeles shop — it has a store in Venice Beach. The 1,500-square-foot space at 365 North Beverly Drive carries both the men’s and women’s collections. The store features Scotch & Soda’s interior design signatures — brass fittings, glass cabinets and wooden herringbone flooring — with additions including a wall adorned with hanging plants and a facade made from handmade Moroccan tiles.
The Williamsburg store joins Scotch & Soda’s three New York City boutiques. The retailer opened a Greenwich Village shop in May. The 1,800-square-foot Williamsburg unit will be located at 240-242 Bedford Avenue and also carry both the men’s and women’s assortments. The store, which is housed in a former industrial factory hall, will boast high ceilings along with concrete and steel details.
In 2014, the brand recruited Ari Hoffman, previously of Gant and Benetton, to serve as chief executive officer of its U.S. operations. Hoffman was tasked with further developing the retailer’s U.S. business. Scotch & Soda has more than 150 stores

INDIXIA Launches in New York, Hong Kong and London to Follow

ALL IN FOR INDIA: The first New York installment of INDIXIA has launched to help underprivileged children in India who are interested in getting a higher education in fashion, design or cinema.

Pooling international supporters who specialize in fine art, design, fashion. cinema and philanthropy, INDIXIA supports Arts For India, the charity was started by Satish Modi in the U.K. in 2010. The agency receives educational support by the University of the Arts London and the Prince’s Drawing School, London. Through Arts for India’s four-year scholarship program, a donor sponsors one needy student artist at the International Institute of Fine Arts. Each year 100 underprivileged students benefit from the program.

Aiming to help as many impoverished Indian students as possible, Modi said, “By giving them the opportunity to study, they, especially women, can escape arranged marriages. I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower,” writes Andrew S. Comme des Garçons Pocket Shop Opens in New York

HOW CONVENIENT: Pocket, Rei Kawakubo‘s answer to the bodega, lands in New York City today at 112 10th Avenue. Comme des Garçons said it likens the Pocket concept, which launched in Tokyo department stores in 2007, to a modern-day convenience store for “pocket-sized items that you don’t have to think about too much and can buy on a whim.” That means mostly the Play, Wallets and Parfum collections.
Adrian Joffe, president of Comme des Garçons International, said the concept “celebrates the ease, efficiency and affordability of a convenience store.”
This is the first freestanding Pocket in the United States. There are now 30 Pocket shops worldwide in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand, as well as Singapore, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and Melbourne. The company’s Dover Street Market stores also have dedicated Pocket spaces, as does its Comme des Garçons store in Chelsea.

Playboy Names America’s 25 Sexiest Cities, New York Tops The List

Forget the best cities in the country. Playboy magazine released its list ranking America’s 25 Sexiest Cities on Wednesday and we’re already contemplating a move.  

According to the magazine, the list was determined by two separate polls that looked at metrics including nightlife, general lifestyle habits and “an undercurrent of desire.” So it’s not exactly scientific.

New York City ranked #1 on the list, mainly because its residents were into “kinky” things and a LOT of sex. “The people are hot, the sex is prime quality and the frequency is high, averaging 138 times per year,” wrote Playboy. Considering NYC has the Museum of Sex and a topless book club, we have to agree with the ranking.

Singapore to Celebrate Golden Jubilee With New York City Festival

Singapore will celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence with a festival of events in New York City from Sept. 12 through Sept. 27 featuring visual and culinary arts, performances and musical showcases.
SG50 Celebrations, which began in Beijing in April and moved to London in June before heading to New York, will return to Singapore from Nov. 27 to Dec. 6 for the finale.
Retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, and restaurants such as Shake Shack, Lavo and The Meatball Shop, are participating in the Singapore events in Manhattan.
Bergdorf’s will feature a 16-page fashion spread in the September issue of Bergdorf Goodman Magazine in tandem with a special window display featuring Singaporean photographer John Clang’s work for two weeks. Singaporean fare will also be featured at BG Restaurant from Sept. 20 to 27.
Twenty New York restaurants, including DB Bistro Moderne, Red Farm, Market Table, The Clam and The Meatball Shop will also create Singaporean-inspired dishes and cocktails from Sept. 18 to 27. Back-to-School Style: New York City vs. Los Angeles

We had a feeling that teenagers who live on opposite coasts might just rock a slightly different back-to-school style. So we talked to 14 high school students — seven in New York City and seven in Los Angeles — about their overall approach to fashion, where they shop and what they plan to wear when they return to the classroom in the coming weeks. And then we dressed them in an outfit of their choosing from a selection curated by our stylists on both coasts and photographed them on the streets of Williamsburg, N.Y., and West L.A.
A touch of downtown cool — and in some cases, a bit of preppy polish — and always casual. That was the consensus of the teens in the greater New York City area when asked to describe their respective styles at the Williamsburg photo shoot. Ranging in age from 15 to 18, they showed up in their own outfits — the boys in khakis and polos, the girls in a mix of skinny jeans or shorts with T-shirts and dresses — before being styled in b-t-s looks that suited their fashion preferences.
The students attend a mix of public, private and performing arts high schools.

Will the Dandy Man Play at New York Fashion Week: Men’s?

At the packed Dior Homme after party in the wee hours during the Paris Men’s Collections, straight models mingled with transgender men and women while gay models dressed in jeans and T-shirts rubbed shoulders with their straight counterparts — who were wearing skirts or dresses.
Confused? Well, if you are, just think how designers feel. As New York Fashion Week: Men’s gets set to begin on July 13, there are conflicting cyclones whirling through the world of men’s wear — and designers are struggling to figure out which wind to catch. One part of the market remains centered on what has become men’s wear tradition — suits, jackets, pants and sportswear that are firmly masculine — while the other is pushing the boundaries of what modern men’s wear is all about, mixing skirts in with pants, adding lace or other embellishments that in the past would have been considered feminine, and often times putting both sexes on their runways so observers don’t know which is which.
On the one hand, the New Dandy Man is not exactly new — think the New Romantics of the early Eighties, Michael Jackson, David Bowie or Keith Richards — or, going back further in time, Oscar
