Steve Young questions one Kyle Shanahan decision in 49ers’ Super Bowl loss

With seven minutes to play in Super Bowl LIV, the 49ers appeared to be on their way to a night spent bathing in confetti and champagne in Miami. Then, everything unraveled as the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points to give head coach Andy Reid his first Super Bowl title. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan drew the brunt of the criticism for his fourth-quarter play-calling that saw him put the ball in the hands of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo rather than rely on San Francisco's powerful run game.

Exclusive: Gabriela Hearst to Sponsor Frick Young Fellows Ball

Gabriela Hearst will be the sponsor of this year’s Young Fellows Ball at the Frick Museum, to take place at the museum on March 12.
The annual black-tie event has previously been sponsored by brands like Altuzarra, Escada and Carolina Herrera.
“The museum is obviously a New York institution,” Hearst says. “To be able to have a record of the past in a way — there are not many Gilded Age mansions left. And I am someone who believes that to understand the future you have to learn from the past.”
Hearst, who came to the museum on her first trip to New York, when she was 18 years old — “so we’re talking ancient history” — says that supporting an institution like the museum is important to her as a source of inspiration.
“From a craft perspective and a visual simulation perspective, I find it one of the most rewarding places in the world.”
The brand typically focuses charitable efforts on Save the Children and Our Children’s Trust. “My personal focus is children and the environment, so the future,” says Hearst. “But Wes Gordon is a friend and Paul Arnold invited us to do this and I really like them, so it’s a pleasure.”

Vetements Planning Platform to Support Young Talent, Offer Scholarships, Coworking Space

Guram Gvasalia, cofounder and chief executive officer of the Zurich-based fashion house Vetements, is on a mission to help foster young talent.
In a talk with Miles Socha at WWD’s Apparel & Retail CEO Summit Wednesday morning at the InterContinental New York Barclay hotel, he spoke of creating a platform next year that will support young designers. His plans include setting up a coworking space within his company’s offices, traveling to schools to speak with students about the realities of working in the fashion industry and offering scholarships.
Emphasizing the importance of how success is a collective effort, Gvasalia addressed the misconception that a brand is defined by one talented designer. “Most of the time it’s probably not one person who is designing the brand. No, at the big brands, they have 60 people under the designer,” he said.
From his point of view what makes a brand involves putting everything together. “You need to have the designers, the developers — it’s a job that nobody really teaches about. But it is extremely important. There is hierarchy in my company that is more than a design job. Milan Puts Spotlight on Young Talents

YOUNG GUNS: Milan’s Palazzo Morando on Wednesday evening was lit up for two back-to-back events hinging on fashion’s generation next: “Empower Talents 3,” hosted by Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani and Kering chairman and ceo François-Henri Pinault, a project that offers internships at the luxury brands that are part of the French group in Italy; and the “Who is On Next? and Vogue Talents” happening, also hosted by Sozzani.
“It’s always beautiful to channel the energy of youth and work with new talents,” said Carlo Capasa, president of the Italian chamber of fashion.
“I came earlier to Milan to check out the new designers,” said Laudomia Pucci. “It’s our duty not only to find them but to help them.” How did she feel about the debut show of Massimo Giorgetti at the helm of Emilio Pucci on Thursday? “Very confident,” she grinned.
Salvatore Ferragamo’s Massimiliano Giornetti was taking a break from putting the finishing touches to his collection, to be shown on Sunday.
“It’s all ready and done,” countered Anna Molinari about her own lineup. Giambattista Valli, Lapo Elkann, siblings Alberta and Massimo Ferretti, Moncler’s Remo Ruffini, Sara Battaglia, and Elena Ghisellini also attended.

Not Like Most Young Girls

Not Like Most Young Girls

18 True Stories from the Urban UnderbellySex work-the world’s oldest profession. A world of shadows and sleaze. Of faceless, nameless individuals. Walking and talking bodies dolled up in glittering clothes and deceiving make-up, flashing frozen smiles, willing to sell themselves for a square meal. But carrying within them tarnished souls and fractured dignities. Not Like Most Young Girls is a collection of short stories written by young minds from eminent educational institutions from Mumbai, presenting before society the human beings hidden within the sex workers. These are stories of women, men and hijras who have come together under Aastha Parivaar. Not Like Most Young Girls is more than a book-it is an attempt to bring out of the shadows, these individuals who breathe, feel, and give back to society, just as any one of us do-or perhaps more.

Nicaragua’s Young Designers Eye Expansion

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Nicaraguan emerging designers Shantall Lacayo and Ana Alexandra Velazquez are aiming to tap overseas markets by showing at Paris’ Who’s Next in September.
Lacayo, who has sales of $ 80,000 a year, hopes to open 12 points of sale over the next three to five years, with tentative plans to market in Paris, Dubai, Miami, Los Angeles and New York.
In the near-term, she hopes to open doors in Honduras and El Salvador to take her count beyond her current four points of sale in Nicaragua and Panama. Further into the future, she hopes to enter the U.S. and Europe.
“I would love to find an agent to represent me in Paris and one day sell in Bloomingdale’s or Saks [Fifth Avenue],” said Lacayo, who also helps direct the Nicaragua Diseña trade fair, which has an expanding fashion wing that also showcases other design talents.
Lacayo, who was second finalist in the 2010 edition of “Project Runway Latin America,” hopes her spring 2016 will attract attention at Porte de Versailles.
Dubbed “Gypsy Goddess,” the collection features several embroidered dresses inspired by the Nicaraguan genciana flower and featuring geometric and Cubist prints evoking the Seventies. The most popular item has been a handmade, dark-blue nylon-mesh gown

Scoring Big With Prolific Young Film Composer Giona Ostinelli

Like many, I can get obsessive about film music. But long gone are Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Henry Mancini, even John Barry and the astounding Jerry Goldsmith. We just lost the often excellent James Horner. Meanwhile, John Williams is kinda busy with some little Disney project with lightsabers in it. And upstarts like Anne Dudley, Danny Elfman, Herbie Hancock and Hans Zimmer have become established elders. Thus do I scan the horizon for fresh talent.

2015-08-28-1440798324-3299641-Gionainstudio.jpg

Giona Ostinelli

Currently my ear has landed upon Giona Ostinelli, a Swiss composer working in Hollywood, a mere 29 years old but with an impressive 25 feature films to his credit, plus assorted short films (over 30 during just nine months studying at USC!) and new-media projects. You can hear Giona’s work this week in POD, a horror shocker by director Mickey Keating, opening in 10 cities and via VOD. While PODPOD on VOD, that’s catchy — showcases Giona’s gift for eerie tension-building, it wasn’t until I visited his studio that the delightful diversity of the young composer’s palette was revealed. He began by screening and playing his upbeat, aw-shucks, orchestral opening for Arnold Grossman’s The Boat Builder (starring Christopher Lloyd) — and I was like, wait, you’re the same guy? You’re not about just one screechy-spooky note?

“With POD, for the ending, I wrote this piece for a choir,” explains Giona of his efficient 2 1/2-week process of scoring the horror, “and Mickey didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know either, because I got to the end of the movie, and I was sick and tired of hearing my sounds, I wanted something different! So I said, ‘how about a choir?’ I sent it to Mickey, I said, ‘Mickey, you’re allowed to hate me for what I’ve done with the ending — because it’s totally different from the rest.’ So I sent it to him, and he was like, ‘that’s an awesome surprise!’ He didn’t expect it, and it worked great.”

Talking POD

Indeed, viewing POD — which is not unlike a meaner, scarier, extended X-Files episode (two siblings check on their brother in a secluded Maine house: and what they find ain’t pretty) — one does not sit around thinking “choir” — and right away, that’s the aura of Giona: an innovator. He seems to have “surprise” coded into his DNA. I ask about scoring horror — does the director impose certain obligatory stings and so forth?

“He always invites me to his place,” says Giona of Mickey, “to his editing bay, and then he shows me the film. He’s like, ‘Here’s my idea, roughly, how it is — just take it, and surprise me!’ So I was working on it, and he has these flashbacks, and I was like, ‘Why don’t we try to do something cool?’ I know that sound design is going to cover that, to a certain extent — but when I watch a film, and I see that type of thing, I would like it to be pressing! (Giona makes a disturbing mouth noise) So I was like, why not take the chance and do it?”

2015-08-28-1440798466-1261901-MickeynGiona.jpg

Mickey Keating and Giona Ostinelli

This attitude serves Giona well — he takes the chance and does it — and he and I enthuse over our love of Dave Grusin’s winning score for The Goonies: which, it turns out, inspired us both to rush headlong toward the arts. Heh.

“I remember, when I was a kid, saying, ‘I want to do this!'” gushes Giona. “I started playing drums when I was five, piano when I was almost nine, doing choir when I was 16, playing in many bands — metal bands, rock bands, blues bands, jazz trio — you can see in the types of films I do, I always do different genres. (laughs) I always wanted to do film music, but growing up in Switzerland, it’s not a career choice. In Switzerland you either become a banker, a lawyer, or a doctor.”

Or Jung, I add (though that job application proves fairly stringent).

“Or a watchmaker!” adds Giona’s concert-pianist partner — and we all grin knowingly: watches — how 20th-century!

2015-08-28-1440798583-144029-Gionavan.jpg

I elicit a laugh from Giona by imitating the beloved Danny Elfman style (conveniently: “Oompa-Loompa, Oompa-Loompa…”), and he admits he’s a big soundtrack buff, raving up Thomas Newman: “His sounds are so amazing,” he says, emphasizing Saving Mr. Banks, “but for some reason, I love tons of his scores, but that one! Thomas Newman, you listen to him, it’s very simple, and it sounds great. Then you go to Hans Zimmer, he has 200 tracks, it sounds great — a completely different style.”

Giona is practically gasping as he enthuses: “I like listening to scores, and I buy so many! How did they get this sound?!”

Giona Ostinelli’s Soundcloud

On cue, Mickey shows up to join his composer (see videos for the guys in action), and the two rave up their partnership on POD but also Ritual (2013) and the forthcoming Darling (2015). “We’ve known each other for so long,” says the world-weary 25-year-old, “that the whole process is really creative. I feel like so much of the process of working with composers and editors, there’s this learning curve. But me and Giona can just riff back and forth.”

“And also, the cool thing about Mickey,” adds Giona, “not many people do this, but working with Mickey is like family. It’s always the same editor, same sound designer, same cinematographer, and we all know each other. It’s so cool! You feel part of a family, and you’re not afraid to experiment.”

“Yeah, it’s great,” agrees Mickey. “And I mean, it really helps create a process. It doesn’t seem so formal. The movies are all sort of hand-made and home-grown, and that’s what’s exciting about them.”

Talking Darling

“I’m finishing Darling, and Mickey’s finishing editing Carnage Park,” chimes in Giona, contrasting both the visuals and sounds of the former (lensed in New York), and the latter (lensed in the California desert).

“What’s great about it is they’re such different films,” adds Mickey. “Darling‘s so weird, but classical and ambient, and Carnage Park‘s like a Peckinpah western with the sensibilities of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and stuff. So they’re all different subgenres of horror, and it’s so cool to be able to have somebody who can just do it all!” Mickey gestures to his friend, Giona.

2015-08-28-1440798657-1349461-Gionabw.jpg

“I’m sure that if I wouldn’t try to push myself,” sums up Giona, “to do drama, to do comedies, dark comedies, trying to do a romantic film or Christmas film–“

Two Christmas films,” I remind him.

“–two Christmas films. If I wouldn’t try to push myself, and go to places that I’m afraid of, that I’m not comfortable in, then I wouldn’t be so good even in the horror genre. But because I always try to explore as much as possible, then everything becomes useful.”

POD is now playing in select theaters, and on VOD.

Young Royals Head to Portsmouth for America’s Cup World Series

ROYAL RAIN OUT: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed to Portsmouth, England, to support Olympic gold medalist Sir Ben Ainslie and his crew who are participants in the America’s Cup World Series race. While inclement weather caused the race to be called off, that didn’t put off the young royals, who donned matching navy fleece jackets bearing their names on the back. The duo visited and took a tour of the royal naval base and met with the staff and team crews.
Avid sailors, the Duchess is a royal patron of the 1851 Trust, and the Duke and Duchess have raced each other in Team New Zealand America’s Cup yachts last year.

Young Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff To Be Helmed By ‘Lego Movie’ Directors

“Star Wars” and Legos were practically made for each other, as the “Force Awakens” Lego remake trailer proved. And now, the duo behind “The Lego Movie” are headed to a galaxy far, far away.

On Tuesday, StarWars.com announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team best known for the Oscar-nominated animated film, will direct a ”Star Wars” anthology film. The directors, who were also behind “21 Jump Street, “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will direct a stand-alone film based on a young Han Solo. The spinoff, written by Lawrence Kasdan (“The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “The Force Awakens”) and Jon Kasdan (“The First Time”), will reveal how Han Solo became the “smuggler, thief, and scoundrel” we first met at the Mos Eisley Cantina.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Lord and Miller said in StarWars.com’s press release. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” Well said.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a Han Solo origin film, which was first rumored two years ago, was reportedly going to be one of the first films in the “Star Wars” anthology series. However, “Rogue One” from director Gareth Edwards, was pushed up as the first spinoff so as not to confuse fans after Harrison Ford’s appearance in “The Force Awakens.”

Before the young Han Solo spinoff hits theaters on May 25, 2018, there’s lots of “Star Wars” to look forward to. J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens” will open Dec. 18, followed by “Rogue One” on Dec. 16, 2016. There’s also the second “Star Wars” stand-alone film, which director Josh Trank left in May, as well as a separate rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off

Forever Young: Rock and Roll As the Antidote to Aging

2015-06-23-1435073354-1147303-guitarman.jpg

A few weeks ago I was visiting a friend in Los Angeles who had recently retired after a lifetime of working in the music industry. Before my visit I had spotted her in a documentary film about an iconic recording session in the 1980s with some of the top names in the business. When we met for coffee, I complemented her on how she hadn’t changed since then. After comparing notes on old friends, the decline of society and our current situations we agreed that rock music was still a vital element in our lives and how the music managed to transcend generations. And more importantly, it had the quality to keep us young.

A recent article in the Huffington Post illustrated how musical tastes become fixed by the time one reaches the end of their twenties. Which for a lot of the older public means that bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones are the musical markers from their youth. There is now even a whole genre of music and a weekly radio show called ‘dad rock’ to deliver to these fans the music they want to hear. With a label like that, Generation X, Y and Z are sometimes turned off as it implies easy listening, parental values and people stuck in the past, but in fact, the music appears on their iDevice playlists nonetheless.

So if ones music tastes are fixed in their twenties, does that mean every time you hear a song from that stage in your life those memory cells are activated? Do our thoughts turn to more simple times and our DNA tingles with a youthful charge? Is the mental flexibility and openness of our youth reawakened, while the idealistic values of those times are remembered?
And for today’s generation — do they find the music interesting, antique or somehow relevant the same way a generation ago, jazz music held a certain magic but is now quasi-classic?

In contemporary music there is a lot of awareness of songs from the dad generation in the sampling of snippets of songs from the 70s and 80s. Artists like Puff Daddy (or whatever incarnation he goes by now) won a Grammy award with a song borrowing from that 80’s band the Police, with I’ll Be Missing You. Even Pharrell Wiliams number one song Blurred Lines had to recently pay millions in royalties for appropriating from a Marvin Gaye song from the 70’s. And one of my favorites homages to old time rock and roll is Kid Rock’s summer anthem All Summer Long where he uses two songs from the ’70s, starting with Werewolves in London and morphing into Sweet Home Alabama.

In my novel Coast Highway, a Romeo and Juliet story set in the 1970s Silicon Valley (released this fall), I reference sixty-two different bands and songs, which I have turned into Spotify and YouTube playlists. Trolling through all the versions of songs, concert footage and MTV videos from those times was a nostalgic trip for me down memory lane that put a smile on my face. Some of the videos were so campy you would think they were a Saturday Night Live comedy act, when in fact it was the style of the times. And this summer a lot of fashion houses are pushing hippie couture complete with bell-bottom jeans. The past is reinvented again and again.

An unbelievable number of older acts are touring these days with the dubious label dinosaur rock attached to particularly grey haired performers. Last year Fleetwood Mac was on the road again and my son had bought me a ticket to one of their shows as a birthday present. The old rockers played close to three hours non-stop and generated such a high energy level that even my son was impressed. It was surprising, considering he is more used to semi-underground bands from the States. The audience was an even mix of ‘dad rockers’ and people from their teens upwards. The band had become iconic and as living legends became a ‘must see’ act.

The British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge once said:

‘The pursuit of happiness, which American citizens are obliged to undertake, tends to involve them in trying to perpetuate the moods, tastes and aptitudes of youth.’

If Malcolm was correct, then not only the dad rockers looking to remain forever young but the younger generation curious about the magical elixir rock and roll offers should give the music and more in-depth listen. Perhaps it will give them a double dose of youthful energy with an unexpected depth.
So if good old rock and roll is alive and well in our music channels and individual playlists, then why try to categorize it as dad rock, which is generally seen as a critical designation implying premature senility with a well-developed dose of tinnitus. So lets skip the labels, get rocking and knock a few years off our lives.

17 Timeless Books Our Dads Read To Us When We Were Young

Reading to a squirming child can be a bit of a chore, especially the kind of child who demands to hear Goodnight Moon five times every night for a year and a half. Still, it’s one of the most rewarding ways parents can spend time with their little ones: fostering a love of books, cuddling, and creating lifelong memories. For parents who spend their days at work, the bedtime story can be a particularly cherished tradition.

With Father’s Day on the horizon, we wanted to remember the times our dads took the time to read a favorite book to us when we were small. Some of our dads read us Seuss, and some read us sci-fi, but one thing is for sure — we all remember the books our fathers read with us, and the joy those story times brought to our childhoods.

Below, in no particular order, HuffPosters recall the books their dads shared with them growing up. Tell us about your favorite childhood memory of reading with your dad in the comments!

1. The Hobbit

hobbit

No offense to Andy Serkis, but you haven’t heard the true voice of Gollum unless you were there when my dad read The Hobbit and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy aloud to my brothers and me when we were little. He’s an English professor, not a voice actor, but he got into the performance aspect with gusto, and even 20 years later, I can hear his Gollum impression in my mind’s ear. Unfortunately when he tried Watership Down, the bedtime reading tradition fell apart — we couldn’t get on board with warring bunnies — but I’ll always love that he looked at us three kids, all well under the age of 10, and thought, “Yep, it’s time to tell them a story about a faceless evil power bringing an end to life as we’d like to know it.” Thanks, Dad. -Claire Fallon, Culture Writer

2. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

mike mulligan

Before he retired, my dad was an electrician in New York City, a job that is full of tough guys doing physical labor. I wonder if him reading Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel to me and my siblings sticks out in my mind now because it gave a humanlike face and feelings to heavy-duty machinery, much like the kind I imagined my father working with all day. It brought my dad and his looming 6-foot-6-inch stature down to our level figuratively and literally, because I think we’d usually pile around him on one of our beds or the living room couch when a reading was happening. Today, I wonder if turning the beloved steam shovel into a furnace (spoilers!!!) really was the best plot resolution, but it still stands. Or that’s just my childhood nostalgia speaking. -Jillian Capewell, Entertainment News Editor

3. The Lorax

lorax

My dad used to read The Lorax to me all the time when I was little. I’m not entirely sure why we got so into it — it must’ve just been Dr. Seuss’s entrancing meter and repetition that kept bringing us back to it. To this day we’ll still sometimes say to each other “Those trees! Those trees! Those truffula trees!” -Alexandra Svokos, College & Education Fellow

4. Father and Daughter Tales

father daughter tales

My dad and I used to always read Father and Daughter Tales before I went to bed. When he was tired, he would sometimes skip parts of the story, but I had the entire book memorized, so I always caught him. When he would finish reading, he would always ask me, “So, what’s the moral of the story?” And sometimes, when we couldn’t track down Father and Daughter Tales he would read me Mother and Daughter Tales! -Michelle Persad, Fashion Editor

5. Hop On Pop

pop

When I was really little (2 to 4 years old) and learning to read, my dad and I would read Hop On Pop by Dr. Seuss. Well, he would read it me and use his finger to point to the words. I technically couldn’t actually read what was on the pages, but I memorized the book. Then, being inspired by the message of the book, I would subsequently attempt to hop on pop. -Eva Hill, Video Editor and Lead Animator

6. Miss Nelson Is Missing!

nelson

One of my fondest memories with my dad is when he used to read books to my sister, brother, and I. Some of the books that were a part of that childhood memory are Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger and Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, which both hold special places in my heart. But our ultimate favorite that Dad would read was Miss Nelson Is Missing! by Harry Allard. Why? Because as my dad puts it, “You guys were really surprised that the mean substitute teacher was Miss Nelson!” -Jacqueline Howard, Associate Editor, HuffPost Science

7. Officer Buckle and Gloria

gloria

When I was little, my dad would read to me every night before bed. One of my favorite books we read together was Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann. It’s the story of a police officer who tours the town of Napville teaching kids about safety. (The name “Napville” never struck me as odd before now … possibly because nap time was always a mandatory Williams family activity). Officer Buckle’s presentation receives a little spice with the addition of Gloria, a police dog with a penchant for dramatics. As Officer Buckle lists off his safety tips, Gloria acts out each potential catastrophe behind him, delighting their young audience. The story is funny, heartwarming, and features an acting dog, so basically I was in little-kid heaven. Even so, I’d often ask my dad to “read it funny,” at which point he’d go off-script and make up a nonsensical story, complete with voices and silly faces. I would laugh hysterically. And even after all this time, I still live by Officer Buckle’s Safety Tip #77: Never stand on a swivel chair. -Abigail Williams, Associate Social Media Editor

8. Frog and Toad Are Friends

frog

My dad would read Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad Are Friends to me and my sister — in particular the story “A Lost Button,” in which Toad loses a button off his jacket, and then he and Frog search for it. They find a bunch of buttons, but none of them are Toad’s. When my dad read us the story, he would read Toad’s dialogue with a mounting, apoplectic rage that I’m pretty sure Lobel didn’t include in the original version. “That is not my button,” my dad would snarl in Toad’s voice. “That button is SQUARE. My button is ROUND.” Obviously, hearing Toad grow closer and closer to snapping completely and murdering his best friend was, to me and my sister, the funniest thing in the world. -Alexander Eichler, News Editor

9. Tom Brown’s School Days

tom

My dad read a book out loud to me and my brother that no one has ever mentioned since to me: Tom Brown’s School Days. Never heard of it? That’s because your parent did not grow up in freshly independent India, in the shadow of the British Raj. Frankly, I don’t remember much about the actual story beyond a blur of boys and green fields. (A quick Wikipedia skim tells me the semi-autobiography was set in a country school in England — Rugby School — where in the early 1800s the book’s author, Thomas Hughes, got schooled). What I do remember is the Pavlovian thrill the sight of that worn and stark blue cover — no illustrations — stirred in me each night my dad brought it down from the shelf. This was the end of the day, the only time where I actually knew precisely where we all were for a stretch of time. It could have been any book. -Mallika Rao, Culture Reporter

10. The Napping House

napping house

My dad Kevin didn’t just read stories — The Napping House by Audrey Wood was always in the rotation — he was also amazing at making them up. “The Four Bears and The Red Bud Berries” was a favorite for my three siblings and me. Now he reads to and makes up stories for my kids, Eli and Henry, and man oh man, it melts my heart. -Katie Nelson, National Editor

11. Day of Infamy

infamy

I know what you’re thinking: A 1957 non-fiction book about the attack on Pearl Harbor isn’t exactly sentimental. Bear with me. My father, a surgeon, worked very long hours. But he always made time for me — on weekends, at nights before I went to sleep — and he liked nothing more than sharing his vast knowledge about history. He got that knowledge from books, most of which he kept in the library that was across the hallway from my bedroom.

It’s still there, with deep brown wood bookcases that go from floor to ceiling, only now he’s had to pile the books two deep in some places. He’d also taken over the shelves in another part of the house, much to my poor mother’s occasional dismay. But I get it. The library was the room that always made me happiest. I’d sit there for hours, plucking titles off the shelves and flipping through them in my father’s beat-up recliner chair.

Day of Infamy was one of the first “adult” books I could read as a kid. I must have gone through it a dozen times, which seems weird until you put yourself in the mind of an 11- or 12-year-old. Reading it made me feel grown-up. It made me feel like Dad. And that made me feel good. By the way, I’ve tried hard to carry on that tradition with my own two boys, both of whom hang out in my library and, before bed, demand that I give them history lessons. I’m not sure how much they like the history and how much they just like hanging out with me. But I don’t really care and I imagine my father has always felt the same way. -Jonathan Cohn, Senior National Correspondent

12. Make Way For Ducklings

duck

I have fond memories of reading a number of “vintage” books with my dad when I was little. One of our favorites was Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. It’s a book that’s been around for a while, but the black-and-white drawings are still packed with action. I remember appreciating how the policemen went out of their way to assist the ducks and keep them safe during their journey to the pond. And when I visited Boston many years later, I was excited to see the statues of the Mallard family in Boston Common. Seeing them brought back memories of the many evenings my dad and I spent sharing the ducklings’ story together. -Sara Bondioli, Deputy Politics Editor

13. The Call of the Wild

wild

In middle school we had to read The Call of the Wild, which literally bored me to tears. To encourage me, my dad promised to read every chapter with me — he even took notes. At the end of the chapters we’d sit down and discuss what had happened and what we thought would happen next. Though it’s far from being one of my favorite books, I sort of like it, because without reading it, I would have never had that bonding experience with my dad. -Yagana Shah, Huff/Post50 Associate Editor

14. Into the Land of the Unicorns

unicorns

My dad demonstrated incredible patience in repeatedly reading first-grade me a novel called Into the Land of the Unicorns. It involved a young girl who got magically transported into a bizarre unicorn-inhabited land to deliver a secret message to the queen unicorn. Needless to say, this was probably not riveting reading material for a man in his 40s, but my dad persevered with enthusiasm and a (semi-limited) range of voices for different characters. -Hilary Hanson, Crime and Weird News Editor

15. Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop

curious george

When I was little, I loved reading Curious George with my dad. The most memorable book from the series is Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop. It indulged my love of ice cream while instilling the importance of patronizing local businesses, even if the owners are a little crabby. -Katelyn Bogucki, Multimedia Producer

16. Ender’s Game

ender

I never was that into science fiction (not much has changed), but somehow, when I was in elementary school, my dad coaxed me into reading Ender’s Game, one of the many Orson Scott Card books he read. I loved it, and have probably read it a dozen times since. Looking back, it’s no surprise a story about a student chosen for a special adventure to save the world appealed to a daydreamy, bookish kid — it’s actually just like Harry Potter, if Harry Potter had futuristic technology of the ‘80s instead of magic and a space station instead of a wizard school. At the time, I loved having something to bond over with my dad, and also read all of the (much more boring) sequels for that reason. Now, I’m grateful that he taught me the rewards of being adventurous in my reading and otherwise, pushed me to take chances on the unfamiliar and took the time to share something he genuinely loved with his daughter. -Kate Abbey-Lambertz, Detroit Editor

17. The Golden Compass

compass

I grew up in a family that loved science fiction and fantasy, so one of the first books that I remember bonding with my dad about with was The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. The protagonist Lyra was a fearless, talkative girl who was highly intelligent and loved adventure. That book was the beginning of our love for other fantasy and young adult books — including Harry Potter, Stargirl and The Lord of the Rings. Because Father’s Day and my birthday happen around the same time every year, it’s a special time for my dad and I to talk to each other about books and what we’re reading — as well as our love of reading. The written word has evolved from handwritten letters to words on a page to texting — and I wouldn’t trade the evolution of my relationship with my dad and our love of reading for anything. -Madeline Wahl, Blogs & Community Associate Editor

BONUS: Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem

fermat

When I was about 11, my dad, an engineer with a sick sense of humor, informed me that if I wanted to return to camp that summer, I would have to read and report on Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem, the scintillating, true tale of a mathematician doing … math stuff. I have no idea if my dad was actually trying to get me interested in something he enjoyed, or was just playing a cruel parenting joke. While I complained and put it off ’til the last minute, I did read the entire thing, and I think I understood it. I maybe even secretly enjoyed the historical drama parts, but now I can remember the taunting image of Fermat’s face on the cover of Simon Singh’s book better than I could explain what an + bn = cn means. Still, this story is one of my favorites about me and my dad, one of the most revealing about our relationship and bound to crack us up if we retell it. -Kate Abbey-Lambertz, Detroit Editor

The Young Man That Challenged Death

The reason that made me write this book is the following. I been walking for over 20 years over a dark path in my life. I want to send a messege to all the children that had been abuse around the world. For them to belive on their self because on the end of the path their is a special light for each of them. I also want to explain a bit about all the despites of all our Central American brothers that risk everything to get to the United States. Many adventures many pathways we went through. Mamy mothers cried for what had been there treasures. Dreams that have been impossible. To the friends who have been on the path are remembering with respect and affection. In memory of its people will live. My name is Santos Chavez I was born in Honduras on, July,2,1983. I travel to the United States when I was 10 years old. Now I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have 2 childrens I am divorce. I work as a electrition seens I was 14 years old. I inspired my self to write this book for so many things I been through live. Forever Bleeker Street, Forever Young

In 1961, at 17 years old, I moved into a floor thru pink brownstone on the corner of Bleeker and Jones Street in the West Village of New York City. It was heaven. There were cozy woodsy cafe houses on every street corner, The Figaro, The Fat Black Pussycat, The Gaslight Cafe. They were filled with college students listening to a brand new sound, folk singing.

2015-06-15-1434333442-8015691-image.jpeg

The small Bleeker Street shops were stocked with goods from other folksy artists, either designing beatnick clothing, African ethnic jewelry or middle eastern patchwork home furnishings, including mirrored pillows and bongo drums. The Look was changing from sleek 50’s post modern to a new Look called WHATEVER …..as long as it shakes and sparkles. Everything in these shops (now called “boutiques), looked and felt brand new with a new vibe, a vibe that sang of love, of freedom, and a vibe that reeked of sex.

The Village and it’s cool inhabitants had also just discovered marajuana, that we all called POT.

Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, William de Kooning all hung out at the Cedar Street Tavern on University Place picking up all the wistful, young, long haired girls. Woody Allen and Lenny Bruce, performed at the Cafe Wha while picking up all the busty NYU literary scholars they could handle. Bob Dylan, still Bobby Zimmerman, sang at the Cafe Wha and I passed the hat for him and Fred Neil, our singer songwriter star ( who had launched Dylan).

2015-06-15-1434333544-5747521-image2.jpeg

I attended Parsons School of Design launching a brand, Fonssagrives -Tiel with my future partner, Mia Fonssagrives. My coffeehouse name was Peaches La Tour, a name given to me by Steve De Naut, my Cafe Wha folk singing sweetheart. Steve was the father of future actress Rosanna Arquette, then Lisa De Naut. To catch his eye I created see thru lace mini dresses, crochet tops and wrap skirts all styles that are sold again today in the Bleeker St shops.

2015-06-15-1434334029-7808069-image3.jpeg

In my pink brownstone I also sewed and sold fringed suede vests, skirts and handbags with my 6 inch fringe often beaded. The artists and folk singers I met in the cafés bought my clothes, especially my black or forrest green skin tight leather pants. Every which way you turned you felt you were in the center of the happening universe. The boring” Father Knows Best” fifties were a thing of the past.

Today in 2015 at 71, both my age numbers and myself have reversed. I have returned once again to live near Bleeker St but in the the East Village, not the West Village and after spending 45 years in the posh upper east side on E 63rd St making custom gowns for VIP’s at Bergdorf Goodman, I once again am wandering the streets that so inspired me at 17. I prefer the East side as my beloved Cafe Figaro is now an ice cream chain.

I stay today in NYC with my dear Parsons classmate artist, Mary Alice Orito, who was just named President of NAWA, the oldest association of women artists. In 1961 Mary Alice worked at Margaret Moore on 8th st selling hippy chic jewelry, while a student, a block away from my brownstone my hippy-home-brick walled shop.

QUELLE COINCIDENCE…suddenly sixties and seventies fashion is back in Vogue and back downtown and so am I, and so is Mary Alice.

Our favorite hangout today is Agozar a Cuban cafe on 324 Bowery on the corner of Bleeker St in the East Village. Not only is it an outdoor people watching heaven, it also has Tapas to perfection and it has the city’s best Piña Colata, topped sky high with toasted coconut. We can sit for two hours and see all of the cities fashion finest. In my youth the Bowery was a no-no, a no-go.

2015-06-15-1434334094-6449764-image4.jpeg

Fine Art had moved across town to the East Village and Bleeker St now houses one of the cities best contemporary galleries, Zurcher Gallery, at 33 Bleeker. They hold a mini art fair twice a year. The gallery is also also in Paris.

In the posh West Village under the Highline uptown artists and their expensive galleries have moved downtown from 57th st and escaped the high dollar rents which had made newly discovered artists unaffordable. Now galleries are moving across town to the East Village allowing even more unknown creative artists to display their work.

Salon Zurcher had a fabulous show highlighted by the Benischek Giant Levi Jacket, called “New Day Rising”. It caught my eye.

2015-06-15-1434334766-87633-image5.jpeg

The blue jean, is the only item of clothing worn nonstop from the sixties until today. Brad Benischek, a New Orleans artist, whose work will then be featured in Brooklyn at David Dixon’s Cathouse FUNeral Gallery is a man after my heart combining fashion and art.

If you are to buy only one item today on Bleeker St, it has to be a sixties brown floppy hat. The place to go is City Hats on 63 Bleeker St. No other item so captures the feeling of the Bleeker St vibe then a floppy brown hat, be it summer or winter the hat said it all, we were easy breezy, we were cool.

Debutaunt Examines Traditional Rites of Passage While Encouraging Young Women to Find Their Voice

2015-05-26-1432665164-4159256-ARMWRESTLE.jpg

I’m sitting in an airy warehouse in Red Hook Brooklyn filled with plush white beach-house furniture, rustic chandeliers, and freshly cut dogwood branches. The space is an old converted ice cream factory used for weddings and other events but will soon be transformed into a charming ballroom for a new immersive show, Debutaunt. Director and choreographer of the show, Mary John Frank, twirls and moves swiftly in front of me as she maps out the three act structure of the immersive dance-based show. Between rehearsals she takes a beat to sit down and answer a few questions.

TR: Tell us a bit about Debutaunt. What is it?

MJF: Debutaunt is an interactive dance-based show where audiences are invited to attend a debutante ball. Guests are divided into teams or “families” and encouraged to root for a specific debutante. Thematically the show explores coming of age rituals, tradition, and the notion of being presented or being on display.

TR: Why is the title of the show Debutaunt and not Debutante? Tell us about the “taunt” part of title.

MJF: The show pokes fun at the notion of arrival. In my twenties I had the mentality that, “when I get this job, or that boyfriend, or when I make more money, then my life can start!”. I was living in the future and missing the good stuff that was right in front of me. When I learned that we actually never arrive, that life is a process, things became more interesting and I was able to show up for my art and the people in my life in a more genuine way. The joke, or taunt, is on the debutante characters who are future tripping and waiting for specific milestones, in this case their “debut”, in order to feel validated.

TR: What inspired the concept and how did this show come to be?

MJF: About a year and a half ago I saw The Glass Menagerie on Broadway starring Cherry Jones. I was particularly moved when Amanda put on her old debutante dress and entertained Laura and the gentleman caller. The image of Cherry Jones in the debutante dress performing heightened feminine gestures stuck with me as did themes in the play like time, aging, and memory. Shortly after seeing the performance, I went home to Texas for the holidays and experimented with some movement in my old debutante dress. My parents were concerned! The experiment turned into a short dance film called Lady in Waiting, and making that short allowed me to dig into the themes and choreography for Debutaunt.

We did our first run of the show last October at King’s County Bourbon Distillery and audiences seemed genuinely interested in the experience and the concept. This was really exciting to us, and when an opportunity came up to do the show again we decided to go for it with the goal of strengthening the narrative and deepening the characters.

The night quickly devolves into competitive chaos.
Vogue

TR: Even an offbeat show in Brooklyn is quite a feat to stage. Who did you work with to get this mounted?

MJF: I’ve been working with friends and producers, Bettina Barrow and Lydia Thew. Bettina has been a close friend since childhood and my writing partner for almost a decade. We have a book to film project coming soon that explores themes similar to those in Debutaunt. Lydia is a talented producer for CNBC and has a background in finance. The three of us have been raising funds since last July through our fiscal sponsors, The Field. Our venues, King’s County Distillery and Atelier Roquette, have been great to work with and helped us out, big time, by providing rehearsal space. I also got to workshop the idea and make many of the films at a dance on camera residency at Cucalorus Film Festival. We have also had performance and rehearsal support from SILO, Triskelion Arts, Lightbox, and Communities In Schools.

TR: You are directing and choreographing the show as well. Tell us about your work as a choreographer. Did you always dance?

I danced growing up and stopped in college when I was struggling with body image issues. Instead of pursuing dance, my first job out of college was an assistant gig in film. From there, I moved to Los Angeles and worked in production at studios like Paramount Vantage and Warner Bros. During that time, dance gradually made its way back into my life and I was eventually ready and able to make it a priority again. I began looking for choreography opportunities and taught at dance studios wherever they would let me. When I turned thirty, I took a major leap of faith, left my production job at Warner Bros., and started freelancing. I am now choreographing, directing, teaching, and blending dance and film whenever I can.

TR: How does dance function in the show? What type of dance is it?

MJF: Much of the movement was inspired by black and white cotillion photographs, contemporary dance, and Esther Williams-style synchronized swimming moves. Because the girls are wearing large white dresses, we rarely see their legs and a lot of emphasis is on the placement of the arms and the movement of the upper body and head. Structurally, dance serves as a transition between scenes in the show. It also functions as a means of expression and storytelling for our characters during their debutante ball and, ultimately, it unites the cast and audience at the end in a communal dance party.

TR: Since much of the show involves movement, how did you develop the characters and the script?

MJF: Some of the scenes were scripted in advance and some came from improvising in rehearsals. We have a really smart and curious cast who have been open to all kinds of improv, movement, and writing exercises. Regarding our characters, we have five personalities: the perfectionist princess, the competitive ice queen, the people pleaser, the rebel artist, and the fish out of water who does not want to participate. I’ve basically taken all of the traits that I think hold us back as humans and put them into these characters. For example, the perfectionist, Beatrice, is a control freak and is constantly telling everyone what to do and how to do it. Everything is measured and calculated and directed. Her movement style is precise and quick. Her bossiness is coming from a good place (“we need some order here!”) but she irritates the group and this keeps Beatrice separate from them. Eventually all of these wacky personalities have to learn to function harmoniously in order to stand up to the Mistress of Ceremonies, Martha McMillen.

Some of the performers have started Instagram accounts for their characters for fun. If you’d like to get to know them early check them out: @catherineelizabethjane, @cecefitx , and @melanieannewinslow.

TR: In the script, you described Martha McMillan as a “steel magnolia who leads with a contagious smile and an iron fist”. Tell me more about this character.

MJF: Much of the Martha character comes from the negative voices in my head (with some major polishing from producer/writer, Bettina Barrow). The negative voices say nothing is enough and that I always need to do more, try harder etc. The voice is insatiable, risk-averse, and narrow minded. Martha is tricky as she delivers some pretty cutting comments, but with a smile. She is hard on the debs because she wants to protect them from the harsh realities of the world. She has had a challenging life and is convinced that by being Mistress of Ceremonies at the deb ball, year after year, she is instilling some kind of hope and order. Martha pushes the girls a little too far in this run and eventually they revolt.

TR: You have spoken very highly of your cast. Is there anyone in particular you want to give a shout out to?

MJF: All of them! I’m listing the cast here so readers who are still with me will look up these talented people: Melanie Comeau, Elizabeth Dunn, Rachel Guest, Brittany Posas, Cara Seymour, Cecily McCullough, Beck Hartke, Catherine Cobb Ryan, Julian Devine, Teddy Tedholm, Taner Van Kuren, Michael Spencer Phillips, and Donna Fish. Read more about them here.

TR: Who are some other artists that inspire you?

MJF: Pina Bausch, specifically the way she blended dance and theater and how her dancers embody human emotion so vividly. Mary Oliver for her poems The Journey and The Summer Day. I am also inspired by Wes Anderson and Christopher Guest and filmmakers who create very specific worlds for their actors to explore. Lena Dunham for her book, Not That Kind Of Girl. I re-read the “condom in the tree” passage whenever I need a laugh and dose of honesty. Kurt Vonnegut for Who Am I This Time? and other shorts. Bruce Weber whose photos are just fun – smoking, naked on a beach – it doesn’t matter. He makes me feel like we are all free to do whatever and that it is okay to take a nap in the middle of the day.

I also have some talented friends and peers whose work really inspires me like photographers Victoria Will and Amanda Jasnowski. Filmmaker, James Ponsoldt. Screenwriter, Natalie Krinsky. Also, choreographers like Shannon Gillen, Celia Rowlson Hall, Chihiro Shimizu, and Dana Katz. Stellar humans and creators!

TR: How do you want to see Debutaunt grow?

MJF: I would love for Debutaunt to find a more permanent home in a convenient location so more folks can see it. Creatively, I am interested in continuing to deepen the script, the choreography, and I would love the time and budget to dig into the film projection piece of the show. We are also looking to enhance our team and hope to bring on a producer who has experience in live and immersive theater for the next run

One heck of a party.
Emily Post meets Lord of the Flies
.

DUJOUR

TR: Do you think there is a place in today’s world for the traditions and culture of the debutante?

MJF: I’m not really sure to be honest. I recently went to some debutante presentations in Texas to research and was expecting to think, “This is elitist and weird and white and why did I participate in this when I was twenty-one? And this tradition should become extinct!”… however, I was surprised to find that I didn’t actually feel that heated about it or observe anything particularly noteworthy or offensive while I was there. The parties are certainly extravagant and some of them take place at country clubs so can be viewed as pretentious; however, I noticed that the girls were all very grateful to be there and respectful. The fathers were proud and doting and it seemed like a sweet exchange between fathers and daughters in that particular community.

I actually left with an appreciation for the warmth and friendliness of Texans and I was reminded of how nice manners can be really attractive! I know it would be way more exciting to give you some dirt, but I didn’t leave with much, other than feeling I had just observed a somewhat bizarre ritual that ended in a dance party.

TR: What’s next for you after the show?

MJF: After we open, I’ll be directing video content for some online magazines, choreographing a film project, and teaching dance and dance for camera at studios and universities. For now I’m doing my best to stay focused on the show and getting people to come and see it. I hope you will join us!

Amy is a fan of metal music and Goth clothing and likes to think of herself as the ultimate non-conformist. His parents, Roger and Michelle Jacobs, are equally as typical, Michelle a researcher for a bio-tech company who always insists the kids take their ‘special’ vitamins that she designed. His father is a simple accountant. Other than occasionally not seeing himself in a mirror, Dusty thinks that all is well with his world. What Dusty doesn’t know, however, is that his family is being watched by a secret organization called the Monster Hunters Association, and that their upcoming move from urban New York to Texas isn’t because his mother is retiring. Watch What Happens When This Young Couple Sees What They Will Look Like In 70 Years

SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue

By Sue Campbell

If you haven’t yet seen the viral video showing a couple in their 20s get transformed by makeup artists to look age 50, 70 and 90, take five minutes to watch it (below). The video will make you think about sterotypes of aging and also about what it means to grow old with a partner.

It centers on Kristie and Tavis, who are to be married in a month. They’ve agreed to this experiement and are eager to share it with their families. “My mom thinks this is the coolest thing ever,” Kristie says. “She said, ‘What a treat for us because we’ll probably be gone when you’re that age, so we’ll get to see what you would maybe look like.”

The makeup artists get to work, and when the couple hits 50, Tavis is delighted by Kristie’s looks. They expect, they say, that they’ll be living a sterotypical kind of life, raising teenagers and joining the PTA. At 70, they turn a bit emotional. “I can’t help but think about what the potential last 50 years would hold,” Tavis says. “To see her look like this makes me think of where we have gone, what would have happened in between.”

To see a young couple ponder time’s passing, believe the years will keep them together and accept one another’s aging faces with love reveals the commitment they feel. It’s sweet and tender to watch.

At 90, they weep. The pair instinctively grasps that there’s deep comfort to be found in long relationships. They talk about what their last words to each other would be. “I would want to make sure he knew how much I love him and how important he’s been to me,” Kristie says. “I’m a better person because of you,” Tavis says.

‘Scandal’ Star Bellamy Young Was Initially Only Cast For A Short, Three-Episode Arc

First Lady Mellie Grant’s intense personality and sharp wit has been an integral part of endless plot twists on ABC’s “Scandal,” but the character was intended to have only a short stint on the show.

Actress Bellamy Young joined HuffPost Live on Friday and said that showrunner Shonda Rhimes originally planned to break off Mellie’s rocky relationship with President Fitzgerald Grant, which would have left the character with a mere three-episode storyline. She explained to host Alyona Minkovski:

It’s a story about Fitz and Olivia, so I think that it was ancillary in their minds, initially. I just had two lines in the pilot and then when we got picked up, Shonda went around the table and started telling everyone what their arc would be over the first seven episodes… She got to me and… she said, ‘So I want to write a presidential divorce and I think you’ll be here about three episodes.’ And I was dying inside, but I was trying to keep smiling because I didn’t want to disappoint her.

Luckily, Young’s character made an impression on the writers, who decided to keep her around.

“Somehow they just found Mellie’s currency as a lever, as a wedge, and they started writing for it. And it’s been the most amazing ride,” Young said.

Young at Art

Young at Art

Young at Art is a practical guide to playbuilding for teachers working with students at an upper primary and secondary level. Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball Celebrates Don Quixote Exhibit

The invitation read “Don quixotic black tie,” and whether that was a typo or an intentional blending of noun and adjective, the women who arrived at The Frick Collection’s Young Fellows Ball on Thursday were decked out in flamenco ruffles and matador-inspired outfits. The theme, “A Dance at the Spanish Court,” took inspiration from the museum’s special exhibition Coypel’s Don Quixote Tapestries: Illustrating a Spanish Novel in Eighteenth-Century France. Many were dressed by Lanvin, the evening’s sponsor, including chairmen Lydia Fenet Delaney, Elizabeth Kurpis, and Amory McAndrew. “I always love the Frick [gala], seeing what everyone’s wearing. People really dress for the theme, unlike many other parties,” Delaney said. “The setting lends itself to being really dramatically dressed,” McAndrew piped in. Adding to the drama—or the Instagram fodder at least—were customized fans emblazoned with “Lanvin [hearts] the Frick” in gold cursive. Guests playfully hid behind the accessory for photographers circling, and, later in the night, to add a little extra flair to their dance moves.

Young Women Pose In Their Mothers’ Wedding Dresses, Exploring The Mythic Power Of A Gown

There’s something strangely magical about wedding gowns, the white dresses infused with fantastical (if not slightly old fashioned or misguided) ideas about femininity, purity and love. Quite often, young women look up to their mothers as models of this romantic reverie, their dresses serving as matriarchal symbols, ghostly remnants of a crucial event they are intimately linked to though did not experience physically.

In her photography series “The Line,” French photographer Céline Bodin engages with the beautiful and somewhat strange mystique of the notable white dress, exploring the complex roles a clothing garment plays in the lives of both mother and daughter.

the line

“The images engage with our notion of purity, challenging our perception and the equation it immediately operates,” Bodin explained to The Huffington Post. “The apparent cleanness acts as camouflage and unsettles the apprehension of our customs’ determinatives. Echoing icons, the portraits quietly recall religious purity and aim to question what exactly defines such incarnation and where does its essence lie: is it within the dress, the person, the vision, or the idea?”

For the series, Bodin enlisted young women she already knew as her subjects, whether family friends or previous models. Their first task was convincing their mothers to let them wear the dresses for the shoot, an endeavor which in itself proved challenging for some. Just the difficulty involved in persuading the former brides to wear the sentimental attire speaks to its unusual, and almost mythic power.

ahnds

“The resulting portrait might be one of both mother and daughter,” Bodin continued. “With melancholy it highlights an absence that can only find reality in each girl’s imagination, fed by the detail of the lace, the small holes and stains left on the dress, the old wedding photographs they might have seen. Confronting time and generations, the models silently re-enact a past they can only fantasize, allowing themselves to embody the archetypal role.”

Bodin’s photos subtly address many assumptions latently associated with wedding dresses, like the outmoded understandings of purity that, though far less relevant in the younger generation than in their mothers’, still lives on in the lore of the wedding dress.

The images, captured intensely against a white backdrop, appear at first almost like advertisements, with the subjects staring boldly straight ahead. Yet upon closer investigation, small imperfections, both in the dress and the images themselves, begin to appear. The photographs expose the tears and holes in the dominant narrative of the perfect wedding, while still lingering on the beauty of the fantasy itself.

Young Designers Vie For LVMH Prize

GETTING THE MESSAGE OUT: Anton Belinskiy’s sweater said it all: “Poor But Cool.” He’s one of 26 young designers who displayed their wares at the headquarters of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton on Wednesday night, all vying for a cash prize of 300,000 euros, or $ 335,560 at current exchange, plus a year of coaching from the luxury group.
There was a mood of camaraderie among the designers, despite the walls separating their stands and all the jockeying for attention as members from the expert panel, who must whittle down the crop to eight finalists, toured the room along with top LVMH brass.
“It’s really exciting to see all these great talents here, and to see all the energy,” said Delphine Arnault, executive vice president of Louis Vuitton and the woman who conceived the prize as a powerful talent scout and advocate for young designers at the luxury giant her family controls. “It’s already great for them and I hope it’ll help their careers.”
The 45 experts have two days to inspect collections and meet designers before casting their vote. Finalists are to face a jury whose members include Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Nicolas Ghesquière, Raf Simons, Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci, Jonathan Anderson and

Meet Baton Rouge’s Young, Rapping Catholic Priest

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The youngest priest in the Diocese of Baton Rouge has a few confessions about his faith and his music: He didn’t like the Catholic Church as a youth, tried for years to run from his calling as a priest, and doesn’t want to be known only as the “Rapping Priest.”

The Rev. Joshua Johnson, serving at Christ the King Catholic Church at Louisiana State University, is 27, and in his first year as a priest.

“I was raised Catholic, but I just never liked the Catholic Church growing up. I thought it was boring, and I didn’t understand it,” said Johnson, a native of Baton Rouge whose rapping has brought him a measure of renown on YouTube and social media. He hosts the hip-hop show “Tell the World” on Catholic radio.

Johnson’s biggest difficulty with the church was with the Eucharist: “I never believed that it was the body and blood of Jesus Christ that the Catholic Church teaches.”

That changed one summer night before his senior year at Lee High School, during a retreat in Alexandria. He attended “Eucharistic Adoration,” when a piece of consecrated altar bread — the Holy Eucharist or host — is the focus of devotion and meditation.

“That night in adoration, when the bishop exposed Jesus Christ with the Eucharist, all I could say was it was God’s grace that overcame me,” Johnson said. “And looking at the Eucharistic prayer, I knew it was God, that it was Jesus Christ. It was as if I fell in love in an instant. I started crying. I was on my knees worshipping God.”

The long ache in his heart was lifted, he said.

“The first thing I heard him say was ‘I love you,’ and it pierced my heart then and it continues to pierce my heart today, because I was living in pretty serious sin, but he told me he loved me.”

Johnson said he was also told to become a priest. Instead, he said, he enrolled at Southern University.

“I didn’t want to be a priest, and I was trying to run away from it.”

But during his 1½ semesters at Southern, “I could not stop thinking about the priesthood.”

After a stint with the post office and endless days attending a 24-hour adoration chapel, Johnson enrolled in St. Joseph’s Seminary College in Covington in 2006, earning his master’s in theology from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans.

“Those were some of the best years of my life,” he said. “It was a time of deep intimacy with Jesus because you had a lot of time to pray and a lot of time to study.”

And a bit of time to hone his rapping skills, to the enjoyment of some fellow seminarians.

“I grew up rapping just for fun,” he said. At seminary, “I continued to do it for fun and people started hearing me, and the next thing you know I’m doing it at festivals and youth conferences.”

Rapping is one of the God-given gifts he uses outside of Mass to witness for Christ, Johnson said.

“I’ve had people come to me only after seeing my music on YouTube or Facebook and say, ‘I’m coming to you because I’ve seen this video and I want to give to my life to Christ now.'”

Some people have told him they don’t like it, “but I’m pretty sure all the apostles didn’t appreciate all the other apostles’ gifts,” he said. “I know I got to keep my eyes fixed on God and what God has called me to do.”

Johnson said he’s trying use to his gift to please God.

“Rap in and of itself is not evil; it’s not a sin. It’s part of the culture,” he said. “We can use that. We’re not called to reject the culture; we’re called to go into the culture and promote what’s good.”

Johnson said he can’t recall seeing a black priest during his childhood, so he never thought about growing up to become a priest. Now, he said, “I’m a visible witness to the fact that God calls black men to be priests, too.”

In May, Johnson will be a keynote speaker for a conference about race: The St. Martin De Porres Conference, May 8-9 at the Catholic Life Center in Baton Rouge. It’s named for the patron saint of interracial harmony, born in 16th-century Peru to a Spanish nobleman and former black slave.

“The idea is to bring whites and blacks together from the area to experience the healing power of Christ together,” Johnson said.

Johnson has worked with all kinds of people and cultures all over the world, from New Orleans and Houston to Mexico, Nicaragua and India.

He especially enjoys working with students at LSU, which has 14,000 Catholics.

“I love working with young adults because they have a real fire and a desire to be saints,” Johnson said. “I enjoy working with people on their way to encountering Jesus for the first time and those people who have already encountered him.”

Johnson said he relates well with the students and is honest with them.

“I can’t stand when people make it seem like all you have to do is accept Jesus Christ in your life and everything is going to be easier and holiness is going to a piece of cake,” Johnson said.

Everything important involves struggle, he said.

“Heaven meant a lot so Jesus Christ had to struggle; he had to suffer,” Johnson said. “So if it means a lot to us, we’re going to have to struggle, too. We’re going to fall down at times. God’s grace is going to be there to welcome us.”

The Young Wolf Chose (Paranormal Erotica)

The Young Wolf Chose (Paranormal Erotica)

Lena Remi is a member of an outcasted family in her wolf clan. However, that doesn’t stop her from stepping up to the challenge to become joined with two wolves from the most sought after family line in her clan. The wolf clan tradition is for one wolf to join with another wolf. Lena, Jake, and Randy decide to accept a challenge for two male wolves to join with a female wolf. The point of the challenge is for the baby to choose who will remain joined together. However, Jake and Randy have a plan of their own to keep Lena. The problem is that she doesn’t even know what they have planned. Lena got up and walked around the cabin they decorated. The entire place was catered to her along with five small rooms with cribs for young wolves. Lena couldn’t believe that she had gone from being outcast to sought after by the top wolves in the clan. She had been chosen to give birth to a new clan of children that would change and break away from the old way of life. This new status had made Lena Queen of her new clan. Her only regret was not being able to say goodbye to her father and the rest of the family. Lena walked through the rest of the cabin and it was immaculate. It just needed a woman’s touch to make it home. Lena walked back to the room and found towels, clothes in her size, and towels. She took everything into the bathroom to freshen up. Lena turned on the water and took off her clothes. After a few minutes, she jumped in the shower and cleaned herself up. Looking up at the shower head to wipe away all the dirt and stress she felt was really what she needed. Just as she was about to get out Jake got into the shower with her hot, sweaty, naked, and muscles bulging. He towered over her five foot five frame and leaned down to kiss her gently. He grunted into her mouth. “Mmmm you were worth the wait.

ReThink Interview: Jake Paltrow, Writer/Director of Young Ones

When I was a kid, it always frustrated me to read a movie critic’s best-of-the-year list to find it full of movies I’d never heard of, usually foreign films or small independent ones that weren’t advertised on TV and didn’t make it to the multiplexes in the suburbs where I lived. “Surely if these movies were that great, I would’ve at least heard of them,” I thought, assuming that critics were including these lesser-known films so people would think they were too cool for more mainstream fare, regardless of its quality.

As I got older, I realized that sometimes the best movies (and I’m not even including documentaries) simply don’t have the star power, mass appeal, or marketing muscle to break into the public’s consciousness. And with time, I grew to relish stumbling upon one of these hidden gems that could have been so easily missed. It makes you feel both lucky to have found it and grateful that filmmakers devote so much to making something so idiosyncratic and special that it actually reduces the film’s chances of a wider audience. Being surprised by an unknown movie you absolutely love is one of life’s great, simple, rare treats, with all the thrill of knowing a big secret but with the fun of having a guilt-free license to blab about it.

I guess I’m saying that now I understand those list-making lovers of obscure films, and to prove it, I’d like to express my affection for Young Ones, a film written and directed by Jake Paltrow that you almost certainly haven’t heard of but definitely shouldn’t miss. Set in a not-too-distant future where hearts, minds, and politics have been hardened by years of brutal drought, Young Ones goes way beyond the sci-fi Western categorization it’s been given to address timeless themes like family, economic struggle, regret, revenge, and adulthood. Watch my review of Young Ones below.

I had the chance to meet Jake Paltrow, and we talked about the film and how frustrating it is to feel like critics are missing the point.

On why the film is entitled Young Ones and Paltrow’s thoughts on the resiliency of youth:

Jake Paltrow: It feels like, and now as a father, I see that kids are sort of built to survive. I remember Roman Polanski talking a bit about, as a boy in the ghetto, how the kids didn’t know anything else, so they just created a life from what was available. There’s a naturally heroic thing in that even when you don’t intend it, and especially if it’s not something you’re choosing. So I was sort of reflecting on his point of view about his own youth, and I think that idea really drove the S.E. Hinton books, which were the first things that got me really excited about writing a movie like this when I reread “Rumble Fish” and “The Outsiders”. And the way she treated kids, told their stories, and the way the kids could sort of survive in those stories felt like something we hadn’t seen in a while.

On how the production came up with the design of the “dooley” rifle/shotgun:

JP: That’s one of those things that feels like a practical evolution of home defense down the road a bit, a long-range and short-range gun built into one thing. But I just liked it as a way to develop these small things within the film that let you know that it’s not contemporary, it’s not the way things are in life now, they’re a little bit different. I just thought it would have an emotional quality where you’d never have to point at it or say anything about it but the audience would just look at it, know what it is, and maybe think it’s cool.

2014-11-02-600pxYoungonesernest3.jpg
The dooley rifle/shotgun.

On why Paltrow cast Nicholas Hoult (who plays Flem Lever, one of the film’s three main characters):

JP: I loved him in Tom Ford’s movie A Single Man, and you meet him in that and you’re not sure who the kid is, and even as the film unfolds you’re wondering, “Is he a hustler? Or is he an angel?” And Nick has such a natural warmth that I had a hunch he could be this enigmatic force in the movie, but at the same time make the character of Flem much more complex, and that’s exactly what happened. He elevated that character quite a bit in terms of complexity from the way it was written in the screenplay.

On why critics who call Young Ones “dystopian post-apocalyptic sci-fi” are missing the point:

JP: To me the world isn’t apocalyptic at all, especially in what that means to people now where there are so many of these movies where the post-apocalyptic thing always seems to take on a supernatural quality, like a nuclear holocaust or an unnamed event, where something has happened and we’re not going to talk about it but here’s the world because of it. I think for this movie what we’re really dealing with is an extrapolation of an environmental and political landscape we’re living through right now in California, and this sort of ratchets it up to an extreme, but not an extreme that’s sitting on something fictional.

Jonathan Kim: It’s not even extreme!

JP: Of course! The water agreements between all these western states are really complicated and really weird and they’ve been changed through the years starting in the 1920s, and there’s a potential conflict in place. I think in the 1930s the governor of Arizona sent the National Guard troops he had in his state to this dam that was being built out of fear that too much water was being siphoned off and sent in the wrong direction. There’s a history of this almost armed conflict over water issues, especially between Arizona and California. And in the late 60s Arizona made a concession to Phoenix and Tucson that, in case of a catastrophe, they would put themselves last on the list for water, and we’re almost there. We’re at this point now where, in this agreement, those cities would lose 50% of their water before California would lose a drop. And the fictional aspect of the film is that if you end up with some ambitious, despotic governor who says he wants to shore up the water reserves and no more water is coming to California, our movie shows the reaction by the federal government which is to treat that offending state like Zimbabwe and sort of freeze it out completely, and these are the people left behind. So this isn’t happening everywhere, this is happening in sort of a fictional version of Colorado meets Arizona, mixing the political landscape and topography, but these are all things that aren’t so off base.

Young Poet Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner Explains The Essence Of Climate Change At UN Summit

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations,” John F. Kennedy proclaimed in 1964. “When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.”

Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, a 26-year-old poet from the Marshall Islands, recently demonstrated the impact a poem can have. She spoke during the opening segment of the 2014 United Nations Climate Summit this week. In a piece titled “Dear Matafele Peinem,” she managed to capture the stark reality of climate change in just over three minutes.

The entire poem, and the speech that preceded it, can be heard in the video below.

“To tackle (climate change), we need a radical change of course,” Jetnil-Kijiner explains. “This isn’t easy, I know. It means ending carbon pollution within my lifetime. It means supporting those of us most affected to prepare for unavoidable climate impacts. And it means taking responsibility for irreversible loss and damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions.”

“I ask world leaders to take us all along on your ride,” she added. “We won’t slow you down. We’ll help you win the most important race of all. The race to save humanity.”

Jetnil-Kijiner is a spoken word artist and co-founder of an environmental NGO in the Marshall Islands called Jo-JiKuM. The organization focuses on empowering youth by educating them on the importance of environmentalism and mobilizing them to work toward solutions to climate change issues. She was one of 38 civil society representatives chosen to present at the Summit.

An excerpt from her poem:

hands reaching out, fists raising up, banners unfurling, megaphones booming

and we are canoes blocking coal ships

we are the radiance of solar villages

we are the rich clean soil of the farmer’s past

we are petitions blooming from teenage fingertips

we are families biking, recycling, reusing, engineers dreaming, designing, building, artists painting, dancing, writing

we are spreading the word

and there are thousands out on the street, marching with signs, hand in hand

chanting for change NOW

This 6-Year-Old Donated Her Hair In Hopes Of Helping Young Cancer Patients Feel Like Royalty

While some girls dream of looking like a princess, this girl dreamed of making that wish come true for young cancer patients.

Charlie Tillotson, 6, of Sidmouth, England, had never gotten a haircut, and was passionate about protecting her long, golden locks, according to the Daily Star.

She has always wanted to grow it as long as Rapunzel,” her father said.

However, after watching a T.V. show about kids battling cancer, Charlie was inspired to chop off her locks for Little Princess Trust, an organization that donates wigs to young cancer patients. She also decided to raise money for Children With Cancer U.K. — a charity that aims to help children and teenagers fight cancer — through a fundraising page that her father helped her set up.

Charlie’s father, Steve Tillotson, said he was moved by his daughter’s request.

“She came up to me … and said, ‘Daddy, would you mind if I had all my hair cut off for children with cancer?'” Tillotson told the Sidmouth Herald. “I welled up.

Her haircut took 2 feet off her total length of hair, and will be made into a wig for a child with cancer, according to Metro. While the cut took place two weeks ago, Charlie has already said she wants to do it all over again once her hair has grown back, and bring a smile to another child’s face, the Daily Star reported.

Her fundraiser was also successful. Tillotson said he and his daughter originally set a goal of raising 600 British pounds (about $ 1,010) through their Just Giving page. The fundraiser more than doubled their goal, bringing in more than 1300 pounds (about $ 2,200).

Charlie’s good deeds did not go unnoticed. The town of Sidmouth is rewarding her by giving her a true princess treatment. Charlie will get her own float at the Sidmouth carnival, as well as a ball gown and tiara, according to the Sidmouth Herald.

Fallon donned his Young getup once again to perform with music legends Crosby, Stills & Nash, “reuniting” CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young).

The folk rock supergroup played an acoustic version of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and even broke into a little “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.”

And first things first, it was the realest.

Check it out above.

Daytime Emmy Awards Honor Steve Harvey, Ellen DeGeneres And ‘The Young And The Restless’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Harvey and the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” were among the 41st annual Daytime Emmy winners.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” received its eighth trophy as outstanding entertainment talk show at the awards ceremony Sunday in Beverly Hills. The “Steve Harvey” show was honored as outstanding informative talk show, while Harvey won as best game show host for “Family Feud.”

CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” captured six awards, including honors for best drama series and best lead actor for star Billy Miller. Eileen Davidson of NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” was named best drama series actress.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” won the best morning program Emmy.

The Daytime Emmys introduced new awards for Spanish-language shows. Trophies went to Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Dia” as best morning program, to CNNE’s “Clix” as best entertainment show and to Rodner Figueroa of Univision’s “El Gordo y la Flaca” as best daytime talent in Spanish.

CBS, which received eight creative arts Daytime Emmys for technical achievements at a ceremony last week, emerged as the network leader with a total of 14 awards after Sunday’s ceremony.

PBS received a combined 13 awards, with six for HUB Network; five for TOLN.com; four for ABC and three for NBC.

The ceremony, which aired on the cable news channel HLN last year and in 2012 after losing its longtime home on the broadcast networks, this year settled for streaming the proceedings online. The change in fortune reflects the dwindling daytime audience and programming shifts.

Kathy Griffin hosted Sunday’s ceremony, with Billy Bush and Mario Lopez among the presenters.

Other winners were:

Talk show host (tie): Mehmet Oz, “Dr. Oz Show,” Katie Couric, “Katie.”

Entertainment news program (tie): “Entertainment Tonight,” ”Extra.”

INTERVIEW: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, and Michael Lomenda on Jersey Boys

For his new film Jersey Boys, legendary director Clint Eastwood translates the blockbuster jukebox musical about the rise and fall (and rise) of singer Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons from the stage (where it’s been a global phenomenon since its debut in 2006) to the big screen. When it came time to fill out the cast of his celluloid songsters, Eastwood didn’t wander too far from the project’s stage roots, selecting veteran players from the many lives of Jersey Boys for three of the leads: Tony-winning John Lloyd Young, who originated the role on Broadway, as Valli, and actors Erich Bergen and Michael Lomenda as singer/writer Bob Gaudio and bassist Nick Massi, respectively. (Boardwalk Empire‘s Vincent Piazza plays group founder Tommy DeVito).

I had the chance to talk with Young, Bergen, and Lomenda during their swing through the San Francisco Bay Area promoting the film, and one thing that became amply clear with all of them was how surreal it was to be in the middle of a whirlwind that’s seen them rocket from relative obscurity to headlining a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. In addition to reminiscing about previous visits to the city, I talked to them about the play’s long journey from conception to completion, what it was like to perform a play when you know Clint Eastwood is in the audience watching, and the experience of making the movie after doing it for so long on stage. Read on for the transcript of our conversation:

So, how are you guys doing? How is the tour going?

Erich Bergen: Good. This is it, this is the last stop, today.

I was thinking as I was parking, you guys are living what your characters were living in the film.

Bergen: Better hotel accommodations.

John Lloyd Young: Except, Warner Bros. is paying for our rooms. We’re not paying off a million dollars of debt to the mob.

Bergin: Yes, and we are sort of going out and telling this story now, and living that a little bit. And Michael and I were actually on tour with Jersey Boys, the stage version. I opened the tour here and he closed the tour here in San Fran. So, we’ve all lived versions of the art that we’re imitating in various ways.

So, you guys all did the stage tour. You did not do it at the same time.

Michael Lomenda: No. We knew of each other. My first introduction to Jersey Boys was seeing John Lloyd on the Tonys, winning his Tony Award, and seeing their performance on the Tonys.

Young: I never did the tour. I did the Broadway version.

And the last time you did it was five years ago, I believe?

Young: I did the first two years, and then after several years away, I was asked back to do it, and so I did for a few months at the end of 2012, beginning of 2013, and that’s when Clint came and saw it. And I just did it again in London after we wrapped the movie. They asked me to do six weeks in London.

When you were doing it the first time, did it even enter onto your radar that you would be starring in the film version?

Young: I say yes, not out of any sort of retroactive presumptuousness or arrogance or anything. I say yes only because when the show was becoming a big hit on Broadway, Hollywood started to really try to compete for the rights to it. So much to an extent that I was a neophyte actor making his Broadway debut, and I was at the opening of a Hollywood film in New York, and one of the major studio heads came up to me at a party and cornered me and said, “You have to convince [one of our writers] Marshall Brickman to give us the film rights.” So, yes, right in the beginning, I thought, “Wow, they are all over this movie, and this cast, we could end up in it.” But, that didn’t happen.

It grew into this international hit over several years. No one really got the movie that early on. Something happened, I think probably Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, who are now executive producers, were holding out for some more involvement or something. So, it was several years later that, finally, in 2010, that Graham King, who was our originating producer, won the rights in a bidding war, and then it started to ramp up to the point that, by the time I was back on Broadway and Clint was attached, he was able to see me. So, Michael, who was on tour, and Eric Bergen just has a reputation for being the best Bob Gaudio – according to the real Bob Gaudio. So, when Clint was casting, Clint told me this on set that he asked Bob Gaudio, “Who is the most like you?” and Bob said, “Erich Bergen.”

Wow, that’s high praise.

Bergen: Yeah, it is. It’s also one of those things where, I mean, thank God he said that, because I wasn’t seen by Clint and the producers. I was no longer in the show, and if you ask any actor, “Did you ever think…blah blah blah,” and they can sit back and say, “Well, you know, I always felt…” But, I think, as actors, we all go through that back-and-forth of yes and no every day, right? We sit there and we go after a job that we want.

When they started auditioning for this movie, I said to my agents, “How do we just make sure that I’m really seen, and how do we campaign for this, and how do we do it?” But, if I hadn’t got the job, if it had gone to someone else, they’d be saying the same thing, and I would be sitting back, going, “Well, I’m very happy with my next thing.” So, you sort of make light of whatever happens to you.

Young: But, aren’t you glad we don’t have to see someone else play these roles that we love so much? Someone else do them? I’m so relieved.

Bergen: Correct. By the way, I saw great actors play my role who would have been wonderful. I was picked to do it, but I don’t know. I just know that, yes, I wanted it, yes, I thought I really have a shot at this, yes, I think I was the best person for the role, but did I ever think it would actually happen? Like, really actually happen? I don’t know. I don’t know. I want to say, “Yeah, I always felt.” But, I don’t know.

Young: Even having won a Tony Award for the original production, and being on the cast album of the original production, presuming that you would get the role, period, feels almost just like you’ll jinx yourself. I even thought, “Who am I to decide who the studio is going to choose?” I just hoped that whoever they choose is not really bad, so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life looking at this legacy that I started with an original cast, and say, “God, if only they had let me play it, I could have shown them this or this or this, and instead, they made a mistake.” So, I’m happy that I don’t have to know what that feels like.

Bergen: Not to be in the position of Carol Channing when they remade Hello, Dolly! into a film with Barbra Streisand…

Young: Or how about the most famous one ever, Julie Andrews with My Fair Lady.

Bergen: Right. And you know what Carol says about Hello Dolly! “What do you think about the movie of Hello, Dolly!” and she goes “Is there a movie? I didn’t know there was a movie.” So, I’m glad we don’t have to…

You don’t have to get that line out there.

Bergen: No, not so much.

Young: She ended up doing fine for herself, because she got an Oscar nomination for Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Julie Andrews then won an Oscar for Sound of Music. It ended alright for them.

Bergen: And there are people who didn’t get these parts that go to the next thing. It’s one of those things where, at the end of the day, it is a job, and it’s a career-making job, and we love it, but we’re all ready to do whatever comes next.

Young: You know what’s even more rare? An actor of the thousands, the tens of thousands of actors who are professional actors who hold union cards, so they’re professional actors. Of the tens of thousands of actors that are out there, there are only a few dozen of us who get to say that we played lead roles for Clint Eastwood and it doesn’t even really matter that it was Jersey Boys. That’s its own thing.

That was actually my next question, and it really is for all three of you, but John and Michael, you knew Clint Eastwood was in the audience, watching you. What was the immediate emotion that you feel at that moment?

Lomenda: I refused to believe that that was actually happening. It wasn’t until I saw a picture that one of our swing sent that he had taken in the lobby with Mr. Eastwood, that I sort of had to realize it was true. Frankly, the movie was really off my radar. I thought it had already been cast. I thought that he was just there brushing up before he started shooting, and so I met him backstage, obviously, thrilled to meet a legendary icon.

But, I shook hands and I didn’t expect to get a call a couple of weeks later to audition. I’m Canadian, with limited-to-no film or TV experience, and so honestly, this is literally just the most crazy thing that’s ever happened to me in my entire life. And then, to then get that call saying that I was going to be working with Mr. Eastwood, it was just mindblowing in every way. And, to be honest with you, ever since that call, every single experience with this whole movie has been that way for me. It’s just far beyond anything I could have fathomed. So, I’m just grateful for it all.

Young: When Clint got attached, well, through the years, after originating the Broadway production and winning the awards and watching it, over the years, become a hit all across the English-speaking world, hearing of the movie here and there over the years, my emotions would go up and down, because no matter what, first of all, it’s a privilege for any actor to become well-associated with a role, or to be starring in a hit show or whatever. When, before, you were just a struggling actor like everybody else, right? Suddenly, you’re well-known.

Then, you start to realize you have a legacy in something and it starts to grow all over the world, and it’s a strange feeling to see it come together and change in ways, and then to know that you have no control over what happens with the movie and yet, in my case, I wanted to make my legacy permanent somehow and do the role, if I could, but I had to spend a lot of years as the movie was coming up, and then it was going down. It was, “Are people going to make it?” Then, it wasn’t going to be made.

After awhile, I became used to the idea that I have no control, and I know that it’s gonna be awkward to have to see someone else come, to give the baton to someone else and watch them play this role for posterity. But, I came to a point where I accepted that possibility and I was very calm about it. It took awhile, but I got there. By the time that Clint was attached, I got to that point where I just felt the equanimity. So, when I found out Clint was in the audience, I knew, “Well, this is what’s going to either get me the part or not. I have no control over it.”

I know I’m good in this role on stage. I’ve seen audiences react to my performance on-stage, by that point, for about 1,200 times, and I’m just really joyful. I felt just joyful that this guy, who’s got dominion in Hollywood and clearly is a leader in his territory, was seeing me in the one thing in my life, so far, where I knew was in my territory, playing Frankie Valli on stage, on Broadway, and I felt, this is great. Whatever happens will happen, but how wonderful to show Clint Eastwood how at-home I am in this role, today, for this two-hour performance.

And, Erich, what’s your Clint Eastwood story?

Bergen: Who? (laughs) Every time you say it, it’s always like, “Why are you asking me? Oh right.” It’s still a lot to get used to. I think what I will always take from working with Clint was that he let us be us. I didn’t know what to think. I never thought I would be in a Clint Eastwood movie. I always loved Clint Eastwood films.

That’s not something most people think.

Bergen: No! I also wasn’t one of those actors, like, I remember when I was in college for acting, every guy wanted to be Marlon Brando and every guy wanted to do these gritty, masculine things. I was like, that is just not my speed. I just came from a different world. So, as much as I loved Clint Eastwood films, it wasn’t on my bucket list. So, I knew nothing. I truly knew nothing about going to work with him, other than his finished products.

Working with him, I was so thrilled to find out, first of all, how much fun he is, but what I will always take away is the confidence he instilled in me. Because, I walked on that set with the mindset of, “How do I please the director?” What he gave back to us was, “You don’t have to worry about pleasing me. We’re all making a movie here together.” And, the reason why he hired us, specifically the three of us but even including Vincent [Piazza], was what we did either in the audition room or what he saw us do on stage.

That’s why we got the job. So, for us to all of a sudden do something different now made no sense, and to instill in us the confidence to just continue doing what we had always done, that’s something that I never had any director give me before. I’m so used to being micromanaged.

Young: “You’re good enough. That’s the thing. You’re not only good enough, but you’re the best one, and I chose you.” Being chosen by Clint Eastwood, when he can have any actor he wants in the world in his films and he chose unknowns, ’cause he liked our performances, how can you not rise to the occasion?

Bergen: Yeah, that’s definitely what I will take away. I was talking to Mike Doyle, who plays Bob Crewe in this film, and Mike’s one of these guys that you might not know his name but he’s been in everything. He’s that guy from everything. One day, on set, we were sitting in the back of one of those golf carts on set, and I said to him, “Alright, what is your greatest experience, of all the things you’ve ever done? What was your best film or show or whatever?” and he said, “This.”

I said, “You can’t be serious. Really? After all of everything? This, what we’re doing right now, is your greatest?” And, he said, because I forget who of us, there were a couple of us in the car, and he said, “You guys don’t know what you’re doing. You have no clue how important this is. You have no clue how good this is. You are spoiled rotten with this, and it is all downhill from here.”

Hopefully not! (Laughs)

Bergen: (Laughs) No, he didn’t mean that literally, but in the sense that…

It’s a pretty good entrée into everything.

Bergen: If this guy, who has been in everything, is telling me that, just from his experience on this film, that this is the best, most fun experience he’s ever had, then I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to fully take in what we’ve done until maybe years from now.

Lloyd: I have friends from the South that have an expression that I think is very charming: “We fell into the honey pot.”
